It sucks, but sometimes unreasonable people just need to be avoided. Try to keep in mind your sister is a victim of years of systematic brainwashing. Third...I would confront your sister. Not on the topic of gay marriage, but on her attitude. Tell her that her forcing the issue is making you want to not be around her. If she keeps it up, get other relatives to talk to her.
@starjake It's really hard to talk about it, just because we're staying with her in NC and if I come out and say, for example, "Hey, your nonstop, unapolagetically radical views give me the willies, kthx", she just comes back with the whole "You're ungrateful, get out of my house and away from my children", like she expects my not-even-old-enough-to-drive-on-my-own self to hitchhike down to a Holiday Inn and use the credit card I totally have to hole up there without the rest of my close family.
@DreamerElusive Whose side are your parents on? Maybe they can talk to her for you.
If not...well, there aren't that many more years until you'll be on your own. In the meantime, try coming up with a phrase ("{sister's name}, we've talked about this before, and I just don't agree with your viewpoint. I'm not going to try to change your mind; all I ask is that you show me that same respect." or something), and every time she tries to bring up the subject, repeat that phrase until she goes away.

Coming from a Pentecostal, 'holy roller' family, I can see exactly what you are going through. Currently ALL members of my family do not talk to me, including my 'black sheep' of an older sister who was twice pregnant before marriage.. I don't smoke, can't drink due to an illness, curse like a sailor and express myself, so I got kicked out for my 'strong personality'. Translation: 3.85 GPAs dont get you through school in the south, family does. Pretend just long enough to get your diploma!
People who are scary religious are only like that because they believe that they need religion to have morals, ethnics. or common decency. the rest who sometimes go to church and don't really incorporate religion into their everyday life, are agnostic. the ones who have any doubt (even a small) in 'god', a lack of participation/believing (like myself) or straight up purposefully do not believe in god...are atheist. so most agnostics are pretty much atheists. do like philly d says and let it go.
I agree with Phil, mostly. When your sister tries to push the issue, just be a s quiet and non-committal as you can be. My brother and I get into lots of disputes like this, and sometimes it's he or I am so entrenched in our opinions that it's really better to just let sleeping dogs lie. So just do your best to tip-toe around that issue and do your best to change the subject. People with such strong opinions are usually best left to figure things out on their own. Hopefully one day she will. :)

id just ignore it, or be like me and my born again christian friend and just agree to disagree, and leave it at that. but if she starts bashing a gay friend then go and put your foot down. this seems to work out for me at least
so um yea, I think you gave your point very clear and honest, thank you for speaking up and speaking out! I live with a homophobe myself who says that gays are disgusting and she wishes they'd go away and my response is to invite my bi curious sister over to spend the night as often as possible... who by the way my roommate loves but doesn't know is bi... sigh.
Phil said it better, but I'll add my two cents. I grew up in a conservative home, and I used to be like your sister because that's all I knew. When I was 10, I found hip-hop music, and eventually I realized I was kind of being brainwashed. I'm 14 now, and I fully support gay rights. You're doing the right thing by avoiding it, but if she persists, wear some sort of "TOLERANCE" shirt and ignore her. It'll take effort to stay quiet, but she's not worth arguing with. Hope this helps! :)
@TheBee7943 How about u just leave everyone alone. If people do not want to listen to ur rambling on jesus and aren't open to believe in christianity altogether then just leave then alone. Stop trying to shove stuff down their throats. U keep aggravating a situation which is not making things any better. Its only making it worse. Leave it alone. Believe what u want to believe. Preach what u want to preach. But there's a line where u should stop preaching because u r hurting people.
If a religious person tries to force their beliefs on me..I simply tell them to fuck off. I am bisexual and an atheist so I pretty much catch shit from christians ALL THE TIME.
I think the best thing is to agree to disagree. Tell her she can believe what ever her religion entails but when she pushes what she believes in on you or gives opinions about how other should live her lives she is being disrespectful.
@LEYEGHTZ3RO Don't agree to disagree. That closes the discussion & closes minds. It must be kept open to people can start seeing the truth. Seeds of knowledge need to be planted.
@upabittoolate It's not a discussion if one of the parties has already made up their minds. Both people need to be open minded in order for ideas to be shared, and in this case Dreamer's sister already has her mind made up about things, so there isn't really any wiggle room.
@LEYEGHTZ3RO Open my mind to religious rigor? That's counter-intuitive. Both parties DON'T to be open-minded. Religious people need to join the 21st century. Here's the thing: religious nonsense isn't an idea. It's rehashed bullshit, from centuries of yore, that people are to afraid to dispense with.
@upabittoolate You're taking this way off track. I'm saying that DreamerElusive should agree to disagree with her sister because she doesn't sound like she is going to budge. Your attitude went first from "spreading seeds and ideas" to "religion is wrong, people should wake up" which is completely contradictory. Whether you believe in any sort of religion or not is irrelevant, what is relevant is you ability to tolerate the differences and find common ground, even if you don't agree.
@LEYEGHTZ3RO What I'm saying is that agreeing to disagree is merely a means of staying in the dark. You seem to think there's a dichotomy between spreading seeds of knowledge & waking up. There isn't. I'm not sure why you're not processing that. My level of tolerance isn't what's at issue. What's at issue is that people have been playing my-god-can-kick-your-god's-ass for far too long. Lives have been lost in that fight. It's time to get rid of Jesus, Iehovah, Muhammad & Krishna.
@upabittoolate Although I can agree that the timeless religious struggle that has plagued history and modern society, I think It's fair to say that religion isn't going anywhere any time soon.
@LEYEGHTZ3RO As long as you understand what I'm saying, that's fine by me. I know I'm pretty radical about my approach but it's no different than door-knocking Mormons. Somebody's gotta say what needs to be said. I'm sick of people avoiding conversations by agreeing to disagree.
"You may be the only connection to Jesus/God someone sees. Now are those people going to remember that as a good thing or bad thing." And if she refuses to accept that as your opinion and just let you have it then they aren't making Jesus/God out to be looking like a very kind/loving God.
Personally I would tell her that it is your opinion and that you don't necessarily believe in the same higher power she does and to respect your opinion by letting you have it. If you approach her calmly and respectfully then she should let it go. If that doesn't work then I would say I refuse to have this conversation with you *insert bible thumping sisters name here*
Personally I hate these types of Christians because it gives the rest of us a bad reputation. As my pastor says
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Well why cant christians have their opinion? If you look at the bible, the word of God is true, even if u look at it scientifically (not pseudoscience for example: evolution) REAL science goes hand in hand with the bible. you should look things up independently(:
@TheBee7943 I never said they couldn't, and I never argued with the rationale of the bible. This is me, knowing my sister's opinion is different and looking for a way not to proclaim either of our views right because I have no definitive grasp of moral rightness in any professional capacity, and neither do any of us, for that matter. The point of this query is trying to respect her beliefs while not caving with my own.
@TheBee7943 Are you stupid? Who gives a tuppenny fuck about a man-made book that's full of inconsistency, primitive narratives about morality, violence & poor logic? Read a real book.
@upabittoolate no im not stupid sir/miss whatever u are :P there is no inconsistencies in the bible lol its not primitive, why science in recent years is telling us what the bible said years ago, prophecy from the bible has also come true, coming true, and will come true, nd the bible is real x) u can touch it lol its a concrete and physical :P so its a real book :)
@TheBee7943 You claim you aren't stupid. I can't tell. You say it's not primitive? Show me where there's sophistication & refined ideas. Show me a "true prophecy". Read a real book.
@upabittoolate well before we even discovered bacteria the bible says when someone has leprosy(i believe thats what it was) that u are to not get near them and leave them alone till they get better only later we found out we r to do tht cuz of bacteria nd u shuld read daniels prophecy
before ppl thought the world was flat or carried by turtles or by a huge guy named atlas but the bible always said the earth is a sphere nd appears to b held up by nothing, now that isnt primitive((:
@TheBee7943 Moron. They knew what bacteria were they just hadn't named them yet. Also, the idea of quarantining animals isn't from the bible. It's been done for THOUSANDS of years. Ever heard of FARMS you imbecile?
Also, the Ancient Egyptians had already concluded that the Earth was not flat. You think that human history is equivalent to European history. No wonder you're stupid enough to drink Bible-flavored Kool Aid.
@upabittoolate the bible said that there r waterfalls under the sea wich is true science has concluded that agriculture was started within the maximim of the last 10,000 years
nd i didnt realize the egyptians went nd told the europeans tht knowledge, also dinosaur bones have been found with soft tissue nd blood cells were still in the bones pretty odd that million year old bones can retain this, nd also science says tht ppl from the past have the same amount of intelligence as us perhaps higher
@TheBee7943 Thanks. You just illustrated how agriculture predates the Bible. You get today's No-Shit-Sherlock Award. Also, if you don't think the Europeans got much of what they knew from the libraries of Carthage & Memphis, you haven't studied history. Perhaps THAT'S where you need to start looking for real books. Waterfalls under the sea? That kinda shit has ALWAYS been around. If I say there's gonna be an earthqauke in India, does that make me a prophet you fuckwit?
why not say "agree to disagree"? I usually just tell people "whether you or I am wrong doesn't really matter, because in the end we will see who's right. Me being agnostic, leaning towards religiousness", i tend to also say "if I'm right, then i will hopefully be in heaven, if i am wrong, hey I had a good life." Either way i win.
@DreamerElusive Tell her that the Bible has been edited since it's been around for so long. Point out the biblical contradictions to support this fact.
@TheBee7943 I dont believe anywhere anyone said Christian's couldn't have their opinion. And just looking at the bilbe doesn't make it true. Truth is based on observable fact. Your claim is that all statements in the bible are true. Even disregarding that a lot of things in the bible are in no way directly observable and that a lot of places and people in the bible are unaccounted for as actually having existed, there is no way to 100% authenticate each yot and tiddle in the bible as being 100%.
@TheBee7943 Additionally, the reason that Christians believe the bible is 100% true is based on a claim in the new restatement stating that the bible is 100% true. This is circular logic. I believe the bible is true because the bible tells me its true which makes me believe the bible is true. Now, I am a Christian. I went to Christian high school and Christian college and even seminary, but God gave us reason and rationale for a reason. To say that Science goes hand in hand with the bible is a
@TheBee7943 completely incidental. The same argument can be used to say that the movie Star Trek is 100% true because it goes hand in hand with science. The fact of the matter is that most Christians don't look at things empirically. You believe what the bible tells you because you believe in the bible. You believe what your pastors tell you because you believe in religion. But when it comes to homosexuals most Christians completely ignore the entirety of the bible. Firstly, they ignore that
@damneddirtyapez im a bible believing christian and i dont go to pastors nd not in religions only the bible nd i did unbias research, i was catholic but gave that up cuz i believed it was wrong and i seeked truth, well science and truth led me to christianity. nd no on the circular reason, even if the bible wasnt around we, with science and history, have come to the conclusions that it says in the bible(: thats y i believe it :P
@TheBee7943 they themselves are constantly sinners, in sin, and know that they sin. Yet, they condemn gays for being sinners, being in sin, and for knowingly continue to sin. Secondly, Jesus' best friends were prostitutes and thieves but we condemn gays, blame natural disasters and untold death on their gayness. And lastly but damned sure most important and what this girl was trying to convey, is that Christians do NOT show love towards gay people. So every Christian that has ever or will ever
@TheBee7943 spout hate or contempt for a gay person breaks Jesus most important commandment of loving thy neighbor as thyself. Christians conceptualize gays not as people, but as monsters and living testaments of sin. But they themselves break the laws of God on a daily basis. And I specifically am responding to you because you want to let "Christians have their opinion", however, you need to be aware @thebee7943 that when you think anything other than love for gay people that you are breaking
@TheBee7943 the greatest commandment he gave which is to love thy neighbor as you would love thyself. Gay people aren't gay people. Gay people are people. And Christianity forgets about that. They justify stripping the humanity from the image of gay people and you forget these people are people. And that you are commanded to love them. Well I am here to remind you of that commandment. We all sin but we are all commanded to love everyone equally, despite what others may teach, HE commanded this.
@damneddirtyapez i do love everyone i was hateful when i was catholic but have changed since i became christian i dont hate gay ppl, if anything catholics forget this
@damneddirtyapez Hey, I think you said that better than I ever could. I agree, a lot of Christians broken humans into "CHRISTIANS" and "HELLBOUND". The latter can be broken up into smaller categories such as "Gays", "Users of Swear Words", "Drug Addicts", "People Who Had Sex Before Marriage", or "Anyone Who Does Not Accept Our Beliefs". Such hypocrisy can be traced back to the Nazis.
I don't know if I believe in god, but I know that we're all human and we all deserve the same rights.
@TheBee7943 so how is evolution Pseudo science? just because it doesnt match the bible doesnt mean is not possible for that theory to be right, as only a moron would take all that the bible said as absolute truth and reject anything else that proves it wrong.
@DreamerElusive hey, you know, im christian, but you know, im completely with you on this subject. I mean i am the head of the teen service in my church, but people that are TOO radical should be delt with. If you want, I can post some bible verses to actually help you in any argument with your sis, of course with your permission. Trust me, if you use the bible against her, you got this in the bag...so to speak :P i mean, a christian cant go against the bible...right?
I don't know you but I think I might love you.

ProudAtheist90 9 months ago
I think the best thing is to agree to disagree. Tell her she can believe what ever her religion entails but when she pushes what she believes in on you or gives opinions about how other should live her lives she is being disrespectful.
LEYEGHTZ3RO 9 months ago
@LEYEGHTZ3RO Don't agree to disagree. That closes the discussion & closes minds. It must be kept open to people can start seeing the truth. Seeds of knowledge need to be planted.
upabittoolate 9 months ago
@upabittoolate It's not a discussion if one of the parties has already made up their minds. Both people need to be open minded in order for ideas to be shared, and in this case Dreamer's sister already has her mind made up about things, so there isn't really any wiggle room.
LEYEGHTZ3RO 9 months ago
@LEYEGHTZ3RO Open my mind to religious rigor? That's counter-intuitive. Both parties DON'T to be open-minded. Religious people need to join the 21st century. Here's the thing: religious nonsense isn't an idea. It's rehashed bullshit, from centuries of yore, that people are to afraid to dispense with.
It's time to get rid of religion altogether.
upabittoolate 9 months ago
@upabittoolate You're taking this way off track. I'm saying that DreamerElusive should agree to disagree with her sister because she doesn't sound like she is going to budge. Your attitude went first from "spreading seeds and ideas" to "religion is wrong, people should wake up" which is completely contradictory. Whether you believe in any sort of religion or not is irrelevant, what is relevant is you ability to tolerate the differences and find common ground, even if you don't agree.
LEYEGHTZ3RO 9 months ago
@LEYEGHTZ3RO What I'm saying is that agreeing to disagree is merely a means of staying in the dark. You seem to think there's a dichotomy between spreading seeds of knowledge & waking up. There isn't. I'm not sure why you're not processing that. My level of tolerance isn't what's at issue. What's at issue is that people have been playing my-god-can-kick-your-god's-ass for far too long. Lives have been lost in that fight. It's time to get rid of Jesus, Iehovah, Muhammad & Krishna.
upabittoolate 9 months ago
@upabittoolate Although I can agree that the timeless religious struggle that has plagued history and modern society, I think It's fair to say that religion isn't going anywhere any time soon.
LEYEGHTZ3RO 9 months ago
@LEYEGHTZ3RO As long as you understand what I'm saying, that's fine by me. I know I'm pretty radical about my approach but it's no different than door-knocking Mormons. Somebody's gotta say what needs to be said. I'm sick of people avoiding conversations by agreeing to disagree.

"You may be the only connection to Jesus/God someone sees. Now are those people going to remember that as a good thing or bad thing." And if she refuses to accept that as your opinion and just let you have it then they aren't making Jesus/God out to be looking like a very kind/loving God.
Aroo2011 9 months ago
Personally I would tell her that it is your opinion and that you don't necessarily believe in the same higher power she does and to respect your opinion by letting you have it. If you approach her calmly and respectfully then she should let it go. If that doesn't work then I would say I refuse to have this conversation with you *insert bible thumping sisters name here*
Personally I hate these types of Christians because it gives the rest of us a bad reputation. As my pastor says

Well why cant christians have their opinion? If you look at the bible, the word of God is true, even if u look at it scientifically (not pseudoscience for example: evolution) REAL science goes hand in hand with the bible. you should look things up independently(:
peace out haha
TheBee7943 9 months ago
@TheBee7943 I never said they couldn't, and I never argued with the rationale of the bible. This is me, knowing my sister's opinion is different and looking for a way not to proclaim either of our views right because I have no definitive grasp of moral rightness in any professional capacity, and neither do any of us, for that matter. The point of this query is trying to respect her beliefs while not caving with my own.

@DreamerElusive so u believe the bible and in God but choose to ignore what bible says?
can we message about this? :) but lets stay calm about things we dont need to get all angry like all the arguements i see on this topic haha :P

@TheBee7943 Are you stupid? Who gives a tuppenny fuck about a man-made book that's full of inconsistency, primitive narratives about morality, violence & poor logic? Read a real book.
upabittoolate 9 months ago 2
@upabittoolate no im not stupid sir/miss whatever u are :P there is no inconsistencies in the bible lol its not primitive, why science in recent years is telling us what the bible said years ago, prophecy from the bible has also come true, coming true, and will come true, nd the bible is real x) u can touch it lol its a concrete and physical :P so its a real book :)
God Bless(:

Read a real book.

TheBee7943 9 months ago
@TheBee7943 Thanks. You just illustrated how agriculture predates the Bible. You get today's No-Shit-Sherlock Award. Also, if you don't think the Europeans got much of what they knew from the libraries of Carthage & Memphis, you haven't studied history. Perhaps THAT'S where you need to start looking for real books. Waterfalls under the sea? That kinda shit has ALWAYS been around. If I say there's gonna be an earthqauke in India, does that make me a prophet you fuckwit?
upabittoolate 9 months ago
@TheBee7943 Your remark about the dinosaur bones is completely useless. Please read a real book.

@DreamerElusive
why not say "agree to disagree"? I usually just tell people "whether you or I am wrong doesn't really matter, because in the end we will see who's right. Me being agnostic, leaning towards religiousness", i tend to also say "if I'm right, then i will hopefully be in heaven, if i am wrong, hey I had a good life." Either way i win.

@TheBee7943 I dont believe anywhere anyone said Christian's couldn't have their opinion. And just looking at the bilbe doesn't make it true. Truth is based on observable fact. Your claim is that all statements in the bible are true. Even disregarding that a lot of things in the bible are in no way directly observable and that a lot of places and people in the bible are unaccounted for as actually having existed, there is no way to 100% authenticate each yot and tiddle in the bible as being 100%.
damneddirtyapez 9 months ago 2
@TheBee7943 Additionally, the reason that Christians believe the bible is 100% true is based on a claim in the new restatement stating that the bible is 100% true. This is circular logic. I believe the bible is true because the bible tells me its true which makes me believe the bible is true. Now, I am a Christian. I went to Christian high school and Christian college and even seminary, but God gave us reason and rationale for a reason. To say that Science goes hand in hand with the bible is a
damneddirtyapez 9 months ago
@TheBee7943 completely incidental. The same argument can be used to say that the movie Star Trek is 100% true because it goes hand in hand with science. The fact of the matter is that most Christians don't look at things empirically. You believe what the bible tells you because you believe in the bible. You believe what your pastors tell you because you believe in religion. But when it comes to homosexuals most Christians completely ignore the entirety of the bible. Firstly, they ignore that
damneddirtyapez 9 months ago

So every Christian that has ever or will ever
damneddirtyapez 9 months ago
@TheBee7943 spout hate or contempt for a gay person breaks Jesus most important commandment of loving thy neighbor as thyself. Christians conceptualize gays not as people, but as monsters and living testaments of sin. But they themselves break the laws of God on a daily basis. And I specifically am responding to you because you want to let "Christians have their opinion", however, you need to be aware @thebee7943 that when you think anything other than love for gay people that you are breaking
damneddirtyapez 9 months ago
@TheBee7943 the greatest commandment he gave which is to love thy neighbor as you would love thyself. Gay people aren't gay people. Gay people are people. And Christianity forgets about that. They justify stripping the humanity from the image of gay people and you forget these people are people. And that you are commanded to love them. Well I am here to remind you of that commandment. We all sin but we are all commanded to love everyone equally, despite what others may teach, HE commanded this.
damneddirtyapez 9 months ago
@damneddirtyapez i do love everyone i was hateful when i was catholic but have changed since i became christian i dont hate gay ppl, if anything catholics forget this
God Bless(:
TheBee7943 9 months ago
