This is pretty bad. Hate me, whatever...the harmonization is just bad. It's my opinion. One other posted that some of the Cetera songs are impossible for Scheff and this is one of those songs.
I do admit this is my favorite incarnation of the band but this particular version of this song is terrible. There are ones from this era that are better.
@paulwells26 Really bro? Dawayne Bailey is an AMAZING guitarist. And because he brought some balls and edge to the band, that doesn't make this solo stupid.
Yes, thanks to the "surprisingly good" vocals, they've "evolved" into an oldies band.
Waa waa waa, if only Jason would get the credit he's due. Dang - after 23 years with the band you'd think someone would have noticed his "surprisingly good" vocals by now! I just don't understand!
If Chicago had done anything notable since 17 they wouldn't have to do "his songs." Hmmm Let's see Cetera lives in a big house in Idaho enjoys hangin' out with his family doing a few concerts a year when he feels like it goin' to the studio when he feels like it livin' off the royalties Hmmm ... I've often wondered if he misses those 18 years he lived out of a suitcase. You know, I could be wrong, but I doubt it hmmm you know, he doesn't sound ANYTHING like an "idiot" to me
What were they supposed to do? News flash - Find someone who can carry a tune. LA is knee-deep in vocalists who can do better than Scheff. "Surprisingly good?" Compared to what? You may not be keeping up with current events, but record sales have not been "surprisingly good" since 16 & 17. I'm not bashing the band. The band is great. It's always great. It's the VOCALS that SUCK. Fortunately Champlin is gone. Now if only Scheff could find the door.
Whew - that's 4:26 of my life I'll never get back. It's no wonder they don't perform that one anymore. Awful performance and even worse recording. Bailey is better off doing whatever he's doing now.
I saw Chicago live last year and Jason was absolutely brilliant on vocals...blew me away! And I've been a fan of Chicago and Peter Cetera for years....
I just think Jason is better than people give him credit for...Sure he's no Peter vocally, but he's still a surprisingly good vocalist in his own right. By the way... If you're going to bash a band at least try to act like you know what you're talking about....
Cetera was the best, although I like Jason Scheff. They are still pretty good on tour these days. Wow, this video was pretty poorly audio and everything... we sure this is really Chicago?
What?..... Have you heard the guy destroy every tune he tries? He is a good bassist though, much more versatile than pc. He sounds good on the studio versions of 18/19 but thats all down to the monster production values and the fact that he's trying to sound like peter. When i sore him on Live at greek theatre though i was really disappointed.
Why do you feel the need to reply to my comment? I'm simply echoing the general IMO of Chicago fans, that scheff is shit!
I would love to stay the night,to look into each others eyes and talk.I miss talking to you,I miss smiling for you.Just to have you near me would be wonderfull.Fall asleep in your arms.
This is Jason at the beginning of his Chicago career. He is awesome now - he has trained himself to sing like Peter to the max- the band has always had people who were "easily duplicated", and he will be my favorite for a grammy if they ever put out a new album!
I always love it when I come across a band that I love, especially when it was recorded where I live. Chicago has been around since I was at least 9 yrs old, wow!!
I think the probelm with this is not the performance. The problem is that this is obviously a bootleg which has a very rough direct-from-the-board mix. If this same exact performace was available on multi-track and was mixed properly, I thnk it would sound fine.
That's actually true. I love Scheff, and if you hear him live, he does great. I think when the tapes are transferred to DVDs or computers, some of the audio gets screwed up.
To an extent, thats true. Im an engineer myself and I know that bands like like F Mac and Floyd insist on still using analog for, at least, the bass and drums, because the lower end stuff loses alot of its warmth when its done completely on anything thats digital. But the main problem w/ this particular recording is mainly that its just a really really rough mix (as rough as could be). but I think the performance is pretty good and the recording of the individual tracks sounds pretty clean too.
As Simon Cowell might say "that vocal presentation was like something you would hear coming out of the mouth of a very drunken sailor at a karaoke bar" (A karaoke bar that served 25 cent draft beer)
He does even better know with more experience as a performer. Here he had only been with the guys forr eight years and was a young guy. Now he has over twenty years of touring and he is really great live.
If Peter wouldn't have thought he was bigger than the band and went off on his own like an idiot...He's still be here to sing "his" songs. So what was the band supposed to do? Give up? Or Evolve?
What were they supposed to do? Easy - find someone who can carry tune. It can't be that hard, north Hollywood is knee-deep in musicians who can do better.
Sounds like a kareoke version of the original. Oh dear...never again will i watch this (but admit Scheff has improved and was impressed with A&R Live By Request for example)
Who the fuck is the guitar player who destroýes the whole fucking song with that piece of shit for a guitar solo????? Mike Landaus on the orginal version is sooooooooo much better!
Wow, this is horrible! No wonder the last time I saw them in 2005 that Keith Howland did the lead vocal. Great song, though. Dawayne Bailey kicks total ass with the guitar solo, as usual. Not only does Jason suck, but the backing vocals are crappy too. I'm trying to date this video using Jason's hair, Dawayne and Tris in the band and have come up with 1994.
Yeah this rendition sounds not as good as his one from 1992. Instrumentation is good but his vocals are not on par here. I think it's too high for him to sing so he has to struggle to hit the notes right. He hits them messily most of the time but really I love Scheff. He's a great musician and singer. Just cant be on par with some Cetera songs. I admire him for singing songs in original key though.
Well put but when he sings in original key, he still cracks a lot. At 2:15 and 2:33, those are two times he really cracks. He kinda sounds like Dave Matthews with more power and a higher range is singing this. I know it's hard to fill Cetera's shoes but I give him credit for trying..... This is a great classic 80's Chicago song though and Cetera did make this a hot song. No one can do it like him.
Poor Jason, its really hard to fill in Cetera's shoes and get criticized like hell.Theres nothing like the original and he must be feeling bad he couldnt get into that stuff. Its not his song anyway.I saw him singing You're The Inspiration and after the performance though the crowd applauded, you can clearly see him shaking his head off,it was a pretty awful performance of a classic and he knew it.
Getcha-I guess you're mellowing out. You didn't suggest Jason to play w/that "unloaded" gun. Or sniff that white powder that's "not" anthrax. Best yet, you didn't have him sign a new record deal...at Mr. (Phil) Spector's house.
Hmmm.....maybe the weight of Jason's, big, bushy ponytail was impeding his ability to "enunciate" into the microphone! (just kidding, Jason!) It doesn't help that the audio track, itself, is off...and maybe he couldn't hear himself properly, either.
Sí, como que la canción se arrastra, tal vez porque era el primer tour de Tris Imboden (acababan de despedir a Danny). Se estarían acoplando. Buena observación, Vic.
Jason did a better job at the '92 Pine Knob show. Maybe this was an off night for him.
