  • I dont like red bean paste!! No affense:) do you have to put the red bean pastein after their done my family puts flour tge fills it with custard!!! Creamy delightful CUSTARD!!!!!

  • it would be nice if you could at least pronounce mochi correctly.....

  • MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM YUMMY!!! They look absolutely delightful, and I can't wait to get my hands on the right ingredients to try this out!

  • you confused me, haha. You kept saying wheat flour throughout the video so I went and got some wheat flour. When I came back to the video I realised that she said wheat starch. I guess i just have to make it without. :)

  • i love this video. thanks to your family ( i think) for sharing this!

  • i dont know why ppl are so angry on this page- talking breasts and curses!!! this video is excellent way for ppl to learn something! does it matter where mochi started? that is similar to having two loggers argue over whos land grew trees first!. crazy! also- to the ppl who made this video thank you for doing it and for teaching me something I wanted to learn.

  • canto yeye!!!

mom made this the other day -- yumyum!

  • this is more of dango...

  • mrMcshane are you chinese? I AM YOUR RACIST REALLY RACIEST. Yep it was originated from china. now we use rice flour on the outside of the mochi. inside is a sweet filling like ice crream, red soy paste or just rice flour flavoured. Try some its yummy.

  • Why don't you just put the solution in microwave? I did that and it actually worked. Much faster and easier

  • "Start off with one and a quarter cups of shi.. water" LOL

  • mine turned out firm, maybe i'm thinking of something different but what i had from a friend was really soft and squishy, these were tough and chewie, although they were still tasty :)

  • I have to echo an earlier question: How long do you steam them? I had assumed 10 minutes because you had finished mixing and putting them together them in 20 minutes.

  • @PastorJimOliver she days say to steam them for 10 minutes.

  • @priceandpride u add water until the dough is like playdoh

  • How long do you steam it?

  • 1:32 THATS THE ASIAN WAY ;D !

  • @pinaywarrior what, cooking with your hands? that's hardly unique to asia...

  • ojii-san's voice is so awesome!

  • Enjoyed watching this, HAPPY NEW YEAR! !!!

  • how much water/.

  • Are you retarded?

  • You have to have a taste for mochi... cause to me its bad tasting, it has the texture of dough and the taste of soggy marshmallows the red bean paste helps it taste a little better but not enough. I ate 2&1/2 before i gave them to my dog and even she just smelled it and looked at me like WTF?!

  • Mochi(餅) is a Japanese

    in Chinese "年糕"

    in Vietnamese "bánh gạo"

    Japan is pounding.

China and Southeast Asia are kneaded.

    Both delicious^^

  • Awesome video, you just saved me $300.00 on a mochi machine.

  • Do you also know how to make ice cream mochis? because it would be impossible to steam it with the ice cream inside, right? :p

  • @x3jhoyceex3 You do this recipe, but instead you roll it out on a cornstarch covered non-stick surface and then use a circular cookie cutter(dipped in cornstarch) and freze or chill the cut out, when absolutely cooled, place a dallop of ice cream in center of cut6 outs then freaze to keep ice cream in texture.

    Thaw out slightly before eating.

  • Thank you for this video! I do not use microwaves and I'm so happy to find your recipe!

  • yummm

  • what was the ingredients ?

  • hmmm look delicious ..gotta try this one ^^

  • YUM!!!

  • cantonese 8D isnt that like.. chinese mochi? ._.

  • awesome thanks for sharing

  • I heard in cantonese, "it's not there, I make it myself" something like that XP

  • y can i understand u wen u talking a FOREGEIN LANGUAGE!

  • In Vietnamese the glutinous rice flour is called Bot Nep Tinh Khiet

  • this is Chinese. Mochi is Japanese. There's no wheat in Kochi and all ingredients should be high quality Japanese, not Chinese frozen and canned products.. In fact, mochi recipes from Chinese is like pizza recipes from Mexicans.

  • @MrMcshane70 As long as it tastes good, no one cares. It's like saying, McDonalds burgers are crap because they used ground beef patties instead of steak serloins or something. For all you know, some people might prefer this over actual japanese mochi. A lot of mochi aren't made with high quality Japanese products, some people prefer lower quality, for the huge savings. Instead of 6 mochi you can make like 20+ for the same cost.

  • @numbingly My point exactly. Cheap Chinese products over high quality Japanese substance. You just confirmed it.

  • @MrMcshane70

Well you apparently aren't listening. She was basically giving you some tips on how to keep the Mochi soft with the wheat starch. You don't have to put the starch if you don't want to. You should pay more attention before making foolish comments. -_-

  • @MrMcshane70 The Japanese got a lot of things from China, like ramen noodles, their kanji and their mochi. The Chinese call it nian gao. So "mochi" recipes from the Chinese are the original, authentic and undeniably genuine, unlike the copycat recipes you get in Japan.

  • @whatthedormousesaid are you serious? You're calling the Japanese copycats when china makes nothing but knockoffs. The Chinese haven't invented anything in 300 years. And their reputation around the world is in making the lowest quality and cheapest products. Copycats? Nobody would eat Chinese mochi

  • @MrMcshane70 Try reading some history books, particularly food history books, before you post responses like that because it only shows your ignorance of such topics.

  • @MrMcshane70 PS 60 years ago the label "Made in Japan" meant inexpensive, cheap quality products.

  • @MrMcshane70 where the crap do you think the idea of mochi originated? ramen? you are an ethnocentric fool.

  • @MrMcshane70

    History lesson:

Mochi originated from china, It just wasn't called mochi.

    China introduced tea to Japan.

The fucking written language is based of Chinese. Kanji, Hiragana and Katakana all resemble Chinese characters.

Also, do you not know anything about history, each culture has influence one another. Korea has kimbap because of Japans rule.

The word for BBQ in chinese and vietnamese sounds VERY similar. Do i say Vietnam is a copycat? No, it's just history and humans.

  • @Antikukafe you have some misunderstanding. japan benefit richly from Chinese culture, Kanji;Chinese culture is great invasion, but actually the ancient Chinese who devised Chinese character 漢字 was ruined, the ancient Chinese and currency ruled Chinese; Han people are different ethnics.represented as Mochi 餅 in china that is like 月餅 mooncake that made from wheat flour.

  • @Antikukafe sticky rice cake was from Vietnam or Thailand. you don't know east Asian culture, you are not valued to teach history lesson so bossy.

  • I want some mochi now!!!!!

  • monterey park!?

  • Did you know, mochi buns feel like breasts?

    I'm serious.

  • @Dr141414 I'm kind of feeling like a perv' for agreeing... :P

  • @Dr141414 ummm... thats nasty

  • @Dr141414 Yeah, powdery breasts that are super fucking squishy with no firmness at all.

Who's tits have you been feeling?

  • If anyone wants written instructions, I think this recipe's pretty similar to the video instructions shown: dreamingskies . wordpress . org

  • why does this video weird me out so much

  • "Wait did it finish?"

  • Mochi Monsters lol, first time i had mochi was at a sushi place :)

  • Is steaming the mochi balls still nesscary if you dont use the bean paste?

  • I have those little colorful bowls!!!! :D

  • I have that exact same plate you placed the mochi on.

  • @HayitsJayy HA. Same here! :D

  • @jenettexD Yay for same plates. :3

  • Lol WOOHOO FIREWORKS! I love this and I want to make this...

  • @dragonlovr first off, it's "they're", and second, there are more than a billion chinese people, and even more asian people. you cant generalize people like that. do all white people look the same? no.

  • Thanks for making this video. I made this today with my friend, and it was delicious. We didn't have any red bean filling, so we made our own coffee and maple fillings. :D

  • I have a Vita Mix too woop woop

  • THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU! :D

  • What was the stuff you all were rolling the mochi in at the end? Coconut?

thank you for the instructive video! I hope to be able to make these!

  • i was just clicking stuff and i got here'

  • Thanks for the response :-)

  • she's speaking cantonese!

  • Comment removed

  • i think so strummingnerd

  • Does anyone know if this mochi recipe would work for icecream mochi??

  • hide little secrets in it huh? *adds sleeping powerder*

  • umm, i dont have the thing that you put on top of the boiling water, is there anything else i can possibly put?

  • @TATI154 A plate that can handle the heat (I use thick glass, but I've also used clay and porcelain before)

  • i love mochi!

  • Anyone know how many calories 1 mochi ball has?????

  • @ladythreecats

It really depends on the filling and what size it is.

  • so if you wanna make mochi icecream how do you do it? steam the mochi first than wrap the ice cream?

  • I wonder what mochi with peanut butter in it would taste like :D

  • what else could you use beside red bean paste? like for strawberry mochi

  • @fossati34 You can use anything you want. Daifuku, stuffed mochi, has filling, but you can make mochi without filling. For strawberry-filled mochi, you could probably find a paste or icing, or at least a recipe for one, at a local confectioner's shop or pastry shop. For strawberry-flavored (unfilled) mochi, you can find strawberry flavoring at a gourmet cooking store or a grocery store with wide variation, like Wal-Mart. Your best bet would be the gourmet shop.

  • where can i find the recipe?

  • oh! i have the plate at 8:19! my mom loves them! i am going to try, but can you use brown sugar?

  • @kittycathappy no, if you do it will taste different because the main material of white and red sugar is different.

  • If i'm allergic to wheat, will another type of starch do? (Potato or Corn starch?)

  • @MagpieMaid i use potato starch instead

  • @MagpieMaid you can use corn starch

  • Question? isn't using regular rice, mushing it up, adding flour to it, putting a scoop of ice cream in it, and putting in the freezer as another good way to make mochi?

  • @Keenan035 Not really, regular rice does not give it a glutinous (sticky) texture. Which is why they use glutinous rice flour instead of just rice flour

  • you cook them for how long? 10 minutes?

  • No sugar?

  • @xxpurplepassion88xx it was the first thing they put in :b

  • yeah make sure not to use wheat flour! the girl says wheat flour a bunch of times by mistake but you really need wheat Starch which is way different!

  • rawr so sweet ^_^

lol now i'll go to the asian super markits to buy those things >:) and never buy the boxes of prefabricated mochis...... <: D

...oh well think it's better to buy the boxes lol

  • can you be my new Grandma 0 u 0

  • No need for wheat flour if you eat them all up right away, which is what happens at my house!

  • I've got a question..

As i can hear (^^) it is that you're chinese..

and as far as i can remember when i bought these in a chinese bakery, they were called "tong yuan" oder "tang yuan" (i'm not sure)

so, is that mochi or is it what i mentioned above?

i want to know, because i was wondering if you can cook instead of steam it?

because, traditionally, tang yuans are cooked in boiling water...

by the way.. i love this recipe, its so easy , thanks a lot for sharing ♥

  • cud we replace the wheat starch with sumthing else? like.. tapioca starch perhaps? :D

  • @alicechu009 the consistency might not be the same but i could be wrong

  • How many minutes do you have to steam them??

  • @ladythreecats 10 minutes she said

  • @AmeerahStewart thank you :)

  • I love thia ..and thnks for ur tutorrial :)

I'll try to do tht :D

  • Yay for cantonese, i understood for once T_T. Most speak Mandarin these days. haha.

  • :3 I make this all the time with my mom but we don't call it mochi D: but we do use brown sugar rocks inside.

  • I try it and it did not work at all

  • i tired this and the cakes is really tasty. the problem is i didn't use wheat starch so the cakes get harden awhile after. and maybe it's my first time my cakes don't look as nice and even all around. but it is really. i haven't give up yet, going to try again next month.

  • @xMZVKx it is really tasty* i mean. and the red bean paste in the can is kind of runny.

  • What if we can't steam? Like....We don't have a steamer? Can we just microwave it?

  • do you have to put bean paste in it or can you put anything? Like something sweet, maybe jelly or chocolate? I'm planning to make this for my Hetalian friends for Fourth of July and I don't know if they all like bean paste.

  • @AnimeAbominationPro I'm pretty sure any filling is good as long as it's agreeable with the subtle sweet/bitterish taste and marshmallow texture of mochi :D I've eaten mochi that has ice cream in it before- best thing ever! Everyone has a favorite flavor of ice cream! America would be impressed by mochi stuffed with 4th of July themed ice cream @__@ though I'm sure he'll be pumped enough already, hehe...

  • Let's steam the dog.

  • ohh yeahh chinese market!!!

  • hmmmm ima put chocolate in mine :p

  • looks really nice and tasty might try this weekend.

  • can corn starch be a good substitute for the mochi instead of wheat?

  • Awww she's so cute lol

  • Ha! Japanesse youtubers!

  • i make this like th esame process but i make this thing with black filling

  • "she made it herself~nahh you don't wanna do that" XD why not it may be better unless I can find red bean paste made already but they also just have the mochi frozen and daifuku~ Fresh is always better though~T^T

  • You guys look like such a cute family! =D

  • Traditionally, mochi was made naturally, from cooked sweet brown rice.

Including sugar, flour, etc..is a modern version and not nearly as good. Try pressure cooking sweet brown rice until soft like conji. Let cool and pound w/ mallet until grains are no longer visible. Cut and bake......roll in rice syrup.....mmmmm

  • 13 people hate mochi...

  • "wheat starch" sarebbe la frumina, ma nel caso non la trovaste si può usare la maizena o la fecola di patate. Comunque è reperibile in qualsiasi centro commerciale :)

  • does it have to be wheat starch

  • Shaking the measuring cup makes you end up with a tablespoon or more extra, as for thick.

  • can i substitute normal flour for wheat starch? Or corn flour? I can't find wheat starch ):

  • @pinkeyshort its in asian markets!

  • @TheMandyPhan Haha i live in Singapore... so there aren't any asian markets! ): But i managed to find it, thanks :D

  • @pinkeyshort WHEERE DID YOU FIND IT? i live in sg too ^^

  • @applelicious1314 Haha the NTUC at Nex has it! It's called Wheat Starch. From the baking aisle :D And glutinous flour is there too (:

  • @pinkeyshort THANKSS<33

  • @applelicious1314 welcome (; Haha if you make it can you tell me how it came out? :D I bought the stuff but I haven't had the time to make it ):

  • @pinkeyshort i try >.< ithink im gonna do it after my exams (:

  • @applelicious1314 Hehe me too! I'm gonna try it this June :D

  • @pinkeyshort yea cause its th AWESOME HOLIDDAAY!! OMGG I CANT WAIT <33

  • yeah for cantonese :D

  • that consistency is way too thick.

mochi is supposed to be watery before it is cooked and you shape it after it is cooked.

  • My Mouth is watering

  • @wombat9406 cool.

  • Okay. So I have a question.

Is Mochi supposed to be a dessert or what? I mean They listed a lot of things you can put inside Mochi and they all range greatly when it comes to taste.

So can it be more then a dessert or what?

  • @righteous0warrior mochi is versatile. It can be dessert or it can be part of a savory dish.

  • @righteous0warrior Depends on what you fill it with. If it's sweet and filled with sweet fillings, a dessert. If salty or otherwise, filled with meat or whatever, you can use it in soups, etc. =)

  • Niiiiice ! and you guys, the sista, the brother and the grandma were so funny !

thx for the recipe ! your instructions were very clear and easy to follow.

  • how long do you steam it for??

  • @nikki04bikki 10 minutes I believe she said that is why she set the timer on the microwave. [=

  • can i haz Mochi?

  • So...I cannot make mochi by just preparing sticky Japanise styled rice, and pound & grind it vigorously? I'm confused, I thought that was exactly how they make it in traditional mochitsuki-event...?

  • @iuygtbkt No one said you couldn't, this is just a faster way.

  • I tried your recipe, it didn't work, they turn out like rocks the next day!! Wasted my time and ingredients.

  • i dont have bean paste can i use peanut butter?

  • @shugokaix ..NO!!!, peanut butter will melt!!! Buy peanuts (without skin) with light salt, get them at supermarket or Walmart. Put them in blender, add some white sugar (not powder sugar), blend. Then you get the peanut-sugar dough , make sure its sticky enough, but not like peanut butter.
