  • Que bueno por favooor!!!

  • soul inspiration !!! you bro!!

  • Freestyle Fellowship does it so much better.

  • Let us never forget those we pass by on the streets...pass the light of LOVE! Excellent cinematography Mr. Rothstein. Much peace to the men featured in the video. Now that's real!! Magnificent lyrics Mr. James. Peace, C

  • Nice rip on Freddie Hubbard ... Start writing some original music...

  • @slybonesoul - whats wrong with payin dues to Freddy Man?! - it's just saying he respects! - It's Jazz and Hip Hop. - he does write original too.

  • i feel silly cuz i am hearing him for the first time..... the man has a voice... and he kind of reminds me of gil scott heron... ..

  • @andersonearl Jose James.....yes..very similar voice to GSH...I totally agree

  • @andersonearl yes....Jose James....very similar voice to GSH...I totally agree...

  • cant wait to see u tommrow

  • respect the pioneers... good cover peace!!!

  • Why are New York guys so cuteee!!?? am movingg..fuk dat

  • 0:18 the drummer has Aphex Twin shirt! :D

  • @PawelKosinsky good catch, represent

  • Adele ft. Busta Rhymes!!

    search for it

  • is good

  • sounds like pete philly & perquisite

  • ooh, mint...vocal tone is very similar to gil scott heron...which is a massive compliment btw.

  • Sweet. . .

  • I nearly listen to that stuff every day since i´ve heard it for the first time in summer 2008. It´s so damned cool...that song always reminds me on a special time in my life...

  • mega

  • Amazing!

  • rhodes kick ass

  • 0:17 aphex twin <3

  • And that's just how it goes down in jazz. Covers happen every day and for how long? since the beginning. Don't get me wrong I'm a Blowed head, Book of Human Language is my favorite hip-hop album of all time, but let Mikah decide if he's jazz or Hip-Hop. What do you think he would say? Fuck José James? NO (shaking head). Let mikah be jazz when he wants, let mikah be hip-hop. This song is the highest form of flattery and so is all the elitism on this page, but I'd say let the birds play in the sun

  • fuck you bitch this is MIKAH NINE'S song not this fake ass crooner's,

if it aint broke don't fix it---this song is more amazing in it's original state.

  • @shakymenudo - Calm down mate - jose is just re-making a classic, which is the highest form of flattery. No different to Freesteyle Fellowship borrowing those old dusty jazz loops. Both versions are nice. Peace.

  • @shakymenudo what's wrong with you. Get a gripe. When someone remakes a classic its a compliment. And don't send me a funky message. Your language sort of falls in line with hard rap. you listen to sweet music with that mouth. lol.

  • @ub3long2m3

I may be wrong but I think he probably listens with his ears not his mouth!

  • @shakymenudo your silly and before you say fuck me to me fuck you.

  • @ub3long2m3 I'm sorry this message was meant for badboyleroybrown. i really apologize for sending this to you.

  • @shakymenudo relax mate it's a fine version of it's own.

  • Thank you Jose I was feeling a little down about bills when I happened to run across this. The video put things into perspective. Thank you.

  • @michelleandjamonti i feel you Michelle...i received the same reaction, this is a great song.

  • Red clay!

  • tremendous

  • Nice Music...

  • 3:13 ...hew yeee

  • This is real life...this is what music is about!

  • So strong pictures... together with the music.

  • cholernie dobre :)

  • @Kefrayaaa racja

  • so cool, so real,so true like it !!

  • José is the most accomplished artist I happened to hear to over the two last years

  • This is soo real. Never sell your soul.

  • It sounds like they did they did this song with the utmost love and respect. FWI...I'm a straigt up MYKA 9 fan... FREESTYLE FELLOWSHIP 4-LIFE.

  • lov it

  • This is real music!

  • This is a good take on the original...i can dig it.

  • I love it

  • GARBAGE

the original is untouchable, there was no need for a remake

  • @ConiferTreez

shut up jose james has skill too, doesn't mean the original doesn't exist anymore, get over it.

  • HEAVENLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • this is absolutely amazing!

  • this is dope...

  • Music is surely medicine for the soul. much respect to this man for this video concept and giving these folks something to make them feel good. i love it. God Bless to all the "Park Bench People". Stay up.

  • Nice cover version. I prefer the original, but this guy gets his props. The moment a song is considered untouchable is the moment it dies and gets stored in the museum vault of music snob mentalities. This is a compliment to Myka 9 if anything else.

  • it`s very generous sing to homeless people ... melody recruited by the depth :) nice very nice

  • yeah jazz y hip hop, la clave para hacer musica con estilo. Paz

  • very nice ! です.

  • this wasnt freestyle fellowship it was MYKA 9 of freestyle fellowhsip....PROJECT BLOWED ALL DAY..we taken over this world day by day!!

  • yeah but it was on the freestyle fellowship album tho.

  • Comment removed

  • OMG! He's channeling Freddie Hubbard and Kurt Elling - Primo!

  • HAHAHAH what the fuck is this shit?????????

PLEASE the original takes a SHIT on this garbage.

Mikah 9 is a LEGEND, who the fuck is this fool??

  • @ConiferTreez

    wow... relax darling

if you don't like don't listen to it

it IS a very good song!

i also prefer the original by freestyle fellowship

still... no need for that! u.u"

  • ALMOST a red clay sample. That's dope, he just took the rhythm and re-noted it.

  • was supposed to see him this friday motherfuckers aint sent me the tickets im so pissed

  • @brucehath1

ITS FUNNY YOU MENTIONED BONE BECAUSE THE CAT THAT WROTE THIS SONG,(MIKAH 9) ALSO INOVATED THE STYLE THAT BONE CLAIMS THEY ORIGINATED. BASICLY BONE BITE THEIR STYLE FROM MIKAH9.

LISTEN TO "MARY" BY FREESTYLE FELLOWSHIP.

  • @Zordo11 Okay, you got that right!

  • @Zordo11 You may already know this, I had a convo with Phenix Orion back in like 2003, he said Bone was at Hollywood studios right next door to Freestyle Fellowship. It was also the same time Crusial Conflict was there who also ended up biting.

  • @kickzo WOW... I DIDNT KNOW THAT.

  • I love the original of this song by Freestyle but this cat's version is very noice.

  • something like new age Gill.S.H.

  • Can i delete my post? Of course i mean Johnny Hartman grrrrrrr. ;o)

  • This guy is great. I heard his album and saw him at North Sea Jazz. He is great and to me he is a mix his own style, Eddie Jefferson (check out his fabulous album Letter from Home) and some James Hartman. Keep it coming James.

  • A Brooklyn vocalist covering a 17 year old song by an underground west coast hip hop group-Freestyle Fellowship. Who saw that coming? RESPECT.

  • ♪♪♪ simply amazing!

  • Great tune, beautiful video.

  • Jose James is the goddamn definition of fucking SMOOTH

  • This is some real shit I see some bone thugs in this shit

I wonder if bone ever check these guys out

  • BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHA

google "mykah nyne" and "bone thugs" and "biting"

  • @brucehath1 bone thugs jacked the whole PROJECT BLOWED style when EASY brought them to the goodlife/Blowed..he originally was going to sign the fellowship but they didnt want any part of it

  • Smoothness

  • Comment removed

  • just too real! great song

  • that guy at the end looks like jamiriquoi

  • @SHOGUNX8 see what u mean but his name is jay kay or jason keeth i think. jamiroquai is his band

  • damn, at certain angles he kinda loox like myka

  • soul

  • i hope myka 9 is getting royalties of this

  • this is great! modern day gil scott heron

  • this is funny, i was about to write the same thing. really reminds me of a young gil scott heron

  • you´re totally right. he (his lyrics and the way he sings) reminds me of gil scott heron. just awesome!

  • this version is dope..both Jose and FF*freestyle Fellowship*..the rhodes gives it such a feel..Makes me joyful yet sad, cuz theres nothing cool bout being homeless...this is whats called "Ugly Beauty" word to Thelonius Monk.. I look very forward to hearing more from Jose James..Its time for a new Hip Hop Renaissance...its time to be heard...

  • love this song.. such a great voice! the rhodes groove is taken from Freddie Hubbard's Red Clay... original of Park Bench People made by Freestyle Fellowship... all great songs, but gotta say i fell in love with this version!!!

  • Another artist under the radar of the sheep who saturate themselves in generic hip & hop and R&B.

People need to stop sleeping, because I'm awake, and the day is brighter because of this cat.

  • cool

  • Amen to that!!

  • sickkkkkkk song. I LOVE this song, can't wait for the new album

  • I wait for you Jose, at Skopje jazz festival(MACEDONIA)

  • I see this man in the box of legends in the future, l;like Miles,Coltraine,Wess,Kevin and the many others

  • it's great hearing something that's not about fast cars and ice jewls.

this is great stuff, keep it up.

he's also featured on the new Basement Jaxx record.

  • Gil Scott Heron...So much!!!

  • Jose is King!!!

  • awesome voice n all

  • wack .. this does ZERO justice to the OG track .. please this is watered down gabbage karaoke. No soul, cadence, wack CD 101.9 muzak push ya shopping cart through the wal mart bullshit. Big up Mykah 9 / FF and the og park bench people joint which is genius.

Not to mention the vid is playing out those poor people in the soup kitchen w dude dancing around like that. Shame on you homey!

  • true

  • agreed.

  • I like the original FF version more, but this one is well done. Mashallah!

  • jmd u r so sick putting beats for freestyle fellowship damn i just wish ppl would realize true music instead of the hip hop they call know and days

  • yeah i definately heard Gil in this..as well as a touch of Lou Rawls

  • The new Gil Scott Heron.

  • Definitely man.

    I agree completely.

  • Mmmm just discovered this guy. Sounds like freddie hubbard vs. gil scott heron.

    top stuff

  • ....i know i don't hear sucka nigga-a tribe called quest beat in this song

    or

    red clay sample

  • yeah..my thoughts exactly lol

  • It is Red Clay ( By Freddy Hubbard ) with a new melody . I did this beat for Freestyle Fellowship Before A Tribe Called Quest sampled it. Kevin O'neal did the new melody. Mykah-9 wrote the lyrics.

Jose asked us to rerecord it.

He also did a version with a whole Orchestra .

Jose is a far better Singer then you can see here on this tune.

Please check out more of his music as-well as mine.

    Peace

    JMD

  • @jammmessenger peace to my brethren JMD and all of underground railroad..you cats were trend setters...and still are good brother

  • fantastic video

    lovely sound

  • ....yeah I'm feeling the same way..so glad I had discovered him...great song!! Never Boring!!

  • I am very glad I discovered this amazing singer.

    His cool.

  • i like freestyle fellowship's version better...this shit is wack! what a damn shame

  • Comment removed

  • Just listen to the original version. It's just my opinion so calm your ass down =)

  • such a great tune, listened to it some 150 times now..

  • It is always so; there is no such thing as a free lunch.

    .

Free Food but you have to be ginny pigged with this new tune.

    .

If it ain't that it is a prayer.

    .

    Oy vey Maria.

  • he is SOO finne.....oh my god....

  • well said diversity 27, mykah 9 is a pure genius!

  • Your right, kinda harsh. Sorry Jose. Had to make my point stick though.

  • If jose doffs his cap to his influences, more power to both, surely.

    But Kenny G! Ooof

I saw Jose last night in London and his band rock a mean Red Clay with the two horns they have! Props to them and to Jose, who showed a lot of class and far more grace than his bar-propping audience. Hopefully he'll get a better venue next time...

  • How can ANY of you even BEGIN to say this is better than the original by Michah/Myka?!! Sure this is a nice remake and very polished. But to say this is better than the original is like saying a Kenny G remake of a Coltrane classic is better! Micha's was raw and full of SOUL! Not to mention genre defining. It breaks my heart a little to think some people are missing out on the genius that is Myka Nyne. Look him up, study him, and listen to one of the greatest musical artists of our generation.

  • comparing this to kenny g is a little much, methinks...

  • He sounds like a jazzier version of Gil Scott Heron. I like!

  • Jose James is my new boyfriend

  • lol i wish i sounded like that

  • Much better...the original lacked musicality in my opinion

  • better than the original in my opinion

  • the base line is similar to freddie hubbard's red clay if you like jazz i suggest you check it out

  • YES YES THAT's WHo IT IS GIL SCOTT lol that's who he sounds like

  • LOL He sound SO black I love love it

  • Well he IS African American!

  • To breannanshenea and LuizPagan, just read that his ethnic background is half-Irish and half-Panamanian.

  • talented, talented cat. i respect what he's doing with Jazz.

  • I dig what José is doing. Nevertheless, if a tenor player creates a wonderful recording of a Coltrane transcription, that recording will never approach the brilliance of its source.

  • very cool, kinda like gil-scott,

nice to hear real music and rap put together

    like the old days.

    thanks

  • The Freestyle Fellowship version is great, but I think José's vocals are far more superior. Great video, straightforward, to the point.

  • Everyone should listen to Freestyle Fellowship's original... This was great, but Mikah 9's vocals are superior..

    Great song..

  • nothin but a survival thang, you know what i'm sayin?

  • Nice groove, and so true.

  • it's good but not the orgiinal is waaaay better.

  • I saw him at the jazz cafe in london. Jose is both Brilliant and talened!

  • good song, but it can't beat the original

  • the bassline of this is inspired by red clay by freddy hubbard

  • Comment removed

  • i loved it, it's real. jose james is a man of the people and has a brilliant way of expressing his words through music. keep it up man! :)

  • buck fiters

  • "buck fiters"

Yeah! Like the Freestyle Fellowship sampling REAL musicians?..Stealing THEIR hard work so they could rhyme over it? So WHO is biting?

  • you...starting sentences with prepositions and sh!t gettin all cyber hyphy with da capital letters. go eat boogers.

  • 最高.

  • Very very very nice!, very suprising becouse this is a cover from freestyle fellowship, nice video also,...

  • I don't like it. Going to a homeless shelter in your hipster streetwise clothes, making your little 'in the know' hand movements and showing weathered faces of poor people.

I don't see any compassion or 'music connecting all brothers and sisters'. Just two worlds clashing.

  • Comment removed

  • Hi, thanks for the reaction, I appreciate it.

Truth be said, I was not there, so you know better what it was like.

No offence, I still stand by my first reaction: I've been to the odd Brownswood party, I like the music. But I can't help but think there's a bit of a highbrow feel to the whole scene, where a singer can't just be a singer but needs to be called a 'vocalist'. And I'm pretty sure if you went there looking like some of the people in the shelter, you'd get some strange looks.

  • I thought you were walking a thin line with the video, and decided to speak my mind.

But I agree with you on this: Peace!

  • Comment removed

  • I don't like the video but..

.. I do love listening to Jose with my eyes closed.. it's so so damn good.

  • you dont't see it the connection... well I do.

  • NO ONE CAN DO THIS BETTER THAN MIKAH!

  • Man you did Freestyle Fellowship's song some remake justice! They should feel proud.

  • Very talented man

  • Very nice, suprised he isn't more well known. Solid pipes, and the groves that supports him is tight.

  • man! never heard of this cat before. definately feeling it.

  • he´s great. i´ve seen in the jazz festival of vitoria today and he has surprised me.he ´ll be very famous soon.
