I lived through the best era for music and I have to agree with the earlier post. The talent was much greater then than now. Today, it's more about fluff and gee whiz gizmos.
I just saw your comment to me from some months ago where you arrogantly ordered me to do research so that I would know, like you, that the Beatles' "I Don't Want to Spoil The Party" is a Larry Williams tune. I just want to know, what sort of an idiot are you, anyway? Larry wrote "Bad Boy" and "Dizzy Miss Lizzy," but the tune I cited was a Beatles original. And you castigate gate me because I don't know it's a cover? Well, it's not a cover. You, sir, are a complete joker. That's not a compliment
This song has always held me in thrall. i played it 40-50 times a day from 1966--1970. and beyond. i still have my original 45 that i bought in Woolworth's !!! i could never get enough of this song. there is something magical about it, and its genius singer, Johnny Rivers !!!
Even though a lot of his work was covers of others, I think he should he should be in the H of F, as well as other groups such as Paul Revere and the Raiders. The Hall of Fame certainly has some less known groups.
Johnny Ramistella (Rivers) paid his dues in the '60s, at the L.A. Whiskey A Go Go!.....a bunch of big hits..........and never looked back.......he's a hall of famer...even close to Bobby Darin, in my opinion.
@kenwood3865 Yeah, exactly, he's in Bobby's company as a razor precise performer....Anybody who writes a barn burner like "Secret Agent Man" should be automatic in the H of F..
Has to be one of the top 10 rock and roll songs of all time! He should be in the rock and roll hall of fame for just this song, alone. Instead...we have groups like the Ronettes...name just one of their songs!
yeah my name is earl rulez!!! I watch it all the time, in fact, im watching it right now!!! Its the one wer the Warden shreds his certificates to get time off prison...
If you were around at that time, remember there was so much great talent around through the 60's that even a great entertainer as JR was one of many others. The Beatles, Presley and all the Motown crowd, Smokey etc.. There's nothing today that touches that time period. God I'm glad I lived through the greatest time in music.
@jsummerlin47 You know you put your point across so well it shows a depth of love of the music that you have convinced me. Bravo, all the best to you and yours.
@jsummerlin47 Well, Johnny Rivers is still rocking awesome shows so at least there is somebody like that around today. Heck, Smokey's doing a show here in SF later this summer, my wife and I will be there. Those days are going, but not gone yet.
I like this song but this particular performance of it is really watered down. That is hardly surprising as this is David Letterman, after all, and he and everything associated with him is about as white-bread, mainstream, and as dull as you can get
Johnny Rivers deserves his due as a world class rock and roller of his time.....a hall of fame guitarist, whose brilliant interpretations made the top ten many times...and have given us timeless classics....pay attention to Johnny Rivers.....he has a solid body of work, and still plays today to big crowds..
It's Secret Agent Man. It's not that hard to accept that you're wrong, mate.
Secret Agent Man.
The "ge" and "sia" have entirely different phonetics. You can easily discern between them. Then there's the fact it was used for a show called "Secret Agent Man," which makes it pretty self-evident.
I think this song is a classic even though a quite a bit before my rockin days but I do remember the butchered remake also that DEVO did that was horrible.
to magichounddog, the song is Do What You Gotta Do. It was recorded by Al Wilson, Clarence Carter, The Four Tops and several others. Personally I like Al Wilson"s version best. Hope this helpful.
I am trying desperately to find a song that I do not know the singer or the name of it but it was around the same time as Johnny Rivers, and in the same genre. Can anyone help?
