Just look at Arnold Schwarzenegger... he does have an accent, but he did English movies and even became governor of California. Pronuncing good enough to be understood is a honoroable goal, along with the rest; but yeah, trying to sound 100% native at any price might be a very overrated time- and money-consuming goal.
i always do enjoy your videos man and to be honest I agree with what you say. While I was recovering from surgery...I was studying languages in order to keep the depression off of my mind. While I studied the language I was mainly focusing on the phrases and how to say them. Later on that is when I went out of my way to listen to the accent of the culture in order for it to sound smooth. Those are my thoughts on the matter. Great stuff as always!
I learn my english when i listen to you and your vidéo. I know how it is difficult to understand a foreing language. I have been working in spain and for me understanding the key phrases in conversations helped me a lot.
i always start on grammar. Knowing the closed word classes and grammatical reaches is the basis of my language learning. And I always try to sound native...then hope to be better than the natives and explain why their use of language is crap.
I don't understand why you separate formation of an accent with language learning. I suppose if you're learning a language, you'll listen to native speakers a lot, yes? If you're learning 'naturally' like you say. So wouldn't you just form your accent in the learning process? Why do you consider it a separate thing that would take extra time and effort to learn? Why is this something you would have to do 'bootcamp' for?
when you're able to speak the language fluently, you speak it with an accent (foreign accent, or what be it). At that point it seems like it would be harder to shift accents, and that that would take more conscious effort. A shift in accent constitutes, among other things, a shift in pronunciation after all.
I think what he means by not worrying about accents is to not be disencouraged when someone tells you "your accent isn't very good", because maybe you are learning a language which there aren't too many native speakers around, and all you know comes from books and audio clips.
Inglise keele irregulaarrsed verbid on mulle lihtsad, sest ma ei mõelnud nende peale liiga palju. Ma vaatasin televiisorit filme ja nüüd räägin ma inglise keelt sama hästi kui see mees. Bruce Lee ühendas oma südame ja mõistuse - shen - päris tavaline meetod Hiinas, kuid Bruce tegi sellega midagi erilist.
Bruce Lee oli täiesti tore inimene. Ta oli parem kui pluralism ja relativism. Kõik oskused ja oskajad pole võrdsed! Even thiking of being the best can be a limitation. I am a showoff.
Kuid ma kavatsen aktsentide õppimisega midagi ilusat, tõelist ja head saavutada. Ma tahaksin keelega midagi ette võtta, näiteks filosoofiat kirjutada või sci-fi'd kirjutada. Sa oled puhas inspiratsioon. Take it easy and look into the term 'intersubjectivity'.
Of course I do! Besides I was just discussing with Mao Zedong about the corpus of Hildegard Von Hildesheim, in pre-mandarin Chinese. Until Pepin the Short interrupted us asking some information about his iPod, in pre-mandarin Chinese as well! Intersubjectivity, almost telepathetic. See? Hear? LOL!!!

Phonetics is as important as grammar. If you don´t use the grammar the way it must be, you won´t be understood. Can you imagine yourself speaking Turkish according to the English grammar?
Can you imagine yourself speaking Chinese with a strong American English accent?
Grammar is the logical structure of a language. People don´t learn grammar at school in the US, but people around them speak English according to English grammar. If you don´t learn that set of rules, you wont be understood
You must not watch his videos on a regular. He is about 50 videos past the points you just made. Watch some of them and you will see his thoughts on this issue.
@Devilshful This is only considering that the learner takes their English grammar with them. The way to eliminate intensive grammar study at the start is to delve into the language as ignorant as possible, but grammar study in the long run is inevitable, yet less strenuous if you don't start at the beginning.
I agree about that but from my own experience I noticed that people feel warm when you speak like them or even try. Honestly, I do not know why. Also some people have the ability to speak like native speakers but the piont is that this is not important when ou learn a language. Thank you for mentioning this problem coz you find ppl who discriminate you because you just speak differently
You're right. The people appreciate it very much when you sound exactly like them. My only point is that, accent is something that's not so important at the beginning of language study.
For Moses, his goal is to get to intermediate level with whatever accent comes naturally.
But for most people, not looking to learn languages for the sake of learning languages, this would not be advisable.
It all depends on your goals.

I don't get is why native English speakers have to learn English grammar when they can't even spell. I always have to help people with spelling.
