wow nice SD40-2 man i didnt know you worked on the railroad and i thought CSX was only in the US did you once live there? im going to be a trucker or work on the railroad probabally a locomotive engineer!!
kicking is where u use the engine to push the car then uncouple it and let it free roll, they didnt use the engine, so its not really kicking. but i guess theres some terminology differences between railroads
Actually its called dropping a car, or freerolling. We do it quite often. Tho I dont care to do it that much. Pretty dangerous esp if we are dropping a car to a coupling. Or for those who dont understand that. Doing that in the video, but coupling into another car while riding that way.
The switching move at the start of your video really was interesting because I have never seen such a move except in yards when cars are being sorted.
There must be a slight dip there before the switch allowing the loads to go on their own own for a few feet.
The only time cars don't have locomotives is when they are in a mjor terminal getting classified or sorted into different trains.
AWESOME!!! This is what my grandpa used to do was back in the day. He used to work for the Milwuakee Road... they've been out of business for YEARS. Cool stuff Sean!
VERY NICE! my dad told me stories of him spotting cars like this.... but they would flip a coin, heads you thow the switch tails you ride the load, which was 1 or 2 loaded tank cars of propane, in the middle of the woods, late at night, w only 6volt lantern as a headlight and pray to god the hand brake works or end up in the woods with a bang. totally frounded apon today. juts the joys of single track mainline spotting back in the day.
Its a bit worrying how the train was half way thru the crossing before the gates had completely lowered.
A very kool and entertaining vid mate.
Like Steve... I too wish I had persued a career in rail.. and concidering I have a 200+ yr history of locomotive engineers etc. in my family...you think it woulda been a given.
Wow Sean you managed to capture 2 repainted Conrail SD's. Nothin like watching bump n runs, but this is a prime example of csx's commercial. How long are those engines holding up that crossing? lmao send that in to CSX
Wow man, you missed one good shunting move, i think they ha to do a move called "half gypsy" in here finland. ( you pull the wagon with lcomotive nad when train is moving, you take off the wagon before switch ahead. and drive your locomotive over it, and then turn the switch to another position before waogon reaches it. ( hard to explain it in english) But that is one nice move to see
Great video even if it is a CSX train and not a NS < Norfolk Southeren.. lol I haven't seen free rolling cars in a long time excepct at the train yard in Roanoke Va where they have the automatic rail switches....
@jdouglasfisher Maybe on your railroad. Where I work we still know how, and are allowed to do this stuff. According to the current GCOR, Rule 7.1, the only switch move not allowed is a full on drop (flying switch). However, should the railroad want to, this can always be superseded in the Special Instructions, since it is not illegal per FRA.
I'm almost embarrassed to say this, but I have the game "RailWorks" and I play it on occassion! I love trucks, so it makes sense that I'd love trains, can't actually do the train thing, so second best is watching videos, the engines in these things are something else, love the sound of them, these two are fantastic
wow sean u have 18wos thats awsome i have 2 of them. driving in those games looks so much like watching your old vids. do u think playing them is anything like trucking?

Static drop.
Unfortunately, this is now outlawed on my division. We've got some areas where this can be pretty fun, or scary your first time.

Currently laid off from CP Rail, which has put me back shifting 18, until I go back to the rails. But I do have to say both run through the blood.

Old school, often referred to as a Dutchman's Switch (gravity switching of railcars without locomotion)
Majorly illegal in both NORAC and G-COR rule books these days.
This guy can end up suspended for doing such.
That being said, Its nice to see old school railroading preservered, but don't let the senior trainmaster see this video.
Joe.

I was wondering about that. The ground didn't look like a grade to start... but I guess just enough huh.
I think everything should go back to old school! Trains, Trucking, PARENTING! Seemed things were better in the day

Agreed, especially the parenting part.
