As a 14 yr. old GnR fan this was the most anticipated TV performance ever for me and they were awesome. The greatest band in the world at their peak playing a great new song.
You have to be a hardcore drummer to notice anything bad about his playing. The tempo is slower than the studio version and the little rolls he does on the ride in the beginning are a bit sloppy. That's not enough though to fire someone.
Steven was fired b/c he was the biggest junkie out of all the guys when they were recording Illusions I & II. He couldn't keep himself together to record so they had to let him go. Shame too, because I dug his playing and that was the slow and timely beginning of the end. Once Izzy left aslo...well, you know.
I read Adler's book and although the band didn't treat him right at times when he says that Duff and Slash let him down on this show he's lying. You can see both of them constantly trying to help him

I helped do the backline on this show through the union. I got to meet all the artists that played and all were down to earth laid back people, course they make art so thaT MAKES THEM A LITTLE MORE interesting than say Joe on the corner. It was a great weekend in Indianapolis

I've just read Adlers autobiography and I feel sorry for him when I see this, he doesnt play badly, he never heard the vocals before and they all played pretty rough(duff makes more misstakes than Steven) but you cant hide your mistakes on drums, I beleive Adler when he says this gig was a stitch up to make him look bad

@aoifeluvzk Something that I picked up when reading Slash's book was that not only was Steven kicked out because of his habits, but also because he was mixed up with some dangerous people. Either he owed dealers money, or he was dealing himself or something.
Also, of all the band, he didn't seem to have the personality to ever keep his habit in check. Case in point - look at him now compared to Slash or Izzy. He's had a stroke etc.

Its so sad because this is one of the only bands that can fully reunite. All the members are alive, I mean, Zeppelin, The Clash, Nirvana. None of them can ever reform because a member is dead, but Guns could, Axl should get his head out of his ass.

@bwhaha13 The original demo version of Civil War with Adler on drums, was slower than the actual recorded version. Thus is what they're are playing in this video.
Steven was so hard done by at this show, he claims he wasnt told the set list before and therefore didnt know the 2 new songs they played. Dunno whether thats true or not, he claims he wasnt fucked up on drugs but I find this hard to believe. What is definatly true though is that his playing here is not great but its nowhere near as bad as its usually made out to be. Slash and Duff have several bum notes throuhout, the song is slow because Slash started playing the intro way too slow
I think this is the best version of this song...I just wised up and found it here on Youtube after looking for a burned out VCR tape I lost for 20 years :-)
0:17 Steven wiping out is pretty funny to watch but when he talks about it in his book he obviously knew his time with Gus was fading fast, little coincidences like that gave the band enough ammo to fire him. assholes....
Well, I can't deny the fact that this is a really fucked-up version of 'Civil War' but I can't blame Steven. He was high as fuck and he kept playing it when someone else probably wouldn't have done nothing but faint. That being said, SLASH started the song incorrectly (not the right tempo). Almost forgot, this version of 'Civil War' is as poor as the first time they played 'November Rain' in Indiana, 91. Slash's solos were pretty fucked-up and I'm a big fan of him but this wasn't Adler's fault.

at 3:05 Slash spits right on the crowd. My dad took me to this show. I was so excited to see my favortie band. What you cant see in this video is the reaction to slash spitting on the crowd. People got PISSED. All the people in the area of where the spit landed threw beer and flipped him off. Axl cursed on live tv. Slash spit on people. You guys ever see Mick and Keef do stuff like that? Ive seen these guys several times live. Never once did they live up to the hype.

@Franklinn2000 well actually what happened is since they were trying to find a reason to kick steven out of the band they didnt tell him they were going to play this song live at farm aid (which they had enevr b4 played live b4 and steven didnt even know the drum patterns and such) Which is why it sounds a bit sloppy

Steven was so hard done by at this show, he claims he wasnt told the set list before and therefore didnt know the 2 new songs they played. Dunno whether thats true or not, he claims he wasnt fucked up on drugs but I find this hard to believe. What is definatly true though is that his playing here is not great but its nowhere near as bad as its usually made out to be. Slash and Duff have several bum notes throuhout, the song is slow because Slash started playing the intro way too slow

Well, I can't deny the fact that this is a really fucked-up version of 'Civil War' but I can't blame Steven. He was high as fuck and he kept playing it when someone else probably wouldn't have done nothing but faint. That being said, SLASH started the song incorrectly (not the right tempo). Almost forgot, this version of 'Civil War' is as poor as the first time they played 'November Rain' in Indiana, 91. Slash's solos were pretty fucked-up and I'm a big fan of him but this wasn't Adler's fault.

Axl was a fucking sack of shit to steven at this concert... you can't blame steven, he didn't even know exactly how to play civil war(the same with down on the farm) back then because they never rehearsed it .... for those who say that he sucked there, read his damn book!!

at 3:05 Slash spits right on the crowd. My dad took me to this show. I was so excited to see my favortie band. What you cant see in this video is the reaction to slash spitting on the crowd. People got PISSED. All the people in the area of where the spit landed threw beer and flipped him off. Axl cursed on live tv. Slash spit on people. You guys ever see Mick and Keef do stuff like that? Ive seen these guys several times live. Never once did they live up to the hype.

ahh its so sad seeing steven like this hes so trashed but its sooo kool how he cant stop smiling he looks so happy on the drums... oh and if you for some reason havent heard his band you need to listen its great watching him play live sober and even happier than hes ever been and adlers appetite in my opinion is atleast 5x as good as the new gnr axl needs to just call it quits and get his old band back together or just stop because if u ask me hes running what used to be rock into the ground

To be honest, the success of Appetite For Destruction is something any band would find impossible to improve upon. I like Slash's new solo album, best thing any of them have done since the good old days. Love the bit when Adler trips up face first into the dum kit as they're coming on to stage!!! If anything Duff Mckagan is the most wasted one in this performance, a few bum bass notes in there!!

@ikiloh yeh, by this time the only sober ones were izzy and axl. (izzy pissed in the galley of a airplane and was on probation so he was clean). You are so right about adler, gnr lost somthing when they got rid of steve. Not taking away from matt though, he is a good drummer.
