A City & Guilds is a 'degree' in something like plastering or wheel-clamping (genuinely). Purely vocational subjects. Nothing wrong with that at all, but the academic world tends to sneer at them. Personally, I think it is far better to teach unruly kids from sink estates subjects that they can then go on to use to get a job rather than forcing them to learn French or Algebra...
