hey, I have a question, can I just use the crystal I harvested out of my dead 50mW green laser? That SHOULD work shouldn't it? If it does, I will but a 1W 808nm on ebay :D
You can remove the crystal and use it. The main problem is collimating the output of the IR laser diode in a spot on the crystal , thus you shoud harvest the lenses which go with your dead laser and use then. Or even better: If you have a lathe you can adapt the brass body of this laser to fit a 1W diode (think of extra cooling of the body of the laser) . I did this but I couldn't get more than 75 mW. What is actually very easy is to replace the 300 mW dead diode.
If you are going to work with infrared lasers go not forget wearing protective glasses. These IR beams are very powerful and since you can not see them (you actually see a dim red) you can harm your eyes very easily. This is an important point.!!!! Save money a bit longer and buy the glasses!!
@toc1955 Yes, thanks for reminding me. I know about the dangers of IR. It is even more dangerous than a normal laser due to the fact you can not see the beam from it, and a higher chance of hidden reflections and all.
do you not need an FAC lens for the 808nm LD? i have a 1W 808nm LD but i can't find an FAC lens for it... will any FAC Lens do or will it have to be matched to my LD?
