Newt was a former history professor before he entered politics. Seems we need some historical perspective here, rather than vitriol from a few faceless bloggers. Don't forget, Bill Clinton signed into law 7 of the 10 items on the Contract w/America . . . a track record worth some respect. The ugliness of some of the posts here are the work of taggers - unworthy of comment.
Wow Kayak that is the type of extremely uninformed opinion that put us where we are today. Take a moment to see the real reason why the banks collapsed. Look for Freddie and Fannie Mae videos with Barney Frank and the rest of the leftists propping them up and stopping any oversight on them until they collapsed. As the great Reagan said: "Government is not the solution, government is the problem." Anybody that thinks the idiots in Washington are going to solve our problems are sadly mistaken.
To the contrary, I am EXTREMELY astute and informed. I do not allow Rove, Fox, and the Neo-Republicans tell me what to think. I do not allow anyone pushing their own agenda tell me what to think.
I read, observe and synthesize info. I research and consider the source of stories pondering what benefit that source would receive from pushing an agenda. THEN I decide. I'm what haters hate most: I think.
Corporate greed drove those bad loans, not some mythical leftist government.
Don't listen to him. That was the 14 year old kid on Huckabee's show. Even a kid knows less goverment, more personal responsibility. Apparently you should grow up.
The Newt is still around pushing his personal agenda?!! Didn't he have to slink out of Washington a couple years back? His 'solutions' sound pretty much like the same old, same old 'give money and tax breaks to the rich' that drove our beloved America down into this desperate depression. No more self-serving Republican policy, thank you.
Gov't forcing banks to give loans to people who could not afford them is what has brought this mortage meltdown and effected economies worldwide.
A Democratic power grab isn't going to fix anything. Only lowering taxes puts money back into peoples hands- which is the only way to get the economy back on track.
Do me a favor. Look up the default rates for actual CRA loans. You'll see they were actually below the national average. It wasn't until greedy brokers and banks realized they could make a buck by offering similar loans outside the purview of the CRA and thus outside of government regulations that we got into this mess. So it wasn't the loans that government "forced" banks to give that caused this. It was the loans that banks gave on their own in hopes of making a quick buck.
yes- people are greedy and mortage brokers pushing loans did not help - but big gov't regulating that low income people should be given loans of 95 to 100% or more of a property values is the main reason. And allowing banks to "consolidate" those loans and sell them to bigger banks was a BAD idea. Thank the democrats for that one too.
This is recycled hash from the 1990's and is what led us into the current economic abyss we are dealing. These failed conservative ideas have been proven over and over to be wrong and destructive. Taht anyone listens and still believes this juck is a testament to the stupidity of the American people.
smigaldi, I take it that you've never owned your own business. Newt it working with all parties, Republican, Democratic, and Independent. It's a tri-partisan effort. To label it "conservative" implies that you may be socialist or communist. Small business owners, the backbone of the US economy, work extremely hard to keep their small businesses profitable, and need gov't to be an ally in support of their operation, not an antagonist.
Great way to put forth bold new ideas to heal the ailing economy, AmericanSolutions. Bring back a disgraced former office holder and have him spew the same old platitudes and failed policy ideas. Reduce corporate taxes!? Eliminate the capital gains tax!? Bold new ideas. More tax cuts for the rich. I am so impressed at the freshness of your brand new vision.
Reducing Corporate taxes won't do anything to create jobs. Especially if you think that they are going to bring jobs back to the USA. Have you ever heard of tariffs?
JSB, tariffs effect trade, and do not effect where a corporation decides to headquarter their operation. Reducing corporate taxes will encourage businesses to relocate to the US; therefore creating more US jobs. More US jobs = more good. Yes?
Reduce Corporate taxes - something like 12% of corporations actually pay their taxes. Tariffs hold other countries to our standard of living or a reasonable standard of living for ALL people. The USA can not compete with Eastern countries because they have no employment standards. Have you ever asked yourself why all your electronic toys are so cheap? Look into it - and you tell me if the average citizen worker in the USA can live like these people.
You're confusing the location of manufacturing with where a corporate headquarters are located. Take Nissan for example, its headquartered in Japan, but cars are manufactured in Tennessee. Why shouldn't the US encourage the Nissans of the world to relocate to the US? Has nothing to do with where cheap toys are made. White collar jobs are jobs too.
both parties suck as far as I'm concerned you got a bunch of old lawyers and polticans in the same room together you get a cluster fuck. so much bitching at one another If I had the chance I'd kill all of them and put real fucking blue collar people in there and some damn accountants that know how to keep a fucking budget. you got way to many eliteist assholes in there I mean john kerry gets fucking 1000 dollar haircuts but he knows what the average 100,000 dollar a year family is going thru?
Repubs and Dems have been in congress. The dems made the banks lower their lendeing standards and voila, poison assets! Kick up the gas prices and put a crunch on the individual and suddenly he can't pay his mortgage. The repubs spent our money 'like drunken saylors' and didn't do oversight. We need to put an end to two party rule. Obama is no different. I was hoping he would bring in new faces with new ideas, but that didn't happen. The world needs a prosperous USA.
Newt is saying that everyone paying off debt would be a good thing. That's stupid, if there was no debt there'd be no money. That's what the stimulus packages are really doing, basically jump starting the economy by simply creating money that didn't exist thanks to lack of mortgages and loans being taken out. It's a short term fix, and shitty policy to sell your own future out, but it's our system, and what are you going to do?
Newt and the conversative base will have a uphill battle as you can see from some of the comments criticizing Bush and the Republicans. The problem was that they failed the conservative principles when they had the power to implement them, now it is too late. The past congress spent and raised the debt, the tax cuts did work, the Fanny Mae loans did the major damage etc. Only the tax cuts were a piece of the conservative ideas, the rest is the liberal spending.
tonynappy0924, get off the racist tirade that Demarcates or liberal spend your hard earned money on minorities and the poor. Fanny Mae was only a small part of the problem. Check up on current facts on what really caused this problem. As far as the fat cat on capital hill there is no different in a Dem or a Rep. That is another lie they want you to continue to believe.
I agree, but I fucking hope you are wrong. I'd like to see both Dems AND Repubs finally stand up to bad ideas and vote what they honestly believe would be better for Americans. Partisan politics should be secondary to what is best for America
Racist? Fanny Mae was the major reason for the housing bubble and pressure to make loans to people who could not afford a house. How sad the libs like you throw labels around, they are usually just projecting themselves. Calm down... you are going to give yourself an illness. You now have the Messiah and the White House and Congress, maybe the courts too. For the rest of us, brace yourselves.
Ok let me get this straight... Obamas been in power for a few weeks now and Newt is suggesting that Obamas plan is bad, When Obama asked them for input and new ideas, they came up with tax cuts.
George Bush was in power for 8 years and where the FUCK was Newt!!! Yet he wants to leave old politics behind...where were his BALLS when Bush was playing Dr. Evil????
It seems to me that elected republicans have no fucking backbone or moral compass beyond their own self-interest.
Obama's team is changing all the policies on capital hill and these money men are going to try to make him look like an idiot. Don't trust republicans going against our President. It seems they are running scared to me.. That's just my thoughts anyway!
Really Newt. Give more tax breaks to the multi-national corporations that shipped all our jobs overseas so they can sell Coca Cola to India and open off-shore bank accounts. You say the Government does not have the American peoples' best interest at heart. I say big corporations do not have American interest at heart. Invest in family owned and run businesses whether its a multi-million dollar business or a one man hotdog stand.
theres over 5mil unemployd. thats 5mil we need buying cars, homes, insurance,401ks etc. if we gave each $100,000 and 6 mounths to buy certain items by certain percent. who would go to work? logers ,lumber companys, hardware, construction, carpenders, autoworkers. small bus. big bus. it would cause a chain reaction to american prosperity. as long those people are afraid to spind or can not afford to. the deeper we go into the big R. dont give banks money to loan them, that they can't pay back. daaaaa
Actually giving out mortgages and loans at records rates to undeserving non-asian minorities who defaulted at record rates really worked out pretty pretty well hunh? That was the Democrats agenda fucking us.
5uper5tring is beating the same ole drum that has been proven inaccurate. Catch up a hand full of bad loans did not cause this problem. However I have to agree with you Angleboot... they need to ramp up deportation of all illegals.
Democrats still had a lot of power and their agenda of making housing affordable for economically incompetents via fixed interest rates and force politically correct lending practices created the bubble and allowed for it violent collapse.
President Bush had the reign for 8 yrs, walked into office with a $200 billion budget surplus, blew it, all the while doubling the national debt to $10 trillion dollars. Republicans have little credibility in my opinion.
I'm skeptical of Newt because of his past failures to live up to conservative principles of the "Contract with America."
However, if targeted tax breaks for small business (under 100 employees) is what is needed to fuel our job engine (small business employs 80% of the American workforce), then I'd be for it. I would be opposed to any breaks or further bailouts for big business (they're the ones offshoring our jobs, and squandering handouts, besides they hold too much political power).

@ countess1900

Newt: Hi, I'm a Republican and I'm a freakin' hypocrite.....

Old Newt doing his part to keep Americans poor!

Invest in family owned and run businesses whether its a multi-million dollar business or a one man hotdog stand.

theres over 5mil unemployd. thats 5mil we need buying cars, homes, insurance,401ks etc. if we gave each $100,000 and 6 mounths to buy certain items by certain percent. who would go to work? logers ,lumber companys, hardware, construction, carpenders, autoworkers. small bus. big bus. it would cause a chain reaction to american prosperity. as long those people are afraid to spind or can not afford to. the deeper we go into the big R. dont give banks money to loan them, that they can't pay back. daaaaa

Why is Newt even still relevant. He spent all his time in congress calling Clinton a sleaze when he was guilty of the EXACT same thing.
countess1900 3 years ago
Those Bush policies worked out well huh Newt?
More tax cuts? Dumbass.

Actually giving out mortgages and loans at records rates to undeserving non-asian minorities who defaulted at record rates really worked out pretty pretty well hunh? That was the Democrats agenda fucking us.

oh thats' nothing, just wait till Obama give all 12 million illegals amnesty. That's where he'll get his road and bridge workers.
ANGLEBOOT 3 years ago
5uper5tring is beating the same ole drum that has been proven inaccurate. Catch up a hand full of bad loans did not cause this problem. However I have to agree with you Angleboot... they need to ramp up deportation of all illegals.

repubs were in control for seven years.
il128 3 years ago
Democrats still had a lot of power and their agenda of making housing affordable for economically incompetents via fixed interest rates and force politically correct lending practices created the bubble and allowed for it violent collapse.
5uper5tring 3 years ago
repubs had a 60 senate seats and controlled the house and the white house. The whole responsibility thing... Take some..
il128 3 years ago
in 2004 repubs had 55 not 60.

President Bush had the reign for 8 yrs, walked into office with a $200 billion budget surplus, blew it, all the while doubling the national debt to $10 trillion dollars. Republicans have little credibility in my opinion.
onemanband1963 3 years ago
True, republicans have lost their conservative base.
