You could have sound money without this gold nonsense - but go ahead; some societies use shells as money (go figure).
Shells avoid the dollar trap, so I think that's clever. You might as well use soft shiny metal, dug from the ground as money; but don't expect anyone to offer you any shells for your gold - which is a shame, because shells buy food, water and shelter
