Hello stompy, it would be very nice for your recordings to connect the mass cable with the soundcard, or the pre amplifier. All your recordings have a deep noise print, in german wie say Netzbrummen to that. Your recordings are fantastic and historical.
Added to my 1906 playlist. You can hear the sounds of any past year back to 1900 within my 400 music playlists. Working to make all play at least 2 hours.
It has a german title. Another argument, that it was a german composition. And I think, that youre right, the Kaiser Franz-Garde-Grenadier-Regiment Nr. 2 was placed in germany, so they probably had recorded it there.
Thanks for your comment. The german title is no hint at all, because they used most deliberate translations at that time (Coon Band Contest = Negerständchen). However I agree that it is most probably a german tune. Apart from the last strain, which is heavily syncopated, it sounds quite european. And no doubt it is a german recording. But who is the composer of this piece?
I can´t give you any informations about the composer, but i think, it is just an european composition and a try of making music which sounds exotic for german listeners.
I mean, it was played by a prussian military orchestra... i don´t think it has much in common with "real" jazz.
The performance is no jazz of course, but it rather belongs to the early ragtime-flavored style. Believe me, even prussian military bands played not only diluted "exotic" character pieces, but also real Rags and Cakewalks.

The song is "Ma Ragtime Baby" by American composer Fred S. Stone. It was published in 1898. Hope this helps!

I can´t tell you this, sorry.
I made a mistake, i wanted to tell you, that the regiment was placed in Berlin, and thats why I think, that the record was made there, too.
