With my patterns I dont touch the pattern but copy it onto tracing paper/grease proof paper so Iv always got the original. The originals are so very delicate and dont last more then one or two pinnings. This way you can alter your copy to your dog and then make a cardboard template.

I just buy baby clothes and make some alterations. just the same. not much sewing needed.
