Now listen here Byte. I am a HUUUUGE Cave Story fan. I've been playing it since it's release. I also bought the one on Wiiware. The new graphics and music suck major ass. In fact, the only thing good about the Wiiware version was Hard mode. I am a strong supported of Pixel and all of his stuff. I also intend on buying the 3ds version. But unless he releases a Cave Story 2... I will be disappointed.
If i could play only one game, It would definitely be, and i also highly reccomend, Cave Story. It was made all by one man, Daisuke Amaya with his nickname being pixel and the game has so much innovation, enemies, bosses, items, weapons, features, areas and a nice old 8-bit feel to it with both the graphics and sound. It is totally hardcore and i highly recommend it if you love blasting up enemies and exploring lots of areas on games. High octane. 10/10.
I remember I played Cave Story for the first time on WiiWare, so I'm a bit biased towards the new graphics and sound. However because of that bias I hate the fixed tracks.
As a programmer, I'd like to offer the humble opinion, that such game is not, relatively, difficult to program. However, Cave Story would be a difficult to conceive of. It's evident that 'Pixel', clearly had a passion for games, and his creation fits right along with other classics, like Metroid and Castlevania. There is really a lot to appreciate in the game, which is summed up well, in this review. I would personally recommend it, as Cave Story is both fun, and invokes nostalgia.
thank you so much for cave story! i'm so thrilled to play it i played it for the ENTIRE weekend (not really) and it's a phenomenal game! and thanks for free indie rapid fire ^^
I've got to disagree on the "Buy it" label, unless you DO have a wide-screen TV. Honestly, playing it on my tiny old TV with no real resolution enhancement...it's not that great. The new modes aren't that great either. I cannot say that anything they offer is enough to make me feel like I've spent my money well.
@Introbulus The point of buying it (in my opinion) would be to support the creator so he can make more incredible games like this. And also, I don't think you can beat the feeling of owning such an awesome indie on an actual console.
@TheGuyThatWins I'll give you that. It does feel good supporting Pixel. But at the same time, I wouldn't recommend the purchase to anyone who doesn't have a screen better than their monitor for a TV. The upgrade is not as good as it could have been.
@Introbulus Ah finally someone who can accept an argument sensibly without being a troll. I do agree with you on that one but for certain people it might provide a feeling of nostalgia for some people to play a 2-D platformer on an old tube "jus' like the good ol' days".
@TheGuyThatWins Ohh. I will grant you that. <.<; It's not like I didn't buy Super Mario Bros on my Wii just so I could play it on my TV either. *cough*
Robot Wants Kitty was good, but there's no way that it should have won over Desktop Dungeon. I suspect it was because it was flash vs download. It's not a fair comparison, because a lot more people will play the flash game than anything they have to download. I'm the same way a lot of the time, but I saw the word rouge-like and went for it. Maybe Bytejacker should have all flash one week and all download the next to make it fair?
@adsilcott We try to keep as many of the games multiplatform - but we focus more on selecting three quality games. I'd hate to hobble the quality of our picks just to keep things multiplatform.
Alex kid died for our sins!. But darn it all to hell for me not getting the reference at the end... the best i could think of was the speed run hint under one hour for Donkey Kong Country oh well...
@berugaslabor The end wasn't a nod to any single game, really - just to the whole "you missed one tiny thing so you get the bad ending" trap that most games fall into.
I've loved these past few bytejackers. I honestly wouldn't mind if they all were like this, with a little side story. I'd miss the roof top, but I think this is better
@App13c0r3 I like them switching it up, every episode a bit different. As long as the episode keeps the core elements I'm willing to see them do anything. It's just too bad the show has a smaller viewership. While I understand there is a narrow market for indie gaming this is by far one of the best made shows on Youtube.
@ImmortalDestructor Thanks! It's an uphill battle, like you say - we're a smaller show that covers a smaller aspect of gaming - but I think that if more people knew about the games we covered, they'd really be into them. If you can, please spread the word - about the show and about indie gaming!
Truth be told I watched a complete walkthrough of Cave Story on the Wii and I think it is, attention, NOT worth a purchase. Cave Story is an AMAZING game and you should play it but the Wii version has literally not a single gameplay feature that wouldn't feel tacked on and couldn't be replaced by dozens of fan-made MODs for it.
Download it on the PC and play it and you'll have exactly the same brilliant game Nintendo wants you to pay $12 for. -.-
@GrandHighGamer If you just wanted to give the creator money then you had six years to donate some, also guaranteeing that it all goes to Pixel's pocket instead of Nintendo's, who went for a quick cash-in.
