However, the harassment by the Sea Shepherds is NOT the solution. In fact it only raises tensions and reduces the chances for real change. Being Rude is seldom beneficial no matter the culture, but especially to the Japanese culture, rude is taboo and pointless.

Dolphins are very intelligent animals but not as intelligent as a human in most respects. The regulations IWC set for the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary are being violated, however Japan has used loopholes and procedural rules to avoid having these regulations apply to them. Finally the "harassment", right or wrong, started with the SSCS.

(all but Alaska) Since then wolves were reintroduced into Yellowstone National park. Both the wolves and the elk and bison started flourishing better! Now there are more of all these species once the balance was restored! It worked so well red wolves (eastern subspecies) were reintroduced into the Carolinas! Other wolf populations return naturally to states like Michigan.

The cost of not relocating or finding some viable solution may be higher. Genetic bottlenecks in some very critically endangered populations may cause them to continue to decline even without hunting.
Japan is the inventor of the drive hunt. It is possible (if they try hard enough) that there may be a possible way to modify the drive hunt into a drive relocation at a reasonable cost.

The protesting and the negative reaction to it would be dramatically be reduced if Japan was seen as a leader in conservation attempts to restore the ecology of the oceans. Some radicals may still protest. It is their right. But the vast majority of world opinion would dramatically shift in favor of the Japanese.

--the hunt is deeply ingrained into local tradition (ex. centuries-old annual festivities marking the start of the hunting season, much like european harvest festivities) it would be difficult (to say the least) to turn around a centuries-old habit/point of view.

Dolphins are not "pests" either. They are highly intelligent animals that are very crucial in the balance of the ocean ecosystems. Many species of fish birds and other cetaceans depend on dolphins ability to tightly pack bait balls (sardines anchovies pilchards herring etc)

I have a lot of ideas actually. Some may work and others may not. Further study is needed. Experimental test cases may need to be done. Displaced Japanese fisherman and whalers may be able to help.
Example: Instead of killing dolphins as pests it may be possible to relocate them into the areas Japan (and others) foolishly exterminated them. (like Iki) Certain populations of whales may also benefit from relocations from high pop areas
See the sad part is Japan purposely kills 12,000 dolphins a year thinking that will increase fish stocks in the wild. In truth their hunting of dolphins is probably a significant part of the reason fish stocks like tuna and yellowtail continue to collapse.
In general more dolphin means more fish since many species work as a team with dolphins to catch bait fish like sardines, anchovies, herring, pilchards etc...

I have debated many Japanese that believe in all honesty that they must kill excess dolphins as "pest control" because dolphins eat fish and that dolphins eat the fish Japan needs for survival due to their large size. They have also declared Minke "cockroaches of the sea". Believe it or not it has been claimed by many Japanese that Minke must be killed to allow Blue, Fin, Sei and other whales to recover.

@sohcsarewicked In the ocean, part of the predator prey equation is energy expended to catch food. Dolphins being highly intelligent can form the bait in tight balls. Tuna, Yellowtail, Marlin and others can do this too but using far more energy. However that is not all. It seems Tuna and other fish can pull a loose ball up from the shoal within the reach of the dolphin. (who then pack it tighter and to the surface) Meanwhile seabirds also help the team from above.

I neither know or care about the 'insult' or the 'desecration'. I have, however, seen The Cove, and would applaud most direct action to put an end to this annual atrocity. IMO anyone who would seek to deflect from the real "disgusting behaviour", ie the barbaric slaughter of dolphins at Taiji, either has a vested interest or is disturbingly lacking in compassion.

However, the harassment by the Sea Shepherds is NOT the solution. In fact it only raises tensions and reduces the chances for real change. Being Rude is seldom beneficial no matter the culture, but especially to the Japanese culture, rude is taboo and pointless.

They are also insanely dangerous to eat, they have high levels of mercury that cause birth defects and many other problems. And technically Sea Shepherds aren't stopping the whaling in Japan... They're in the Antarctic where it's actually illegal to whale.

@CalinCollective This is very biased. The mercury levels of some dolphins is high, but these are primarily killed as "pest control". Dolphins are very intelligent animals but not as intelligent as a human in most respects. The regulations IWC set for the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary are being violated, however Japan has used loopholes and procedural rules to avoid having these regulations apply to them. Finally the "harassment", right or wrong, started with the SSCS.

Mercury is a real problem but you are right, SSCS just use it as an excuse. Japan knows about mercury.
That is why I said, "these are primarily killed as "pest control"". Dolphins with toxic levels of mercury are seldom eaten. Most are used for other purposes. Although a few have gotten past Japanese inspectors and entered the Japanese food system, most are not. Japan encourages the hunt on the theory that less dolphins = more fish

There were 2 major outbreaks in Japan caused by eating sea food from contaminated waters.This form of mercury poisoning caused more than 2000 officially recognized cases of which nearly all either died or are permanent cripples with non treatable brain and nerve damage. 10,000 + more unofficial cases.
Concentrations are highest in shell fish and top predators in a marine environment, but also in other fish.

It is not something to play games with. It can be quite deadly. It is also very common in many types of seafood especially top predators. Depending on species it can be as much as 20-30 times higher than Japans own health ministry recommends.
ex: Harbor porpoise is low while bottlenose dolphin are high.

@tenacioustaut The people of Minamata and Niigata are extreme cases to be sure. However, they are from eating mercury bioaccumulated sea food. Since some species of whales and dolphins (not all) also bioaccumulate mercury, there is a very real danger of eating to much mercury if not very careful.
I don't personally know anyone from Taiji who was damaged by mercury poisoning. However pretending it isn't an issue is really foolish. It is a top pollution concern in Japan (and other nations)

I, too, want to see a day where hunting & animal captivity is phased out from society. However, I don't see a way where this could happen with a conversation like this:
--"A sudden ban on these hunts would displace a bunch of families. Do you have ideas on how to deal with this?"

The first thing that should happen is the fishermen and whalers and their ships should be hired by ICR (govt sponsored if necessary) to help in restoring the Health and Balance of the oceans. Especially around Japan. This insures Japans food supply to the future. Thus it is critical national importance for Japan.
Killing dolphins as "pest control" is wrong!

@rosepetal108 Thank you for the thoughtful answer; it's really refreshing to see someone with a non-demonizing, objective point of view. Coming up with realistic suggestions like these and presenting concrete data/evidence that the "pest control" argument is total BS to the IWC/Japanese gov't would be about 10 million times more effective than what SS is doing right now. As long as level-headed people like you are around, there IS hope.

@kwanzalimited A similar situation happened in the USA. Years ago wolves were exterminated from the lower 48 states. (all but Alaska) Since then wolves were reintroduced into Yellowstone National park. Both the wolves and the elk and bison started flourishing better! Now there are more of all these species once the balance was restored! It worked so well red wolves (eastern subspecies) were reintroduced into the Carolinas! Other wolf populations return naturally to states like Michigan.

The cost of not relocating or finding some viable solution may be higher. Genetic bottlenecks in some very critically endangered populations may cause them to continue to decline even without hunting.
Japan is the inventor of the drive hunt. It is possible (if they try hard enough) that there may be a possible way to modify the drive hunt into a drive relocation at a reasonable cost.

@rosepetal108 forgive me if I'm playing devil's advocate a little TOO convincingly :P I'm Japanese-Canadian and I hang out alot on japanese sites so I see their point of view too. I was born and bred in Canada so I tend to side with "whaling is/should be obsolete" though. Most of all though, I think Japan is picking the wrong battle when it comes to this issue. In an ideal world, they'd see that they'll benefit in soooo many ways if they'd go with what you're suggesting *sigh*

The protesting and the negative reaction to it would be dramatically be reduced if Japan was seen as a leader in conservation attempts to restore the ecology of the oceans. Some radicals may still protest. It is their right. But the vast majority of world opinion would dramatically shift in favor of the Japanese.

@rosepetal108 I should have organized the below points in order.What I wanted to show were roadblocks getting in the way of having a meaningful,productive discussion with Japan to convince them to ease their grip on this practice It might be a chicken/egg type of argument, but acting out physically(a la SS)and accusing these people of getting some perverse sexual enjoyment out of killing dolphins and beating & cutting their wives(check out "Our Encounter with Dolphin Molesters")is NOT the way

@rosepetal108 Too often, people choose the easier, cheaper way to deal with this issue: extermination. The way I see it, these are the issues that make Taiji more complicated:
--the hunt is deeply ingrained into local tradition (ex. centuries-old annual festivities marking the start of the hunting season, much like european harvest festivities) it would be difficult (to say the least) to turn around a centuries-old habit/point of view.

@rosepetal108 --they see no difference in hunting for game animals. like native indian cultures, there's a ritualistic manner to the hunt. it's a complex paradox of seeing the animals purely as prey to be hunted and not to be sympathised with, while also showing deep respect for the prey and the sustenance it provides (which results in an almost religious, ritual-like festivity and monuments).

1)Part of the cost would be offset by employing out of work whalers and fishermen. Increased employment causes a boost to the economy.
2)Another long term cost offset is by restoring the balance of oceans ecology, it allows higher sustainable harvests of fisheries (if done wisely)
3)Other nations may also help when involving pelagic species that frequent their waters as well.

Dolphins are not humans. They don't have "rights" like some sort of higher spiritual "sentient being".
However:
Dolphins are not "pests" either. They are highly intelligent animals that are very crucial in the balance of the ocean ecosystems. Many species of fish birds and other cetaceans depend on dolphins ability to tightly pack bait balls (sardines anchovies pilchards herring etc)

I have a lot of ideas actually. Some may work and others may not. Further study is needed. Experimental test cases may need to be done. Displaced Japanese fisherman and whalers may be able to help.
Example: Instead of killing dolphins as pests it may be possible to relocate them into the areas Japan (and others) foolishly exterminated them. (like Iki) Certain populations of whales may also benefit from relocations from high pop areas

See the sad part is Japan purposely kills 12,000 dolphins a year thinking that will increase fish stocks in the wild. In truth their hunting of dolphins is probably a significant part of the reason fish stocks like tuna and yellowtail continue to collapse.
In general more dolphin means more fish since many species work as a team with dolphins to catch bait fish like sardines, anchovies, herring, pilchards etc...

@sohcsarewicked Yes they honestly believe they are "balancing" nature. I have debated many Japanese that believe in all honesty that they must kill excess dolphins as "pest control" because dolphins eat fish and that dolphins eat the fish Japan needs for survival due to their large size. They have also declared Minke "cockroaches of the sea". Believe it or not it has been claimed by many Japanese that Minke must be killed to allow Blue, Fin, Sei and other whales to recover.

@sohcsarewicked In the ocean, part of the predator prey equation is energy expended to catch food. Dolphins being highly intelligent can form the bait in tight balls. Tuna, Yellowtail, Marlin and others can do this too but using far more energy. However that is not all. It seems Tuna and other fish can pull a loose ball up from the shoal within the reach of the dolphin. (who then pack it tighter and to the surface) Meanwhile seabirds also help the team from above.
