I love Hildegard Behrens. She was a fine Salome and Tosca but I really don't think she was suited to Isolde and Brunnhilde. Her Elisabeth in Tanhauser is gorgeous. Beautiful, young-sounding and really fabulous; this is one of her really excellent Wagner roles that didn't require too much of her. Her Senta from Flying Dutchman is also quite good.
Yes, she was a fantastic soprano,and to have sung and performed with her many time was an honor. We were in Dusseldorf together for about six years and we last met at the Met in 1989.
I think she did it well but it's not the best performance of this role. However, I invite everyone to listen her Strauss' Elektra Interpretation. That's the best among the best.
One of the best Wagner interpreters of all time. Her Isolde is for me the best ever
