You'd be correct. The original poem does not consider who Grendel's father was at all, although one must presume he was some sort of monster as well. The movie adds a new theme to the story in its modern retelling of the story. ;)
The poem we have today was written down by a Christian monk in Christianity's earliest days in Brittania, he likely hearing the tale from a festival storyteller. Thus the Christian themes found in the text (that Grendel is a descendant of Cain, for instance). ;)
I love this movie, I saw it several times, at times watching it, I can't tell wether it's animation or real! Isn't weeglove (Beowulf's second man) the guy from Braveheart....the guy with the big beird, what's his name.....oh yeah HEMISH.
I wish it would have been real action instead of CGI covered. The movie is still badass though. I would like to see this EXACT movie but done in real life with CGI that's only necessary (the dragon, most fight scenes) but with real people.
And yes, I know it was done using that actual actors faces.
I wish more movies were made with this CG tech. It allows for so much more. You'd change your mind if you had seen it in IMAX 3D as it was meant to be viewed.

its a referance to grendels mother later on if you watch the dvd extra it explains it a very little, its basically showing early on that he has tendancies to lie about monsters killed/ monsters he's boned.
Yes, if you look closely, the mermaid does resembles the beautiful water demon Beowulf makes an alliance with later, so this is supposed to be the first meeting of Beowulf & Grendel's mother who is the female demon-shape shifter. Since, Beowulf is adding demons to his story-"it was 9 sea monsters" if you remember one of his men says "last week it was 3 sea monsters" he may be imagining that he saw her at that adrenalin-pumped time or maybe he did meet her then, it is an omen of the future to be.
lol, he explains it, since grendel has no wepons he fights with no wepons or armor either, not to mention he's just so ungodly badass that the wepons and armor would only slow him down

seen it last night... the movie is a whole bunch of macho blood spilling and the main character getting a boner when he screams his own name out loud. the only reason to see the movie is angelina jolie.
Just to say that movie was awesome and in 3D was much better. Anglina Jolie was nice too though I was kinda hoping to learn how that dragon can come out of Anglina.... I read the book too it said the dragon was just a lizard/ guardian of the cave that had burried treasure of princes and kings.

Why didn't this get nominated for Best Animated Movie in The Golden Globes or Oscars??? This is the best animated film, both visually and in entertainment - ever.

Oh man, this drama is amazing. A thilling action film that proves CGI is possible, and is an action thiler and also a fantasy -- an amazing thriller of a drama with amazing acting.

Yeah, I agree. They made the story into a condpiracy about Grendel's mother. I read an excerpt for one of my classes, and the movie is nothing like the actually tale.

Wow man, is this a trailer than is fan-made or actually officially made? Which one is it? Because if this is fan-made, then .... WOW! This is 1000000 times better than the theatrical trailer AND it has awesome stuff in it. I loved the movie, and I love this trailer!! It's brilliant. After-all, this legend ... I AM BEOWULF!!!!!!

I loved this movie! Such great action, battles, drama and graphics were the greatest ever made ...But, this film doesn't have any susbstance on top, so it's kinda NOT the best movie ever made . But it's good.
