  • Its going backwards if you north of the equator.

  • Hi Simon Fortney !

Gratulation from Savonius Magic - Patent

    Hook-WindRotor System's

    YouTube savoniusbalaton's channel

  • I could never be wrong but is your blades backwards? I have heard so troubling news that if we all discover a system home energy and everyone gets on board with it that the Government will just tax us like the local government did in Oregon. They charged anyone who got a hybrid car a gas savings tax. Now it is our Government, you know the one that has our back (they recently broke that too) that give billions to power companies for them to build big dollar wind farms with turbines built overseas

  • @StarTrek2012 The VAWT must have half the blades moving backwards at any given time - it's simply part of the design. Only a few of the blades are actually producing power - one of the reasons that VAWT are often expensive to construct - large materials cost per unit of power production. Also, Oregon has not enacted any sort of "gas savings tax". Oregon is considering switching to a "mileage tax", instead of a "fuel tax", charging by distance traveled, instead of fuel used.

  • Nice project. Thanks for sharing

  • very nice!!!

  • plywood will rot quickly ,better cover it with fiberglass

  • I: like the design!

  • Purchase your own wind turbine kit or parts for your Sovereign independence. Don't be a slave to the electric companies. 1500 Watt all inclusive turbine kit for about $1,500. Go Soveriegn! We have everything from charge controllers to Inverters. visit Sovereign's Depot @ sovdepot.com

  • Once you get to to use lighter materials the turbine will work harder and thus produce plenty of electricity

  • I like your design. It seems like this technology could be 'stacked' on top of one another somehow like 10 high, so one unit of 10 could produce a substantial amount of energy.

  • Brilliant design! You must be a very, focused person. I envy this.

  • @klhudson1957 i take laxatives, do you?

  • Put it on a generator and see what kind of useable power you can get from it.

  • @AlternativePowerMan you could power a Cam and piston with penis hole and make a wanking machine

  • put solar panels on the blades of any wind turbine and get both powers at once and if one is not being used the other one is being used.kenneth van horn

  • good job , nice craftsmanship, it's always an inspiration to see the efforts of individuals solving design issues in a way that challenges ones own ability , well done.

  • Impressive.

  • Hey simon, right now were making a vert wind turbine as a capstone project for your undergrad. For you airfoils did you use any specific NACA airfoil design?

  • did u make the plans or buy them ? looks really well made...

  • Nice. Barrel type seems to have an advantage over

the fan type. It can remain stationary and catch wind

without the need to swivel. Less long term maintenance

  • Good work.

  • would a car alternator be too hard to turn -by these turbines??? it already is set up for pulley configuration..and i suggest using prolong super lubricant (on bearings and armature .(its non conductive as well) bearings will last considerably longer with it.

  • Great design and detail! Very Cool!

  • it's a nice looking rig, Im doing something symilar, but a little larger, and sitting on a car hub, with a motorcycle disc brake setup to slow it down when wind is too heavy

  • This type of design seems more efficient than the giant wind turbines presently in use.

  • If you glue a couple of neodymium magnets to the bottom of the rotor and have a coil underneath you should get some energy.

  • w w w.youtube.com/watch?v=Mlwu_5byzsM

  • Thats all it does?

  • Nice looking VAWT, Simon - is there any technical thinking behind the 5 blade savonius design as opposed to say 4 or 6 blades? (from a purely aesthetic point of view odd blades seem more elegant , somehow!)

  • Looks good. If you don't mind me asking, how did you determine the depth of your "blades." Many people just use half cylinders. Did you find that your shallower design was more efficient?

  • Good job, buddy! What is the wind speed in the video? Ciao from Italy.

  • Thanks. I don't know didn't have a anemometer i would guess it was about 8 to 10 meters per second, so it was a fairly good breeze. I haven't tested it under load yet but i am working on a new turbine. I'm going to use aluminum for the hubs and thinner gauge stainless for the foils. It should put out a good amount of power.

  • if you put solar cells on the blades you would have a Hy- bred device.

  • @adventphotoltd

that would be interesting. Now that flexible resilient cells are common, you could probably do it.

I wonder if it would add much though, with all the switching between conditions. It might end up doing nothing but powering itself. I think you might get more just by adding a panel up top.

  • This is a great design for the DIY'er.

I've always thought that this kind of turbine would work best on a boat (especially a sail boat).

I used to have a regular three bladed turbine and it would make a lot of noise. Most annoyingly, it would spin up and down and lose it's bite on the wind when the boat would rock back and forth (especially at anchor).

This seems like it would maintain a more constant flow with changing wind direction.

  • Hello, how would you mount the motor and would you have to build a fram around it to keep it sturdy? I am wondering how much power output it would make. Finally. How much would you sell your blueprints for?

  • Hi, I used a steel bar for the axis, so a frame is not necessary. I mounted a sprocket to the bottom of the rotor using a bearing, flanges and bolts. My intent was to use sprockets to increase the rpm output. but I have decided that pulleys and belts are are better fit as well as more cost effective. As far as power output I haven't found a suitable generator. Finally. I will work on blueprints, but for now its all up in my head rattling around with all the other BS.

  • @SimonFortney Did you ever end up finding a generator?

  • Hi, I like your turbine. I think i'll use it in my TURWIND. btw, wht u think of it?

    Ciao!

  • I watched the video of your TURWIND. Good stuff! I would be honored to know that my VAWT influenced your design and to see you incorporate some of the ideas. Let me know if you have any questions. I will be watching for new posts of your TURWIND. Keep up the good work!

  • I have a question. Do u think that my TURWIND can extract some lift from its wings. I think yours can, but mine I have some doubt cause its surface is completely closed whereas your wings let the air flow behind them. I also hope u find your time to keep up the good work!

  • i hope you dont mind but i favoriote this one because i want to make a copy.

  • not a bad design. but how much power..

  • Sorry, moved out of state to work on commercial turbines. Never got a chance to complete the unit. what your watching is just rotor assembly spinning without any load. I am working on a new model with lighter materials like thinner gauge stainless steel and PVC hub assembly.

  • Well... if you cant figure out anything from my video, do a search for the trash can turbine. maybe you can wrap your primitive little mind around that one. This was just my version of a VERT rotor assembly that I wanted to show other people interested in making one of (THEIR OWN). So if you cant figure it out, then go buy a kit. Their probably selling them at Walmart by now. I don't have time to teach a "moron" like you how to figure it out for yourself. WTF

  • @SimonFortney you are a right knob head what a constructive reply, he was only asking and critising

  • Hi Masuoka1, sorry I was havin a bad day. That reply was intended for Mr. Koolstadt and his Comment "Nice whirlygig. Thanks for no info moron." What the heck is a knob head?

  • cool designe has the look of efishancy in it ,i can see lots of sales if efeshancy is reasonable , cheers j

  • Fish Fancy for sureee

  • Greetings Simon, any chance you'd have some idea of the power output in terms of horsepower vs windspeed? I'm just getting interested in wind power. Since the verticals need no provision for wind direction, they seem to be the easiest to tie several turbines together via pulleys/belts to drive one alternator in a relatively small area. Thanks for the video. Wiz.

  • Also my intention was to grid tie with a UL listed inverter that had back feed cut off and use net metering instead of using battery's. They are too expensive and need to be replaced every few years.

  • Wow yes thats very observant, but if you look at the name of the video it says (wind turbine vertical axis ROTOR) the key word being ROTOR. This video is just a nice version of a VERT ROTOR that i wanted to share with everyone. I could not finish it because i have relocated out of state to work on 2.3 mega watt turbines out west. I will be working on a new more complete version of the VERT soon and it will have all the necessary components.

  • @SimonFortney curious, what state will you be working in. i currently live in oklahoma and many new turbines have been installed. i see the blades go down the highways regularly they must be 100 feet long.

  • I work on a wind farm in south western Iowa for a company called Siemens. Our farm consists of 2.3 megawatt turbines. The company also has a blade manufacturing facility in northern Iowa and we have started several new wind farms in Oklahoma. The turbines I work on have a 93 meter blade diameter which would be approximately 150 foot blades.

  • @SimonFortney thank you for responding.

  • " all for around one hundred dollars."

That's nice, sad thing is that battery's, alternators and inverters are expensive things.

  • very nice

  • Very nice looking windmill! I can tell just from the video that you got a lot of satisfaction watching it spin. :-)

  • What did you use for bearings?

  • I picked up some 1" inner diameter by 1 and 7/8" outer diameter sealed ( tapered ) roller bearings at Tractor Supply Co. for just under $13.00 a piece. tapered roller bearings are good for both radial and axial loads.

  • @SimonFortney thank you for this info

  • Is it worth using Neodymium Magnets (i.e. Mag Lev) for less friction?

  • Where did you get the parts for the axle, if you don't mind me asking.

  • The axle is one inch bar stock. I had some laying around but you could find some at a steel supply company. I found most of my parts (bearings, flanges) at Tractor Supply Co. its a chain of farm supply stores in Michigan. ( They also have bar stock) Try finding them online. Its no problem ask away.

  • Thank you. I'll chek out my local farm supply store tomorrow. If you're still looking for an motor I've seen a lot of people using old treadmill motor's because of the allready Permanent Magnet. I've had no luck finding any close to home though.

  • How bout a belt drive to an old car alternator charging a car battery with a converter to AC? Should be fairly cheap and good enough for testing how much work it will produce.

  • Awesome design! This windmill should generate lots of power!

  • nice. the end sections remind me of a chinese star. cool looking design

  • awsome job on that.

  • Thanks I'm in the process of welding the tower and rebuilding a small 20/1 worm gear transmission. I'm trying to locate a DC motor to use for the generator but everything Ive found is out of my price range. I was thinking about replacing the armature in a GM alternator but its still too pricey.

  • You can get a good one at windbluepower(dot)com for 239$. Thats the one I have one mine. Just check out the site. You can but it piece by piece. You can get the whole thing for 239 or just the rotar for rotar for 114$ stator for 59$ and housing for 22$. The one I have works great.

  • I've checked them out before. How much torque is required to turn a permanent magnet alternator under load? I'm not planning on using a battery bank I intend to grid tie with a rectifier and a UL listed power inverter. I was looking at the DC-520 or 540 models. With my 1:20 gear box I can get about 1200 rpm in a 10 mph wind. Think its a good fit?

  • That is an extraordinary design... if i could have plans to this creation let me know.... stellar turbine though..... its the cats a**!!!
