  • i lose my shit everytime i watch this..

  • Hmm..i'm glad that Jim found his parents, i was surprize that his dad walked right by him like he were someone else kid, but his mom reconzie him after 4 yrs being apart from each. I wonder now what he'll do now since now the war is over...will he keep his name "Jim" or go back to "Jaime"? well guess he's happy to be with his parents again..now he can rest & move on with his life in peace.

  • This is still heartbreaking.

  • Omg finally Academy! Christian Bale won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for The Fighter in 2011! He's deserved an Oscar since this film!!

  • MrCangoods2

My heart goes out to you! :,(

  • People are more important than things.

  • The suitcase represents baggage of the past. In this case dispensing with childhood and being an adult. In Jamie's case he grew up, but not in a good way as he wanted his parents to do that. As an Australian, we don't want to be taught by our enemies, but our own people. Hence the final scene. It is very heart wealming!

  • Never Fails To Make Me Cry!!

  • So. Many. Onions

  • Yes the end scene was the highlight of the movie,

  • Party hard Shanghai... you're about to get a rude awakening in about four years time.

  • ITS BATMAN!!

  • This movie always makes me cry.

  • i cried at this part the first two times i saw this movie....like forreal..it emotioanlly got me...i literally was pouring..but not like sobbing...i wasnt trying to make noise lol xD..but yea i needed a tissue or something lol..

  • @PhalangitePower it does get ya a bit when his mum see's him

  • @bozymark exactly. and tht FRIKEN MUSIC DOESNT HELP lol.

  • whats wrong with Holly wood ? Jews

  • Notice how shit bag Hollywood for sake of Film Time... make a huge deal of the find one kid and the rest is Drivel tape splices laying on the floor this is why Hollywood SUX and is a Pc of Crap! worthless ShXT, Why I hate thei Shitty attitude

  • He went on to be a cowboy, they don't use suitcases

  • Every time I watch this scene I well up.

  • Great scene.

  • The Academy was SOOOO stupid for not giving this FANTASTIC MOVIE at least ONE OSCAR!!!

  • How did he not get an Oscar for this movie??????

  • batman

  • :C

  • This movie breaks my heart every time I watch it.

  • Christian Bale...nice body of work..

  • Saddest part for me is when he touches his mum as a way of being able to remember her.....we have no comprehension over what horrors he must have seen to have lost memory of his parents!

  • and the joker would later murder Bruce Wayne's parents

  • I cry everytime i see this movie!

  • Besides this song here..I would of heard John Williams score here. I wonder what beautiful delicate piano music John would of placed here....

  • This breaks my heart. But it is beautiful.

  • 1:45 is where I always start to cry.

  • @Jonipoon I can't make it past 2:35 without getting seriously misty eyed

  • for God's sake,dont press dislike!

  • One of the best movies ever! Spielberg at his best....this last scene always brings a tear to my eye...

  • This scene and the ending of SAVING PRIVATE RYAN get me EVERY TIME and i've watched each over forty times. This in my opinion is the most UNDER RATED EPIC DRAMA IN THE PAST 30 YEARS!!

  • i cry everytime i watch this movie...and i dont even cry over someones death in real life.

  • I was touched by this scene. I really, really love this movie.

  • What did the suitcase at the end represent again? Love this movie, but forgot a lot of it!!

  • @808ac it represents the old life of Jamie, his childhood and innocence. In a previous scene we see Jamie throwing his suitcase in the river and we know he's just chosen to leave his old life behind.

  • @MayasMoviebox Also true. I think Spielberg himself says that in an interview, as I think does J.G. Ballard in an interview done after the movie. In fact, both may be on the mini-documentary "Empire of the Sun: A China Odyssey" that ran on network TV when the movie came out, and I think forms one of the DVD extras on some releases.

  • @808ac Try to remember first scene from this film - coffins on the river, pushing by the boats. In a manner of speaking, this suitcase is like one of this coffins. "Jaime" buried "Jim" in this suitcase.

  • This scene always brings tears to my eyes. It's so powerful. It's so perfect! And then you hear Exultate Justi and see Spielberg's name! PERFECT!

  • @oberstul YES. Couldn't have said it better myself. Much of this movie is...magic.

  • Actually...Yes CHRISTIAN BALE DID SING THIS SONG WITH THE CHOIR he also sang in the plane scene...make no mistake you can hear his lisp. Originally he wasn't going to but Steven thought it would work and it did!

  • @stratmandar sorry to contradict you, but that's not true. Christian Bale sang himself only in "Newsies".

  • @MayasMoviebox Exactly. Chris Bale didn't sing any of the songs in this film - Rainbird did them all. Even if Chris's voice had been up to snuff...it's just not the way they do things.

  • @MayasMoviebox No...he sang in the scene and they overdubbed with the chior but standing at the fence he is singing.

  • @stratmandar not true. sorry :/

  • @PhalangitePower James rabaird sang with the chior but standing at the fence was Bale singing!

  • @stratmandar standing at the fence was Bales lips moving. It was not him singing. It is believable that it would be him singing but it isnt.

  • damn Americans always at war you have to put long life miserable ¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡ lemperador ¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡ banzai

  • @MrMarccccccc Que cosa? No speako burrito chinga tortillas

  • Sorry dad you're kinda out of the loop here XD

  • This movie seems to be of the "love it or hate it" type. Some have criticised it for lack of historical accuracy (such as the ability to see the atomic flash in China), but these criticisms are ridiculous. It never claimed to be a documentary, it's a FILM! The biggest criticism is that it was too long and meandering, perhaps it would have benefited from tighter editing. But, the power of scenes such as this one, and the performance of Bale make it a great film.

  • Only people who were suddenly be separated from their parent can understand this terrible scene…

  • when he touches his mother's lips and her hair i always tear up, no matter how often i watch it.

  • THIS IS ONE OF MY FAVORITE. I WANT TO KNOW MORE ABOUT THE REAL WAR AND JAIME. IF YOU KNOW WHERE I SEARCH MORE INFORMATION I WILL APRECIATE. THANKS

  • When he touches her hair... It gets to me every time.

  • Esse filme é muuuuuito bom.

Foi o filme que mais me marcou.

  • don't get too happy over your parents kid, theyr gonna get shot and you're gonna grow up to become Batman

  • @HelterSkelterSOR you're getting confused between Batman and Empire of the Sun, they're too different movies

  • @ClickKopf -.-

  • @HelterSkelterSOR just kidding ;)

  • @ClickKopf lol

  • After 20 years, I STILL get the sniffles from this scene lol

  • I haven't seen the film in ages and this scene brought a tear to my eye. More than a few. So heartwrenching.

  • fantastic singing. Never knew this is the guy from Batman...brilliant acting!

  • P E L I C U L O N

  • best movie

  • Christian Bale really sang that song right? This scene always makes me cry

  • @4everhis7 no, the Welsh song "Suo Gân" was performed by James Rainbird and the Ambrosian Junior Choir. Christian Bale just lip-synched it. If you want to hear Christian singing, you should watch the musical "Newsies!" :)

  • @MayasMoviebox Thanks!

  • @4everhis7 No he did not. There are other videos on here with the actual name of the choir. I think they are from Australia. It makes me cry every time too. When he closes his eyes...BRILLIANT. Best bit of acting I have ever seen. And no words. So slight and so small a gesture...that speak volumes. "I am home".

  • HOW CRISTIAN BALE DID NOT WIN THE OSCAR FOR THIS MOVIE IS BEYOND ME!!! ONE OF THEE BEST ACTING PERFORMANCES OF ALL TIME!!

  • @wcbombers21 Well said!

  • @wcbombers21 all time? lol, good acting but not close.

  • @wcbombers21 I agree with you 100% This specific part is the most heart wrenching, beautiful scenes I've ever encountered.

  • @wcbombers21 CUZ he was NOT nominated. Blame ur Oscar Friends..of why they didn't nominate him. HE IS in every scene!!! IT IS a beautiful performance.....

  • He never blinks, to blink was to die, only when he found his home, was he able to close his eyes and try to forget all that was before him.

  • great movie great music, what more has to be said!

  • Uma cena memorável: pela fé e esperança, o reencontro do amor!! Na verdade, eu nunca me esqueci deste filme!!

  • Film maravilloso en todo los sentidos felicitaciones a Steven Spielberg

  • I have watched this scene i Dont kNow How many time and I alway Always cry!

  • @MeekWest6 me too, everytime

  • i cried when i watched jamie/jim hug his mother

imagine if that happen to us :''(

  • Of course his dad goes right past him...

  • To bad Spielberg has become a hollywood liberal and has turned his back on the Jewish state......................

  • Tear jercker: Mr. Bale!

  • This is one of the few movies that has ever gotten me emotional.....it is magnificent and beautiful in every way, and Christian Bale gave a powerful, magnificent turn in the lead role as Jim Graham. The Oscars really screwed up by not even giving him a nomination which he greatly deserved. This movie is certainly among the greatest character-dramas of all time! Few movies (such as The Shawshank Redemption) have ever been close to the same level of greatness that Spielberg brought to EOTS!!!!

  • man you can really see the intensity in his eyes! they're like dead and devoid of all innocence after that experience. completely different from when he was still just a schoolboy. spielberg and bale managed to convey the message in the end so clearly. XD and to that i say: "bravo!"

  • can't stop my tears from fallin everytime i watch this scene....

  • The dad is John malkovich

  • @videofreakmanic123: no, the dad is Rupert Frazer. John Malkovich played his American "friend" Basie.

  • I cried.

  • @9torresfan9 I did too and I'm 40!

  • Why does the father look so much like Keanu Reeves?!

  • why no John Lennon singing Imagine,at the end of 'the Kiling Fields'...so sad when you know the Cambodian man who played the lead, who genuinely did go thru whats depicted in the film, escapes Cambodia and gets murdered in his home in LA by a burgler,I cry everytime I see that film.

  • This scene always makes me cry.. :,)

    Amazing movie.

  • This scene still chokes me up, even when he was 13 Christian Bale was the man.

  • @runningactor08 even when christian bale was 13 he was the man :)

  • mother knows best!!!! this scene made me cry!!!! best movie of all time!!

  • So... the Japanese were the Aliens ? :D

  • How's the father so stoic? I would probably hug my child and cry if I were him

  • with all he´s been through, he´s a bit cracked, ain´t he?

  • It sad his farther didn't know who he was and at 2:41 he could finaly let go and act like a kid

  • It sad his farther didn't know who he was and at 2:41 he could finaly let go

  • it sad that his farter didn't know who he was

  • el final de esta película es uno de los más tristes que he visto en mi vida, y eso que acaba bien!! y la mirada del niño cuando está abrazando a la madre te rompe el alma!!

  • this movie ending always make me cry

    and i dont cry easy

  • Incredible touching movie...this last scene touches the heart....deeply...

  • i cried in this scene

  • @KiwiTomCrawford SO AM I so am I! memories fading

  • saw this in theatres in 1987, cried then, at 1:50 it fucking kills me to see this.

  • FANTASTIC!!!!!...BRAVOOOO!!!!

  • that's some acting there by Emily Richard at 1:45. just the way she stops is so believable.

  • I haven't seen my mom due to work overseas for over a year and I miss her :(

  • I cry every time I see this scene. it is amazing

  • The most powerful moments in war-related movies always involve children. Just watch movies like Come and See,Germany Year Zero and Grave of the Fireflies.

  • This ending scene always tears me up. And I'm a guy.

  • Christian should have never grew up :)

  • Thank you for the HD. Anything less than HD wouldn't have given this beautiful film its justice. Brilliant and powerful scene.

  • Powerfully moving scene. I can't believe his father remained so stoic after seeing his son's condition; the boys physical appearance clearly reflects the horrors he endured. Christian Bale was/is truely a gifted actor, even at a very young age. He gave an Oscar worthy performance in this incrediable film.

  • great movie. based on an average book.

  • I wished John Williams had written a piece of music here and not Suo Gan..I understand why Spielberg placed the song..but I think Williams could of had placed a beautiful uplifting piece of music here.

  • Oh that just made me cry, he founally found peace again. Love the song to my granny and I sang it and talked about it much so thank you for the clip, sorry to tell that my granny is dead by now but if she still was here I would have shown her this

  • This is how I imagine entering heaven and reuniting with my own parents will be like.

  • tears !

  • What a complicated expression of little Jamie, to believe peace finally come, bad time ended.

I am a Chinese, in reality I don't think China have ever been peace after WWII. There was honor defending home country, but now is ashame the totalitarianism government limiting people's freedom.

  • @hin003 stay safe.

  • Good flick...I wonder if any knows if that is really Christian Bale singing?

  • @boanerges144 : no, the Welsh song "Suo Gân" was performed by James Rainbird and the Ambrosian Junior Choir. Christian Bale just lip-synched it. If you want to hear Christian singing, you should watch the musical "Newsies!" :)

  • @MayasMoviebox That you very much for responding, appreciate the info, I will check out the "Newsies"

  • man what a great movie. Trully a classic from the go0d old Spielberg days before he started turning everythign into shit.

  • @aranax69: I must sadly agree. Since "Munich" Spielberg hasn't done a movie that's worth seeing. And now he's going to release that silly Tin Tin franchise... I wonder why he's wasting his talent that way. I'm saying this because I adore his older filmography and I'm sure he could still be the best (or one of the best).

  • @MayasMoviebox Yep exactly my thoughts.

  • @MayasMoviebox Since Munich he's only released one pile of crap.

  • @MayasMoviebox "Silly" Tin Tin franchise? Bite your tongue! You know not of what you speak!!

  • Comment removed

  • @Tsgarlin: I perfectly know what I'm talking about. When I was a child I liked watching Tin Tin cartoons on tv, nevertheless I think Spielberg shouldn't waste his talent with comic-based movies. He's not young anymore and he should try to end his career with something worth to remember. I know he still can do it.

  • @MayasMoviebox Tintin did not start as a cartoon. Tintin is a Belgian series of graphic novels that defined comic books throughout the world for its style and story telling. Lots of people who study to become comic book illustrators and writers study it. Because the original Tintin is in French it was never quite appreciated in the English World. If anyone can make Tintin big in English. Spielberg's that dude. So yeah I doubt you know what you're talking about.

  • @MayasMoviebox it doesn't really matter if it's a childs comic or not, if its done by a good directer, it can become an amazing movie. It also doesn't matter that he isn't young anymore. Like the words of stephan king, "i have the heart of a child...its in a jar on my desk." I've seen childrens comics turned into amazing movies, so don't complain until you actually see the movie.

  • @HatterMRULEZ, i have to agree that id rather see him touch on deeper subjects as this.. wtf is tin tin anyway ;x

  • @MayasMoviebox should? he is Spielberg, you are? Ever thought he might know better?..

  • @aranax69 This really was a great movie, but what about the first 3 Indiana Jones films, those were great until he collaborated with George Lucas. . . bleh

  • @aranax69 can't really say that about schindlers list... that movie was pretty good

  • Mon film préféré sans aucun doute :) ; My favourite film, no doubt about it :), beautiful songs and scenes, an amazing ending...Mr Spielberg thanks a lot ^^ ==> from a french frog :D

  • I first saw this movie a few days ago. I was sure his parents had died in the explosion. This has to be one of the happiest endings of any movie ever.

  • I need to return some video tapes

  • @mediblue9: LOL! :D

  • this is christian bales finest hour in my opinion all the cast were excellent but bales stole the show he was an excellent actor for one so young, and malcovich was excellent as the selfish older friend.

  • I cried the first time I saw this. Very underrated movie. Bale gave a glimpse into his genius.

  • Children should never have to Participative in the horrors of War

  • f*ckin perfect!

  • i remember being so scared his parents were not going to see him, and just leave without him. guuuh that would have been horrible.

  • This scene gets me so choked up.

  • I firmly believe that what gives the magic to spiellberg's movies is john williams music

  • Christian Bale should, should have gought Best Actor for this role.

  • @peppertee Agree... Bale's acting was phenomenal.

  • this makes me wanna cry so badly

  • poor daddy was ignored and didn't get a hug :(

  • Emily Richard's timing of her stop dead freeze, facial expressions, movements and deep breathing make this scence what it is... wonderful acting...
