Hi Kelly,I wonder if you can help me find a song sung by Ronnie Drew. Its about a crofter whos wife has died and left him with a small daughter,at the end of each verse he sings "but its all over now and Im easy"I had this song once on an LP but lost it when I moved house and Ive been trying to trace it ever since.By the way, many thanks for the videos and songs on You Tube, they are brilliant.
'Now I'm Easy' is a song written and sung best by the folk singer Eric Bogle, born in the Scottish Border country - went to Peebles High school - who emigrated to Australia when he was still young. It's about an old farmer he met in the outback who had lost just about everything and come to terms with his life now that he doesn't have long to go. Eric also wrote 'The Band Played Waltzing Matilda' and the wonderful anti-war song best known as 'The Green Fields of France'
i have the LP as well a,d agree with Nelly Pringle onlyLuke could sing this song which is normally sung by a woman. He had a superb voice and the sound of him singing this is so poignant a wonderful voice,a lovely man and a great, great group
back again.....I just can't believe the emotion created in me by this song that I don't understand/. Very different but similar to hearing Nessun Dorma. Luke you left too soon.
I remember a magical moment - walking my dogs near Glanmore Lake on the beautiful, breathtaking Beara Peninsula. On an empty road I could hear music, and when I eventually got to the source - a cottage in the middle of nowhere - the song playing was this - Dainty Davey by the immortal Luke Kelly. I loved the West of Ireland and all the experiences of a couple of holidays there, but this one stands out as the best.
Best version of the song I 've come across, but the verses cleaned up for polite English/ American audiences. A true story - the rebel was hidden in the girl's bed by her mother. She got pregnant. The lad came back after the wars and married her.
But the original is much funnier - with the words -' twas there I won atween her knees and splash gaed oot my gravy.
Absolutely transfixed. He is a One Off. I saw him and the Dubliners live in Toronto and it struck me that he had about 5 or 6 tinwhistles in his shirt pocket. I can't remember the name of the pub but it was on Yonge street just south of Bloor W. It was a venue for a lot of the Irish Artists as well, of course, as was Jimmy McVeighs. the Leaping Leprechaun, himself.
Lukes is my favourite version of this great song, by far. the Fureys do a good version too although faster, worth a listen ,also the Ian Campbell folk group do a gentler version. good stuff. love your site. As you can tell this is one of my favourite songs.
This is a great version of a great song but I urge you to listen to two other very different & in my opinion almost as good versions,I may sometimes even [sacrilage indeed] prefer the Fureys version, the other good recording & in my opinion worth a listen is by the great Ian Campbell folk group.
great song from one of the best singers ever, its a close first place between him ,ronnie , and pecker dunne, but there are some songs just suited to luke that nobody could match
Just listened to this again and reviewed my comments of four months ago. I don't know where my head was, that which I don't understand does not detract from the shear magic of Luke. Just listen to his fabulous delivery!
This is from a superb LP called 'At Home With the Dubliners', made around 1969, I think. Luke's performance is absolutely beguiling: how many big hairy men can get away with singing romantically from a woman's point of view? His voice is beautiful.
What an an engaging, almost mystical man Luke was. This song gets me every time - and I'm not even that sure why. "Authenticity" is the only word that comes easily to mind
luke kelly ...very special!some come around more than once and in no time at all.these phrasings remind me of how fluid and changeable language is and so much more than a string of words to be divided about.
i think that goes for all languages.and dd must surely have been IT for her!
Brings back memories of my youth in Kerry in 80`s and 90`s. Every pub would be belting out these songs... seems a lifetime ago. Cheers for posting this.
Curly Pow, As written by Burns has a different meaning, getting a girl pregnant, leeze me on your curly pow, lay your head on my [use your imagination]as to what is curly.
Beautiful performance from the greatest Folk singer ever to live. LUKE KELLY
twas re written by Euan MacColl, however the original version by Burns which I happen to posess has no chorus! The chorus was an addition by MacColl to my understanding. The first Banjo I ever got was given to me by Luke Kelly, never did learn how to play very well, I still just look at it. There were hundreds of songs Luke sang that were never published, someday maybe someone will get round to it.Twould bring a tear to a glass eye!
Apparently a true story. In the late 17th Century the Rev Davey Williamson, a preacher, was on the run from the dragoons for preaching blasphemy. He hid in the house of Lady Cherrytrees, who hid him in her daughter's bed. The daughter ended up pregnant !!!! However, Davey did the honourable thing and married her.
This was written by Robert burns and as an Australian I can't understand many of the words, but I love it and find it one of those songs that I find myself singing all the time. here sung by the best ever.
Great song, great singer. Along with "The Spanish Lady", it seems as if everyone records this song well.Does anyone know what the words are to the chorus?

Ich find ihn einfach geil, so wahnsinnig geil. Ich zähl´ jetzt nicht auf, was alles....
I have to write it in German because my thoughts are German and "great" is not the absolute appropriate word and "God" isn´t it also.
