You could feed a villiage with food, not money. Technically, buying luxury items that aren't produced in a way that exploits out-of-country labour bolsters the economy of the country in which it was produced and bought, making the countriy's money more valuble and food less expensive to give to starving people. So if you research the clothes you buy and purchase stuff that's made with in-country materials and labour, you're a part of the solution.

True to a degree, but that sort of thinking eventually leads to an economy entirely based on useless crap and there is a certain point where such an economy falls apart. money is just paper if it doesn't represent something of practical value. If all of our jobs are based on pleasure or politics or manipulating the system instead of actual productive jobs, then we aren't producing value and the machine will run out of fuel
