  • very high quality

  • First of all, this is awesome.

Second of all, say I want to download Blender for Windows. There's two options- 32 bits and 64 bits- which is better, and what's the difference? Thank you!

  • @starlite319 Great question. Simple answer is use what fits your operating system. The terms 32-bit and 64-bit refer to the way a computer's processor (also called a CPU), handles information. The 64-bit version of Windows handles large amounts of random access memory (RAM) more effectively than a 32-bit system.

  • @starlite319

Open System by clicking the Start button , right-clicking Computer, and then clicking Properties.

Under System, you can view the system type.

If your computer is running Windows XP, do the following:

    Click Start.

Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.

If you don't see "x64 Edition" listed, then you're running the 32-bit version of Windows XP.

If "x64 Edition" is listed under System, you're running the 64-bit version of Windows XP.

  • @dipingo Got it. Thanks!

  • Thats nice work for a 10min vid. No Umming and Arring, which was refreshing to hear in a Blender tutorial. Im new to this program but cant get enough of the Sculpting. Are there any tips you can throw at a fresh noob. Is it better to start with a Cube or UVSphere? How do you cut the holes? How do you start a line by line Mesh? And - My Blender crashes with a 'Not responding' when i try to unwrap the mesh, is that because i have too many faces (190,000ish), or am i just doing it wrong? :)

  • @Simwillb Please visit my site I do live classes bt request and would help you with any issues. We love the newwbies. Blenducation org. see you there. BTW ALLWAYs start sculpting with a good base mesh. No a cube. unwrrap it anytime. I unwrapp before I add multi res just because there are fewer face and I can cut seems esier.

  • This mesh looks very bad...

  • @Insideviewanimator Well, it isn't about the mesh. But I did look at your channel and I would recommend you check out my free head mesh. It will help you with topology. youtube -> BlenducationTube grab the tiny URL.

  • can anyone tell me how to get the pink dots and the hair editable on 2.57?

  • At only 240p, I cant see what you're clicking on.

  • when i modeled the mesh for the head i did half of it, duplicated it and then reverse scaled it by one. this resulted in the faces being 'upside down' and the hair grows out the wrong side ( the inside) for half the head, is there any way i can fix this?

  • @TheYahmez Well, I would have modeled it using the mirror modifier, then I would apply that mirror modifier and added the hair. But to fix your issue, select the half of the head that is adding the hair on the inside (in edit mode) , then hit the W-key and FLIP NORMALS. Any particle system will follow the normals and because you are working with a "mirrored copy" your normals are flip wrong. To see the normals in 2.5x look under Mesh display>Normals> check the little box next to FACE.

  • i maid my character using a blue print and the mirror function. when ever i try to mak hair grow it only shows up on the mirrored side :/ i tried copying the side i did and joining it t the main bode but the hair started to grow on the inside of the mesh. can any one help me?

  • @YokoLink you need to first apply all your modifiers, then add the particle system as I did in the video. Other wise Blender doesn't see the copy (mirrored) side.

  • @dipingo how do i "apply" the mods? *i just got done making another head out of a full circle =_="*

  • @YokoLink Never hake a head from a circle, shame on you. Go to Blenducationdot org and work on the tuts lined up under the fast track. or watch get-started part 1.

  • I will make a new one for version 2.5 if ppl want it. I am now working on a series for the new Blender 2.5 for new users. Cover some great stuff. hope you will all check it out.

  • When i render that i can't see the head, only the hair.

    Can you help me?

  • @rasPutiNERO0 Under the Physics (F7 press and the particle button pressed on the header) You there yet? Ok, now under the Visualization Panel> click on Emitter under Render: See 5:17 of the video.

If you added a material you would also tell Blender to render that too.

  • when its random it looks like one of the guys from slipknot XD

  • hey is it possible to use particel hair for a pony tail?

  • @1ard I wouldn't use it for that. I would model the tail and rig it. I looked at your work and a toonish tail would be better as a mesh.

  • @dipingo crap XD oh well :P lol i have been looking for an excuse to use particel hair XD oh well ty :P no i know what toi draw for my bluebrints

  • @dipingo oh XD and iam actuely useing the ponytail thing for a more detailed and realisting model :P would it work for tht ? or should i still model the hair? :P

  • @1ard I would probably model it any way. Blender hair is ... well great for fur:) But give it a try and let me know.

  • @dipingo XD lol oh i probly would try iot XD but iam just woundering if u can comb the hair back into a little hair bow XD and make it look like a pony tail :P but ill probly go with modeling it

  • how do i change the hair color and make it stiff

  • ong when he first aplled the hair to tw hole head it looked so muck like craig from slipkbot

  • Thank you so much for this tutorial i've been looking for something like it coz most of my characters are bald lol!!

  • @akahans I am making a new series on "Working in 2.5" Hair will be covered. But most important will be the fact that users will learn professional skills needed to get a real job using Blender.

  • great tutorial...

for hair tutorials visit the channel: imdvirus

  • @atrieton Is that Maya? You should mention that here before directing people there. Most ppl here are using Blender and I would not want them wasting time trying to follow a Maya tut.

  • How come i only get 1 segment? I have 5 segments turned on..

  • @neverhoodyn In edit mode on the head mesh select vertice mode (Control + Tab and select "vertice" not edge) Then get over to Blenducation(DOT)org and sign up for the free on-line classes!!!

  • When I put on the Weight Mode and I try to select the area where I want to make hair grow it appears the message "Operations only available for multires level 1" and not allowing me to continue with it...what does it mean?:(

  • @TheMothsoul When you made the Head you turned on Multires, Bender needs to know the faces are real. You must Apply the Multi res in order to add hair. You can also go to Blenducation and get a very cool Head for free!

That is a direct link to the Mesh head.

  • @dipingo The link will be much helpful, thanks! But...anyway...xD I still don't understand where do I find the "button" to activate the multi res? Sorry but I've been using this program just for a week so...thanks anyway

  • @TheMothsoul Apply Multi res by selecting the object and hitting F9. It is the Multi res panel. 3rd panel from the Left in your buttons window. Make sure it says "ADD Multires" Not "apply Multi res". If it says "Apply Multi Res" click that button.

  • When im using the game engine in blender, how do i get the hair to appear when its playing?

  • @sexykeenan I wouldn't advice using this method for hair in the BGE I would do a mesh for hair.

  • Thank you!

  • the hair didnt pop up and it says the particle system only works on multire level 1

  • @dontskipthischannel Try applying the your multi res. Blender needs to know the actual faces to push the particles from. Multi res is not "real" yet. Also make sure you don't have modifiers on, IE mirror, subdivide or Edge split.

  • kk i solved the problem with the hair via another easier tut but i still dnt kno how to add hair color to my character

  • i need help i can get hair on mi head but then when i go to weight mode at first it would be black so i would have to press the painting mask and it would go blue i would paint it and then when i pressed group to make hair in only 1 place it didnt work so i canceled the project and tried the same thing in a fresh new uv sphere it still didnt wrk i need help

  • wow, great video, this really helped me, thank you very much!!!

  • Great tutorial! Very good explanation and not too much details. Thanks loads

  • i cant get the pink dots. i use 2.49. the only thing i got was yellow not dots but the hair turned yellow is that rite :( help

  • You're awesome at tutorials!

  • hey i'm unable to see it with the pink dots how do i fix that

  • @btymciw

Hit Tab to go to Object Mode, or select it from the menu.

  • when i render it the face goes away and the hair stays

  • you need to go to particle properties and under Visualisation click the Emitter button

  • When I animate the hair it goes through my model how do I fix it

  • My version (2.44) does not have the same buttons, for example, when i select the particles button and add new, nothing happens, it does not let me write the name for the particle.

I have to mention I allready had a sculpted head, i am in edit mode. but...nothing.

  • @osmodivs Under Physics, increase the normal. The hair particles should grow. Also 2.44 you may need to apply your modifiers. Especially the mirror modifier or you will only get hair on one side of the object.

  • @dipingo I was wondering why these tutorials look nothing like I'm seeing in these other videos? ...

  • can some one help

  • i cant comb it

  • @450yum I think it starts around 4:04 in the video. You must set the hair as editable.

  • @dipingo thank you

  • I have a problem. When I try to click the normal property to add the hair, nothing happens. Why? Thanks!

  • what you mean? the button don't work or particles don't appear?

if the problems is that particles don't appear, try entering the Object Mode

particles are not shown in Edit Mode

    :)

  • Okay, I'll try it, thanks. I was in particle mode, however... so ? Oh well. Let's see if it works! :D By the way, could it be because I used the sculpt mode on it with multires? It's a sort of detailed decent head, my second decent model, and I want hair on it! :D Thanks.

  • @thedippytheory

you have to do a new vertex group

  • thats some Creepy head.....wth is that?

  • Great teacher!

    thanks dude

  • This was an awesome tutorial, and it REALLY helped me! I had no idea how to assign hair to a specified area, which was angering because I am making a deinonychus (a type of raptor), and they only had feathers on some of their body. This helped me finish it correctly, thank you!

  • How about posting a clip here? I would love to see it.

  • Unfortunately, I am unable to animate anything at this point, I am a novice, and don't fully understand how to yet. I have some still renders of it, but it isn't that good. The shape is perfect, and looks exactly like what a deinonychus would look like, but the materials and textures need work to make it really come to life. Thanks for showing intrest though.

  • I came here for same reason! :D.

  • you can use a plane mesh. Just do a simple subdivide and then you just model it like coath and then buala!

  • good tut. TY for upload it :)

  • I really like that head mesh, do you thing you could give me a copy of it? thanks!

  • Dipingo,

Thank you for the tutorial. I have a problem, maybe you can give me some advice: I built a model by mirroring half of the body and when I try to give it hair, it only shows on the mirrored side and it is uneditable (can't comb, etc). Any idead of why that may be?

    Thank you for your consideration.

    Razolio

  • You have what seems to be 2 different problems:

1.You need to apply the mirror modifier before you add the hair.

2.Then check out the video at 4:03 when I go into editing. You must set the particles to edit to comb.

  • Thank you, Dipingo,

You were correct on both issues. Much appreciated.

    R

  • Alright,

I have another issue if you have a moment: I have applied the mirror modf. before I added the hair. Now it shows on the left side of the head; in order to have it show on the entire head I went to "Modifiers", I hit "convert" under the Particle System 1, and then I added another mirror and there is a full head of hair... but it only renders the left side of the head... ahhhh... help?

    Thank you.

  • oh dude thank you so much i already knew how to make hair, but i wanted to know where to put the hair exactly and stuff and i found your way the most best so far

    great job :) <3 thanks

  • wow cool , thx :)

    all the best from germany

  • Hey can you make a video and tell me how to make a head like that :)

  • How do you put holes in a mesh like that? Select faces and delete them?

  • Yes, Just use the X key to delete them.

  • Thanks, it's really useful tutorial and really easy to understand. :)

  • Is there a way you can style the hair?

  • yeah Go on "Particle mode" and press N :)

  • Comment removed

  • very good toturial, thx alot

  • Thanks for this. I was hoping to to find something to help me understand

Sorry for the last comment it was meant for another video :p

  • Comment removed

  • Hi your video helped me a lot its great 100% 5* and I got everything did and it worked lol I just need help in one thing My head is mirrored so when I do all of this it only happens in one side of the head, what can I do to fix this?

  • I removed a Comment asking about how to make the hair strands editable. Sorry about that.

Once in edit just click on the small icon called point select mode. it is like edge select, face select and vert select in edit mode.

  • how u change the color of the hair but not the object, I added a material but that didnt work

  • You must select that material as the particle material.

  • Can i use these hair in game?

  • I don't think particles work the same in the BGE.

  • they dont work at all in the bge

  • Hey, is it possible to have hair affected by wind in blender?

  • Yes. Wind is part of the physics. You can also use wind to effect cloth.

  • Ahh thanks man, a lot of help really.

  • You should come by Blenducation. Live Classes online.

    Most are free.

  • Yeah sure dude no problem, I' ve been there several times. Right now I'm just combining all the knowledge I have aquired from tutorials, to put them all together.

  • sweet now I can make a nude asian chick!!! ahahha

  • okay, I have the hair, but when I make the group, it will not do anything, I made sure it selected the vertex group, but the hair isn't going to it

  • hey thanks man this realy helped me

  • when i put up the normal right at the start nothing happens and yep im in particle mode

  • can some one help me? I can't get the hair to stay on the mesh and what do I need to do to keep the hair as is after I finished combing it?

  • the hair comes out only on one side of my mesh and when I hit the groups it doesn't do any thing? help me plz

  • Hey can you make that head available to me? thanks!

  • whenever i try i can see the hair through the head of the guy

  • Very close Jonny, the problem is that Blender can not deal with the multi res. Button try applying the multires. then adding the hair.

  • when i try and render the hair comes up with error saying Particles only supported on first multires level.. can anyone help

  • I am not a hundred percent sure, but i think that when you add a new multire level, it takes away the possibility of doing some other things. In other words, you changed your multires and now cannot do this.

  • @BuzzSaw11:

There is a very easy way to do that. First, select the model you want to be solid and not have the hair fall through it. Next, press F7 until you get to "Physics buttons," and on the very left you should see fields. In that box, select Collisions, then add Collision to it. You don't have to edit the options, but you can fiddle around with it and find something.

  • hey, im still learing blender... can u send me that skull mesh? And if you cant, can u give me some pointers? I know you probably get people aking you this all the time, but any help would be so appreciated.. thanks.. Contact me.. bye :)

  • The hair move at begin, but after it don't move when the head rotate, but why ? Normously the hair should stay down on Z axis

  • Is there a way not to get the hair to fall into your model making those bald spots? Well, I'm sure there is a way but how would one do it?

  • If you render that, won't the head disappear and only show the hair? When I try to set an object to have hair particles only the particles render, and the object that is emitting the hair will not render. What am I missing?

  • Look for the Visualization tab, there you'll find a section called Render. Make sure that the Emitter button is pressed. Should solve your problem.

  • 5:18 on the video.

Make sure you have emitter selected to inform Blender you want the emitter to render.

  • Hi, I like your tutorial. I'm having an issue. I set up my key frames, bake the hair, and when I Alt-A or render. The mesh moves and the hair stays still. My character walks right out of her hair. :/

Hope that I explained my problem well. This is driving me nuts. I've watched your video several times. I don't know what I'm doing differently than you.

    Thanks.

    Oh, 2.48a if it matters.

  • I'm not expert, but have you turned off the goal in the hair's soft body? When I do this the hair just falls off the head onto the ground. Sounds similar to your problem.

  • It turns out that the Armature modifier needed to be above the Particle System modifier in the Modifier Stack (F9).

But, thanks for trying to help out.

  • having trouble rendering the hair.. none of the hair shows up for some reason

  • i added the fire material dont ask me how my friend did it and now it looks like ghost rider

  • Your voice makes me want to sleep. Thanks for the great tutorial, I have referred to it several times.

  • I speak that way because my kids were sleeping. Sorry if I was a bit to soothing. LOL

  • Thanks for the great tutorial.

Can anyobody tell me how I keep the hair from sinking into the head?

    Thanks

  • Go to Object (F7), and then go to physics. Look around in their and you will find a collision button, turn that on, and play with it.

You do not need to turn on softbodies, I'm not talking about the softbodies collision, but there is a separate collision button you will see.

  • Great Tutorial!

  • nice tutorial but i dont evn know ho to make a sphere in blender

  • if you don't even know how to make a sphere, why are you already trying to make hair? lol

  • lol you add a speer buy hitting the space bar then scroling over add then over mesh then sphere

  • CAN I HAVE THAT MESH PLZ

  • good stuff, do you know how to do the game scripting, things like collission detection?

  • perfekt tutorial, 5*

  • TY Alanojugger

  • i have problem.when i render the image, the face became transparent, but i can see the hair.

  • hi. I need some help. i made a head and of course i wanted to add some hair, but it did not work! it stood that the particle system was just supporting level 1....something. on level1 is my head just a square!!!

    PLEASE help a noob/ Indianpojken

  • My guess is that when you made the "head" you used the "subsurf modifier". If this is true you need to shut off the particle system you made. Then apply the subsurf. Then make remake the particle system.

The reason is that Blender needs to know where to make th e particles come from. Subsurfing can mix blender up.

  • ysvry, thank you for signing up to see my video posts. Please go to my web site to see more.

  • great tut thx.

  • this face looks freaky >.>

  • how do you make the hair thicker

  • It is in the material set up...when you click strands you can increase the start and end thinknesses.

  • Or wait I figured it out I had to push the buttom set edit able :p

  • Great, sorry I didn't get here sooner. See I get a email every time some one comments on my videos and I try hard to get here ASAP to help out with any issues.

  • My model is made with a plane, could that be the problem?

  • I can't edit my hair at 4:10. It sais in the particle window system isn't editable. What shall I do?

  • thanks a lot for your toturial!

I've been searching for this for ages!

do you know any site where i can find a lot of toturials for 2.46? each one i check is a past version and the keys have changed

  • Yes! There is the Blender Wiki, and the Blender web site. But I also have my own site that has starter tutorials for any one that wants to learn the basics.

  • This was great tutorial!

How to make hair collides animated object?

    totaly AWESOME!

  • OOO MAN THE END BUTTEN IS NOT DOING ENY THING IS THERE A WAY TO FIND IT IN A OTHER WAY???

    YES I HAVE 2,46

    help pleas!!!!!

  • After I use the weight paint and the hair moves to those areas I don't see any vertices in the hair when in Particle mode. Is there a step I missed?

  • Paintrain8765...That seems to be the most asked question of all. :) What you want is "think we worked this out, but for anyone else that reads this post... In order to see the verts along the path of the hair you must be in "point select mode". It is the little button in the view port menu that looks like vert select in the edit menu."

  • Everytime when i applie softbody and press alt+a, the whole head keeps falling, and the material also applies to head and hair...

  • please check out the video...6:19. :)

An join my site, there I can communicate much easier and you can get answers much faster.

  • When I click set editable there is only 1 segment to each hair. I have 5 selected though. What could the problem be?

  • think we worked this out, but for anyone else that reads this post... In order to see the verts along the path of the hair you must be in "point select mode". It is the little button in the view port menu that looks like vert select in the edit menu.

  • Thanks! I must have missed that :(. Great Tutorial though. It helped me out a ton. I appreciate it.

  • hey thanx!!!!

  • No Problem. Now make a video saying how it worked for you to help others, OK?

  • ok thanks

  • i already did but its on my other profile, BlenderTutorials. so thx

  • the hair doesnt grow!!!!!!!!!!!

  • tutorial was great, this helped a lot. but every time i hit Alt+A, the hair just falls through the mesh instead of staying on top of the head, why does this happen?

  • Excellent tutorial thankyou

  • thx man i've been blending for 3 years and i cant even make hair

  • its ok

  • damn i dont even know ho to make a piece of straw

  • I get the hair evrywhere that i didnt weight paint

  • i fink i know ur problem augis you must ov clicked the neg button and added a vertex..make sure the neg button in extras is not selected..hope dis helps

  • fanx a lot for this very useful tutorial

hey i just cant seem to have the hair color different from the head...if u can help much appreciated

  • I just want to say thanks to all of you for checking out my tutorial, commenting and rating it. It validates my efforts.

Please, visit my site and sign up. I will post more videos there first. And because of file size, quality and communication, it will be the best place to learn more about Blender.

I will be adding more videos here and on Vimeo very soon. But my web site is updating all the time.

  • Great Tutorial! Simple questions on behalf of everyone that has the latest 2.46 build.

1-In the Hair's Material coption, it only shows the word "Material" and a number nest to it. Even if we only have 2 materials ready and named, the option gives us more choices then we have. Is there a way to select the NAMED material we've made?

2-This isn;t a question. Just inform you and others that the latest 2.46 build automaticlly Bakes when the user presses "Alt + A"

    Thank you for the tutorial.

  • SEspider,

    1. At this point, you can only use the material index (the number)

    2. many new great features are still to come with the release of 2.5

  • Awesome!!!! thank you for posting...

  • this is great it thought me how to make good hair and how to make gravity to hair and i think the gravity can be made on clothes and stuff like that :D ( cant it )

  • When I render it, it just shows the hair and not the head. Any idea what happened?
