I think Tim Roth is one of the most talented actors to date and if a movie is bad with him in it, then it was a bad script, not bad acting. I guess I will have to wait for it to come out on Netflix before I can judge for myself.
@zarathusa888 Of course I don't mind. I see what you mean with your comment. Sorry,I tend to be very patriotic sometimes...but you see, I cannot help to be very proud of Eliade's Romanian origin.
@nutzw1 the movie just went nowhere, the storyline just seemed to be sporadic with no central idea. i enjoy watching movies that are a bit twisted or take a little time to understand but this was just all over the place.
This is one of the most OUTSTANDING big production films made since the WATCHMEN, and yet it got limited release in North America & Australasia. This film should've received several Oscars. Yet it is relegated to special interest, cult-film status amongst officianados. Hollywood are morons! This was Coppola's best since the first two Godfathers. And he did a fairly faithful rendition of Eliade's masterful novel.
Is it tue this never gota a wide release in the US ?
Is it supposed to be such an uncommercial dreck no majors picked up ? Or there is just no more room in North American theatres for almost anything that's not a remake of a horror film nor is it helmed by M. Bay?
It had limited release,it was like an indepent film with famous actors, and it was no only un-popular in the usa, this movie just came out in some countries this year! ,sad but most people prefer to watch dumb movies like twilight, people are fucked up
The novel is also called ,,Youth without youth" and is written by the Romanian historian of religion, fiction writer, philosopher, and professor Mircea Eliade. He is one of the greatest Romanian and his fiction writings surely worth reading!
@jerichogirl30 i would alow myself to do a litle corection..i hope you dont mind..i have read prety much everything eliade ever wrote and i dont think im wrong when saying that he is one of the greatest man that ever lived on the face of the earth...he created the history of religions out of a desire to make the knoledge to all human kind
@zarathusa888 Of course I don't mind. I see what you mean with your comment. Sorry,I tend to be very patriotic sometimes...but you see, I cannot help to be very proud of Eliade's Romanian origin.
It was like an independent film with famous actors,is weird, but not only in the usa people did not heard about this movie,is just came to theaters this year in some countries~!
This film is a modern classic, such great style. Great to see some new Coppola. Is it just me or did most of the country miss this film? The concept is similar to a 'Benjamin Button' transmogrification thing, but predates it by almost 2 years...
I think it had a limited realease because is not a hollywood movie,I mean is like an independent film with famous actors like matt damon and tim roth,I just read a review from this movie and the plot sounds similar to benjamin button
What i meant to say was that she saw them surrounding him like crazy, loving fans (like paparazzi, only Eastern European). the wanted to shake his hand so much they almost ran over him. hence "attacked by...fans." secondly, i never said Eliade's work was bad. that's like criticizing someone that disliked LOVE IN THE TIME OF CHOLERA because the great book was written by Marquez.
I was really looking forward to this because my grandmother saw Coppola getting attacked by movie fans when she lived in Romania. It was really disappointing, despite the fact it contains amazing cinematography, its screenplay is laughable.
the 'Malta shots' were unfortunately filmed in Bulgaria and the 'India shots' were filmed in Romania. This is a low-budged movie so would be to costly from them to go in Malta, India ans Swissland..:(
the interesting thing is this was filmed in bucharest romania
and quite a few of the actors are romanians , at least everything else turns to rumble , arts are still doing great in romania( from the creativity point of view )
I see the movie. It is great !!!! Coppola is one of the greatest ever. By the way, I'm from Romania. This country and her history is great too. The gypsi is not our history.
Watched this film to my chagrin. Someone on imdb summed it up well - "Muddleheaded, self-indulgent and not much else" - Compared to the likes of Mulholland Drive and The Fountain this pales in the magnitude of bizarreness. Those who revel in self-indulgent, fashionably-arcane films like these I cannot say much. For the rest as bad as the editing is the musical score stellarly sucks.
