On a side note: Look at her shooting posture, or lack thereof. She is REALLY leaning back, absolutely terrified of the recoil. Note how her head gets popped backwards after ever shot, like she's getting hit in the face by a boxer. Watch, *boink*...... *boink*...... *boink*.
Between that and the failure to diagnose what happened, this was a demonstration of poor gun safety and shooting discipline, all around. Sad that a great rifle and piece of history had to pay the price for it.
Stuck in the barrel then she cycled the action and fired a second round that hit the stuck bullet? Looks like what happened to me. The garand won't fire out of battery.
Knowing the way the Garand is designed... I'm thinking you got a way overcharged and/or damaged round. If it's commercial ammo, look into seeing if they'll compensate you in any way. If it's surplus greek or what have you, well, that sucks, probably was a weak case.
What type of ammo were you shooting? Your garand can not fire unless the bolt is locked down. The firing pin will not line up with the hammer sao it can fire. I never seen a garand blow apart like that. I am just glad that you walked away with all your parts intact.
That Garand fired without going fully into battery. It did it partially because you didn't let it slam home and the lugs failed to engage. Glad you are alright but totally your own fault. If you watch it slowly you slowed down the bolt with your right hand instead of letting it slingshot forward like it supposed to.
@sportmedtech IF the firing pin was badly worn at the rear portion, then it could fire out of battery. But I doubt the receiver where the pin rests, "out of battery", would wear before the pin.
Were u using M2 ball?? I've heard new ammo not specified for the Garand is too powerful and beats the hell out of it just wanna know to avoid this with mine. Also u get from CMP??
I know this doesn't pertain to a rifle failure, but just a couple weeks ago I had a factory Winchester white box .45ACP Kb my Glock 36 frame to pieces. And lemme tell you. That rifle hurt. Especially with it being Rifle powder with a slower burn rate unlike pistol powder. All I know is that I was both lucky and that it felt like I had my hands strapped to a damn burning log or something for ten minutes. Took about a day to get the feeling back to the tips of my digits. Scary shit, but everythin
@ElMuertoMonkey That is a stupid comment. Guns are perfectly safe if properly maintained and used properly. If you feel like you are not mature enough to handle a gun then don't buy one. Don't press your hatred of guns on my constitutional right to bear arms. More people are hurt and killed by cars every year than by guns. So according to your logic anything that could harm us should be banned. No thanks take your Karl Marx ways and ideas and leave us gun enthusiast alone.
Hope you're okay. Was this an out-of-battery detonation or was the previous round a squib, bullet in the barrel/bore obstruction and he next round then destroyed the rifle? Just curious.
When you say "newer" ammo, do you mean commercial ammo (hunting loads)? Commercial stuff has too much pressure for an M1 Garand and will bend the operating rod. I only shoot M2 surplus ammo out of my Garand. I'm glad you're ok though, the gun can be replaced.
We were both using new production ammo, no reloads or military surplus. The round was 150 grain, FMJ. And walker0900 is correct about the built in safety feature, took mine apart last night and everything seems to be working correctly.
The 7th round was a live round. The M1 jammed like it often does. Instead of forcing that round into the chamber, I took it out and slammed the bolt forward. We are thinking the chamber did not close all the way. My brother's M1 will still fire that way.
@arizonagirl24 I invite you to join in with the m14forum.com group that I belong to, there are some very experienced expert gunsmiths that specialize in M1 Garand and M14 rifles and I'm sure that they would be able to provide suggestions that would help your rifles perform better. Firing from an open bolt position is an indication of problem with the rifle, if it is functioning correctly then it wont fire from a partially open bolt. I am very happy to see that you are OK.
@arizonagirl24 holy jeebus that is terrifying everytime i watch it. super glad you are as well as you are......... there are a couple of features designed into the garand that should make firing out of battery very difficult...... one is the end of the firing pin has a tang, the hammer end or the pin is shaped like an "L" and this must rotate with the bolt into alignment with a slot in the receiver framework to be allowed to move forward from the hammer strike....continued,,,,
@arizonagirl24 You fire your brothers gun while out of battery!!?? WTF? Darling, PLEASE get some real firearms training before someone gets hurt or killed. I'm so glad you're ok after that.
Really? Unless you never had that gun inspected by a gunsmith the M1 CANNOT BE FIRED OUT OF BATTERY. This was a saftey feature built in by John C Garand. Also you did not slam the bolt shut. You held onto the op rod while the bolt engaged. If you do have a M1 that will fire OOB and he shoots it, then he should never be allowed to own one. I am glad you are okay. This looks more like a squib or defective brass. Where was the garand purchased?
Huh? I've never had an M1 jam. In fact, it's the only rifle I own (other than bolt or pump actions) that actually never jams. Everything else has, multiple times. Even the AK.
The M1 has safety features in it's design. The hammer will fall on a partially open bolt but these features prevent the hammer from striking the firing pin unless... there is something damaged, worn or otherwise out of spec. Have your brother try this with his rifle. Chamber a primed, empty cartridge and retract the bolt to a half locked position. Pull the trigger. If the primer fires something is wrong. You may see a dimple on the primer from the hammer forcing the bolt closed.
First, glad to see you were not seriously injured.
From my observation it looks like the 7th rd. never chambered or fired. When you started to clear the jam the bolt was still retracted. All you did was pull the op rod back slightly to eject the round. Then you eased the bolt forward. I think the bolt didn't close fully and you experienced what is called an out-of-battery firing.
glad you were ok. what did you remove from the action with your left hand while pulling the bolt open with your right, after the rifle misfired on the 7th round? was it a complete loaded round or an empty case?
My sympathy for the shooter, I hope she is not injured.
From the short distance the brass was flying, I take it you were firing mid range reloads not service ammo?
Could you follow up with a close up of the remains of the Garand- I would like to use this video and any related content you could provide when instructing new shooters and reloaders!
If a bullet got stuck in the barrel, you would have got a hangfire or you would have heard it. And then a empty case would have been extracted. I didn't hear anything....
You might be able to drop the hammer on a Garand with the bolt open, but due to the brilliant design, the hammer can not make contact with the firing pin until it is in battery. What do you mean by "newer" ammo? Are you sure this was not reloaded ammo?
Glad you're okay...hope you don't mind if I use this video to show people why they shouldn't ride the charging handle/slide forward on a firearm. Pull it back and let it go...NEVER allow your hand to continue forward in contact with the bolt handle on a Garand (or ANY other weapon, or the slide on a pistol.) They depend on the forward momentum to strip and load the round and then to lock the bolt into battery!
She pulled the trigger, and nothing happened. She worked the action, and manually extracted the dud round. I'll bet the bullet was missing from that dud round, and stuck half-way down the barrel.
The round she jacked in and fired next exploded the rifle due to the squib bullet stuck halfway down the barrel.
Someone (not that dude in the vid) should give you some instructions on firing, that gun is too long, also where you held it was beating the hell out of you.Your form needs some work, hope this doesn't chase you away from shooting. Glad you're ok!!
@CWOSONIAN everyone is a critic. An armchair/keyboard critic at that! This is not the time to criticize someone's form. Maybe you could provide a link to your videos instructing us on the finer points of firing an M1. I hope YOU don't chase her away from shooting.
Arizona girl, I noitced as your shooting progressed, you didn't manage the recoil. Your flinching worsened as you shot. So if you handle the rifle correctly it will not jam. When you loaded the last round, you let the let the spring tesion slam the bolt into battery. Why the receiver gave way is a mystery.
first off, I'm glad arizonagirl is OK. There is a good reminder regarding misfires, squibs & any failure to fire in autoloader. i saw aPlease have your brother relplace all springs on his gun, clean the gas port, piston and op rod well. No rifle, especially that powerful, should ever fire unless in full battery.
first off, I'm glad arizonagirl is OK. There is a good reminder regarding misfires, squibs & any failure to fire in autoloader. i saw an 8mm Hakim, about same pressure as 30-06, fire on top a sqib and it was much more violent. The guy had to go to the hospital due to the bolt driving through back of the receiver. I think that can be ruled out here. I have also seen 2 M1As do similar to this with overpressure reloads, and these were new SA guns. Glad you are OK.
@arizonagirl24 - Very glad to hear you are OK. Thanks for giving us more details about what happened. I'm a rifle instructor and I hope to learn how to handle various malfunctions without having to experience them, especially when safety can be an issue. Again - glad you are alright - that's the bottom line.
I was very lucky with the outcome. I have lots of splinters and bruising, but nothing broken. My left hand took the brunt of the blow to my wrist and palm of my hand. Still pretty painful, but I will be fine. Thanks for the concern.
I am the person this happened to. The 7th round jammed, which is nothing unusual for this gun. It happens all the time. That is why I didn't really hesitate to shoot the final round. We were using newer ammo, so we don't think that's the problem. My brother has been looking at his M1, and we noticed it will still fire with the chamber not fully closed. The chamber can be open up to 1/2" and the weapon will still fire. We think that's what happend.
Pulls the trigger at 14secs, nothing, racks it, pulls trigger and poof, squib sounds possible. When a gun malfunctions instinct is to just clear it fast and keep going. I had a squib in a handgun once, but when I cleared it I saw what looked like unburnt powder in the chamber, that unusually sight gave me pause enough to check the barrel, but had I not noticed it I most likely would have kept going. Hope the only damage here was to the Garand.
The biggest question.... is the young lady unharmed?
I'd like to talk with the folks this happened to, and learn how it happened. There is an important lesson in this for shooters, and I suspect perhaps for hand loaders as well.
Poster, if you wish... please drop me a note and tell me what happened. I'd like to write a piece about this for my shooting blog. Maybe someone else can avoid it happening to them.
@spitstickler, I think your onto something. It looked like the 7th round malfunctioned and she removed the case from the chamber and dropped it. No smoke came out of the barrel with the 7th round so it was probably a squib. I have seen that happen when a primer fires and either there is no powder in the case or the powder is severely undercharged. I hope the young lady in the video is OK.
Moral of the story, if it doesn't feel right, stop and check.
That really sucks, hope she is ok. I would love to know what Ammo she was using. I have had great luck with the Greek and Danish surplus, but have had some issues with stuff from the 1940's era.
Youch! Saw that a friend of mine had responded to this video posted on Facebook. I hope she is okay. Was the 7th round a sqib, with the 8th fired on top of it?
On a side note: Look at her shooting posture, or lack thereof. She is REALLY leaning back, absolutely terrified of the recoil. Note how her head gets popped backwards after ever shot, like she's getting hit in the face by a boxer. Watch, *boink*...... *boink*...... *boink*.

Poster, if you wish... please drop me a note and tell me what happened. I'd like to write a piece about this for my shooting blog. Maybe someone else can avoid it happening to them.
Thanks,
