Green shirt #3 and 4 catapults hold back and hook up . Agree with mgwilliams1000. Went from 175lbs to 152 lbs after 6 months of flight deck ops Yankee station 1968. Nite ops were the worst. Remember swaping from day to nite ops with one day rest. jet lag...what's that??? Don't remember ever being in better shape .Still the most exciting thing I ever did by far.
This video takes me back. Before our 1994 deployment abroad the USS George Washington CVN 73 it was mandatory to watch this flight deck video. I was a green shirt and saw many "near" mishaps during that cruise. The flight deck is no joke! Keep your head on a swivel !!!!!!!!
30 year Naval Aviation Vet, 11 deployments and countless "work-up" periods. Flightdeck crewmen may not be in "combat" at the front but each day is filled with peril if you don't follow rules and be aware of EVERYTHING going on around you. Many times I was totally exhausted mentally as well as physically at the end of the day. Then you eat, shower, to bed and do it again... 7 days a week. That said, I would do it all again.
@arthurleino During workups in the Caribbean one of the ship's 'blue shirts' got run over while towing an F14A from my squadron.
The 'yellow shirts' took the poor SOB's life jacket, soaked with blood and other things, to EACH line shack and said, 'THAT'S what happens on the flight deck when you make a mistake'.
I never saw another casualty on the flight deck like that again. Looks like we learned our lesson.
(Guess who got to clean off the mainmount (landing gear, wheel and tire?) Yup.)
@robkent2002, ya that was a fucked up cruise during sea trails, and I came back from that cruise more happy to be alive more than anything. I was working down in the galley for temp duty. so we probably have seen each other. lol. I just get annoyed by all these "Kids" on youtube who have no idea what it takes to operate on a warship especially when accidents happen. I think they all should do our job on the flight deck for a week and then come back and tell us about it. If they survive.
I was on board the USS Kitty Hawk and we had lost a F/A 18F Superhornet b/c some jackass was sleeping on the job and was told by his Lt. (boss) to keep the cable set for a Prowler instead of the Superhornet. (1000 pounds diff.) and in the end we lost the Hornet, my friend lost his left leg, my other friend his hit in the head and a few other ppl were injured by the snapped 3" thick steel cable. The flight deck of a Carrier IS THE MOST DANGEROUS JOB in the world.
@RangerTurkish I was the first name they called for the walking blood bank when that happened! That happened in mid-2005, the cable fucked up a helo on deck, if the cable didn't hit the helo more people would have been hurt/killed.
are these pilots mad or what? why the hell would these morons start an engine (that too a jet engine) when people are around...in my flight school, even propellers can't be started until there are no people around.
@lavakava Look, the plain fact is that you're operating 80 fighters off a flat piece of metal no larger than 5 acres. Dammit, you will have to have an engine on with people scuttling around five feet from you if you want to project your air power to any damn place on earth. The flight deck is noisy, cold, hot, and full of big lumps of metal. But it isn't dangerous unless a single idiot, a single loose cog in the machine screws up the lot. That's how that guy got sucked in. Wrong place wrong time
@thefsxflyer someone fired the cat early. the plane was not ready to take off. the guy was still doing checklist. but the one guy that got knocked over by the cable lost his legs. pretty disgusting.
how the heck do you get your hands on these videos.
dinohoo 2 weeks ago
Yes, working at a carrier especially at night is very danger, some place like the E-2C use propel blade which can chop you off if you walk by.
