be honest... are you allowed to fly that low? I know i would along with many other pilots, but seems a little sketchy haha. Very cool video and nice flying
I wish they would allow one or two days a year when you could do this up and down the Merrimack river in MA. Haul ass down the rivet, cruise under the bridge, would be so awesome...
Sure looks like fun. I'm taking it that you've never had an engine quit on you? If you had, you probably wouldn't have put yourself in such a situation. Don't take this as a lecture or me disapproving of your actions - aviation is ALL about freedom. Take this as somebody concerned for your well being. Do you have shoulder harnesses? If not, spend the money and wear them. Also, if you're going to do low-level flying in an airplane with welded steel tubes next to your head? Please wear a helmet.
I know this insane but just imagine races organised races along rivers. Like rally driving in aircraft. Of course the winner would probably be the personal still alive at the end of the day but if you could make the trees soft, how thrilling would that be.
I flew a Super Cub along the Snake River south of Jackson Hole, sometimes looking for bodies, most times for fun, and there was a wire depth gauge stretched across that river above Lunchcounter that made me paranoid. I was always asking my observer, either Dusty or Ed where that thing was. One day a very good pilot hit it because you couldn't see it unless you knew it was there. Dusty and Ed recovered the body. Check things out carefully. You never know. Low and slow is magical, but dangerous.
@suppergenus I heard all of this second hand from my friends who recovered the body. They called to say the guaging wire finally claimed it's victim (name?). He was a good pilot who wrote books on flying and was on his way to conduct a class. The wire had no obvious supporting towers, was very close to the river, hard enough to see when floating the river and nearly impossible to see from the air regardless of the sun's position, very important in that narrow canyon. He never saw it.
I've done this on the Flint River in my Airbike ultralight.
Guys you fly the river several times above tree top level before getting that low to look out for cables and such. You would never do this on a section you have never been b4.
Taylor the pilot was in the back shooting the video, that was a passenger in the front(but he was probly doing the piloting chores)
Be very very careful doing this. In an area your not familiar with this is plain stupid. Pilots are killed every year from flying along rivers. Every river in the U.S. has water metering which is done by a suspended one inch cable across the river to measure the cubic feet per minute flow rate. If you find one of these metering statiion cables in an aircraft flying low over the river you are DEAD! Powerlines are also frequently crossed over river channels.
Awesome. On of my favorite aviation quotes applies here... "The Piper Cub is the safest airplane in the world...it can just barely kill you." (Attributed to Max Stanley, Northrop test pilot)
This reminds me of when my dad and I would go flying in his J-3, we'd take it down that low in the floodway. I loved Floodway Flying. :)

How do you keep a worm on your hook when you are trolling that fast?

It's only when you get that low do you realize how much ass you are hauling when you fly.
