  • the guy on the sax so needs a mention.

  • wow that was a seriously dirty jam... hell yeah :)

  • great band, can't say the same for Mr.Cave

  • This is why i love YouTube so much. Never heard this version, was advised to me while looking for Charlie Haden songs. Absolutely amazing!!!!

  • Charlie is Jack Black's father in law ;D

  • Extraordinary to see Nick Cave with these musicians. A songwriter of singular significance, he has entered the pantheon inhabited by Bob Dylan, Neil Young and Van Morrison and is equally idiosynchratic. Sure his voice is not squeaky note perfect MOR. But neither are any of those greats. A genius.

  • like the arrangement but the vocals could be better...

  • the best version of hey joe ! ever !

  • Una de las mejores versiones de Hey Joe que he oído jamás!.

  • that guy talking sucks.

  • that band is shit hot! but that singer is just ridin on some bullshit.... that mf displayed absolutely nothing..... at all..... dress a decent looking fool up in a suit and try to get dumbasses to buy into some shit... and he knows it. anybody can tell a no talent chicken ass except the impressionable dipshits. how sad.

  • that fuckin singer sucks dick. showed absolutely no singing ability whatsoever. the horns and harp were great, but that dude singing was absolute horseshit. what a fuckin joke. no talent at all. the other musicians are probably laughing at him behind his back. people that think this is talent are either tone def, retarded, or very impressionable.

  • @rosinantedelafuente so tell us how you really feel about the singer

  • Who's the guy with the sax? Freakin' sexy.

  • Holy shit. That is awesome.

  • Genuine music. An awesome interpretation of a modern classic.

  • Toots , wat een klasse !!!!!!!!!

  • The negative comments about Cave are very transparent. Your exposure to different styles of music is obviously more limited than you think.

Do yourselves a favor - if you call yourselves musicians/connoisseurs - you ought to take that to heart.

Cave is an Australian-born singer who did a few albums (The Firstborn is Dead - Kicking Against the Pricks) that include reinterpretations of blues/gospel music (and even a haunting tale about Elvis; "Tupelo") that are very original and thoughtful.

  • Nick Cave's covers.... Always different, always amazing.

  • This is played completely different than Hendrix's version. Different key, different style. I like it more. It's much more desolate sounding. Closer to the Tim Rose version, which was also bleak and somewhat horrifying. The sound of a hollowed out human who just cut his lifeline with the rest of humanity - the sound of someone who's just "done". Also something to consider is that Nick has never claimed to have a great, or even good, singing voice.

  • 2:40 - 3:55 fucking EPIC

  • this is just one of the most awfull butcherings of this song ever . it sounds like jim morrison trying to sing hey joe in one of his cosmic states of mind.

  • What a mood of desolation, great cover!

    Is that Sanborn?

  • 46 people like Lady Gaga better. Hahaha.

  • @TimesEyez

no,46 people didn't like this version of the song.it's allowed you know...

  • Nick is a genius and a fantastic singer, but he seems to be a little bored and asking hinself "My god, what am I doing here, who brought me here and why?". Maybe the other musicians are too old and lame for him? *gg*

  • @whsonic I'm sorry, but I should say it in the opposite way: Nick Cave was then too young en lame for the musicians. Those misicians realy are the top of the top!

  • @whsonicy YOU CAN SEE, NICK CAVE REALISES HE IS OUT OF HIS DEPTH.

  • Flat is Flat is Flat.

  • Nick Cave is to Jim Morrison what Justin Bieber is to Michael Jackson.

  • @avenlac ?

  • @avenlac obvious troll is obvious

  • Nick is a musical Caveman

  • GRRRRREEEEEAAAAAATTTTTT band!!! shit karaoke ''vocalist'' (also ''sings''flat)

  • @nicco47

Finally, someone else with some ears! You my friend are correct

  • GRRRRREEEEEAAAAAATTTTTT band!!! shit karaoke ''vocalist''

  • This is the best damn thing.

  • There are actors who can carry an entire movie even if the rest of the cast is crap, such as Al Pacino, Ben Kingsley, Robert de Niro, and this is how I view Toots Thielemans. It's about the only audio-digestible sound in this clip (other than Sanborn's).

  • Toots is great. So's everybody else here. Get thee to a nunnery.

  • @NovaScotiaChick I CONCUR!!!

  • Using the phrase "made it" is laughable. In my opinion he is amazing, but if you want to talk technicality, he has been doing what he's doing for a very long time. Perseverance can get you far. He didn't really get all that popular until the 90's. So really he wasn't noticed until he was late into his 30's. Performing for around 20 years prior. He has a charm to his voice that people appreciate. I don't know what rock musicians actually sing by some sort of standardization.

  • @getmeajuiceboxyouho and on top of it he is a FANTASTIC writer, and is quite theatrical. . My mom got to see him in concert in the mid 80's when you could practically touch him.

  • How embarrassing is Cave's performance???

  • @kevinherbert how embarrassing are you?

  • Not even slightly.

  • @kevinherbert Very,very embarrasing!!!

  • Highly embarrasing !!!...

  • This is awful.

  • I just have never understood why Nick Cave "made it". Granted, I am not so much a "lyrics" guy.. but his voice? John Belushi could sing better fer chissakes! Then again.. don't get me started on Lou Reed.

  • @tychonaut he "made it" cause he can sing and write....is not really that hard to understand!

  • @Jnth007 Yes, but being able to sing and write do not guarantee "making it", yes? I mean, I don't say that he doesn't deserve it, just that whatever it is that he has is not on my frequency. Just like I probably like lots of great artists that you wouldn't "get", right?

I mean, in the end, a lot of stars have succeeded on the power of their charisma. So maybe that's it. I dunno. But I do find it interesting that you say he can sing... I mean.. he's "bar band" quality, right?

  • @tychonaut LOL Belushi could fart better than Cave could ever sing.

  • @nicco47 what a jokey jackass you are

  • @dougpariswhite You are as articulate as nick cave is a ''singer'....perhaps you are under and suffering the affects of the 'china white'' yourself ?

  • @brineb58 no that's toots thielemans, lol

  • Is that Stan Lee of harmonica???

  • Me and nick cave's birthday is on the same day were both "virgos"

  • @egamers1978 Duh

  • Sei grandissimo, Maestro.

  • This is insane!! Don't go for Cave's voice though...

  • very sophisticated version ... but Jimi's solo got fire !!!!

  • What a version, fantastic

  • he must be the new pastorius...

  • Some seriously great players in the band. Never seen this before

  • Man, I saw this on tv, and was blown away. One of my favorite renditions of a classic. All respect to Jimi, of course. Best 'haunting' guitar version, imho, Roy Buchanan Live In Japan.

  • Toots Thielemans born Brussels, April 29, 1922) is a Belgian jazz artist well known for his harmonica playing. He is often credited by jazz aficionados and jazz critics as being among the greatest jazz harmonica players of the century. He moved to the US in 1952 where he was a member of Charlie Parker's All Stars. He played and recorded with names like Ella Fitzgerald, The George Shearing Quintet, Quincy Jones, Bill Evans, Paul Simon, Billy Joel, Astrud Gilberto, Elis Regina and others...

  • What a tragic waste of an amazing band.

  • @avenlac YES....''the singer'' is not a singer.

  • Uploader: Is it possible to write some information about this vid? When and Where?

    Regards,

    Marc.

  • 41 people have use for the word 'soul'

  • charlies haden is an idiot for this one. and he's my favorite bass player

  • Just get rid of Nick Cave ..

Then you will have something that sounds great .

    The band is Killing though.

  • best version of this cover from Mr Cave.

  • @MachinaEYE Are you on Prozac ?

  • @nicco47 heroin, why? problems?

  • @Machina POVERO STRONZO DROGATO.

  • @nicco47 hai ragione...

  • keyboards : Philippe Saisse !

  • only good music lovers can understand this beautiful masterpiece. ---Dsimango Maluleke

  • I love how Toots keeps looking up and smirking every time Cave starts going out of tune

  • @xnophloglas Bemused,Toot's could not believe how the guy in white had the audacity to share their stage.

  • @nicco47 I don't belive you. If that would be so, than Toots would be stupid.

  • Not the best version but certainly a GREAT band!

  • how sad to see Charlie Haden playing this shit ... how trivial and rhetotical a cover.

  • everything was great... the music was happening.... and then Fucking Nick Cave came in with that horrible fake wanker suit and his grumbly voice, I swear this guy is an impostor.

  • @SidewalkFrequencies if Nick Cave is so crap how come Johnny Cash not only covered 1 of his songs but even collaborated with him? nick cave isn't so popular or well-regarded mainstream that the musicians *had* to play with him, they chose to so obviously there's some mutual respect. cave is 1 of the few artists to still be receiving critical acclaim without ever having compromised his vision. blues and folk music is all about sharing the music and allowing for different interpretations.

  • @evgad87 ; what vision?...you mean crass contrarianism...this is a promoters hook up deal...Cave is a poseur art student....

  • With more talent than you.

  • @SidewalkFrequencies You stupid fuck,Nick is just great

  • @SidewalkFrequencies He is a real fake.

  • @krasty23hc not spam...just stupid.

  • where can i find the mp3 of this wonderful performance??

    tnx a lot!

  • Toots makes me proud of my nationality :)

  • this cover on the "kicking against the pricks" album is brilliant. Mr Cave and Mr Harvey and all those cats really emphasize the dark lyrics in a way no other band could. dark, brooding.

  • @gimpslave1 Are you on antidepressants ?

  • Thank you Mr Toots ... !!!!!!!!

  • Sorry cant see it. I like the true blues version with featured guitar. This not a song to get arty with.

  • @MyNameisReece It's not arty...just farty.

  • Wow i dint like it to begin with but i kept letting it play and this is great

  • bravo Charlie Haden and Nick! feelings pure..

  • @SlavonicDances Charly and the other greats in this band...fellings pure...the ''singer''...manure!!!

  • Woooooow,....excelent version !

  • cave gold age

  • man this is song ghost....

  • David Sanborn, Toots Thielemans, Nick Cave, Hiram Bullock and the others, RESPECT!! Damn, now thìs is music!!

  • @deaoft Great band...shame about the ''singer''

  • edit Fucking awesome, magic, all the musicians, esp. David Sanborn and Toots T. love the Caveman 2

  • Fucking awesome, magic, all the musicians, esp. David Sanborn band Toots T. love the Caveman 2

  • Nice shirt, Charlie. :-(

  • Charlie Haden looks like he is out of his mind. - just playing,,,

  • that kicks ass. Jimi would be proud.

  • @cockhead1000

Why would Jimi be proud? This isn't his song. His version was a cover just like a ton of other people have covered it as well.

  • @alerodrigu

Two great covers of the song is all i meant ah.

  • @cockhead1000 Jimmy is breaking out of his coffin to go and strangle the ''singer'' are you on sedatives?

  • i admire hendrix version of the song....but this is just something else...amazing

  • It's incredible good, bud I'm sad that I cold'nt find the record not even other youtube videos from this group

  • That nightmusic host seems to always be playing the soprano, so I'm guessing it's a soprano.

  • Nice Dark version....emotional...

  • @designermite Yes the ''vocal'' was dark...like shit!!!

  • SO GOOD!!!

  • wow.

  • Don't forget "Don Alias" on congas =)

  • Some distant metallica even ?

What a strange but wonderfull melting pot

  • Hendrix is god and so is Nick!

  • @Django5198 Are you on Prozac ?

  • for me, the title should be "Charlie Haden and Toots Thielemans & (smaller) nick cave- Hey Joe"

  • ah, the beauty of it all, what a combination of musicians, take it away Toots!

  • @DocRocz You have good taste man!!!

  • With all dew respect this sounds great, until this guy opens his mouth and fucks it up! Everyone else is amazing, but this singer is just lame.

  • @DocRocz with all due respect, Nick Cave takes this song from good to excellent!

  • @lilyslimit You must be depressed.

  • @DocRocz Yes, a dew on his horrible ''vocal''

  • The guitarist looks like it might be Hiram Bullock (sp?)

  • @danilomarrone The guitarist IS Hiram Bullock. He was in the house band for the Night Music show.

  • who's the guitar player?

  • @tracer 4 you sorry but you are so far away from brain

  • who is that sax player and is he playing a sopranino?

  • @ogulkoker David Sanborn, and yes, he is playing a sopranino.

  • @scmm42 actually thats a soprano I believe. A sopranino is curled like a regular sax.

  • @MartijnHover The sopranino comes in both curved and straight forms. Check it out on Google.

  • Judging from the length, it looks like a sopranino.

It is also easier for Alto players. It shares the same key.

  • Judging from the length, it looks like a sopranino.

Also, it is easier for Alto players. (same key)

  • The length looks like a sopranino.

Also, it is easier for Alto players (same key).

  • @MartijnHover The length looks like a sopranino.

Also, it is easier for Alto players (same key).

  • @scmm42 That's not a sopranino but a soprano that David Sanborn is playing....but dig the hairstyle;-)

  • Before I checked out this performance, I thought The Leaves' version was the best. (this puts Jimi's Joe down in third place IMO!

  • @HowlinJ99 You call yourself Howlin, like in Wolf and you like the ''singer''....have you been eating dog food?

  • Find this track on Kicking Against The Pricks CD-Best covers album made.

Mick harvey on guitar is playing on this clip

  • and don't get me started on that bass player... he don't know when to stop... knowimean?

  • @radebrecht

Sorry, but you are so far away from Musik!

  • i was comenting on gunnabee's stupid comment who said something about toots thielemans ("he doesen't know when to stop" or something like that...) i was jesting my frind. if you didn#t get that just ask...

  • yeah , just like the singer... too much ..singing.. right..?

  • @radebrecht The ''singer'' is not a singer's shoelace.

  • @Gunnabee Probably trying to compensate for the ''singer''

  • wow......

  • when and where?

  • Cool David Sanborn in a "wolverine" version!

    ahhaahahahahahhaah

  • @colamesta ?

  • Is this on record too ?

  • Excellent - thank you . Can you tell me is it Charlie Mariano on soprano sax and who are the other musicians?

  • this ist a sopranino and it's David Sanborn

  • @jbassification Hiram Bullock Guitar,Don Alias and Omar Hakim percussion,Charlie Haden bass,The rest?

  • toots thielemans!!!! famous harmonica player

  • Amasing version, outstanding excellent! Thanks for sharing this!

  • Now this really is too good. Professional musicians that know how to play instuments, that is a real change. With N Cave on vocals. Listen to the bass; it adds further density to the mood that is already laden with dread.

  • Really? I found the vocals to be dreadfully monotonous and it was sad to see how great jazz musicians could serve up such a lifeless backing.

Let me go back now and listen to Jimi to cleanse myself of this crap

  • why you giving me thumbs down? This is some jive shit right here. Doesn't anyone else have ears to hear it????????

  • Were giving you a thumbs down because u dont understand thoughtful, deep and soulful blues music.
