The next step is not the conciousness. The next step is the "social" consciousness. The individual will not have the global understanding of the world except for simplified version. But each individual has a protocol to reach his neighbor. And the knowledge is only in the society. And therefore philosophers will lose their profession if they keep talking of individual consciousness like the brain.
