OK, anyone have any idea how something that looks that top heavy not tip over? I know the top must be lighter than it looks, it's just that it looks like most of the weight is way above the waterline. What's the real story? How can this be?
@Douglas1121965, most of the heavy stuff is in the lower parts of the hull. Also, in ships you don't necessarily need to have the center of gravity below the center of buoyancy.
It looks like a bloated over-sized yacht. Where are the graceful-looking ships? Other than Queen Mary 2, I don't think there are any. The Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth are nothing more than Holland America ships with different livery and more elegant interiors.
*Why do human want to design and to build huge ship and large aeroplane, but no other species of animals?
I mean that only human will dream about building big travelling vehicle, such as A380 or the Oasis of the Sea. However, animals will not even dream about it.
THANK YOU IN ADVANCE for your craetive idea and brainstorm!!! :)
@applesweeter Humans aren't really alone. For example, many animals try to make the largest nest to attract a mate, going with the same bigger better philosphy that humans have. Its the whole, "if I can make something better than I'm better" idea.
Actually there has been four nuclear-powered cargo ships, of which one is still sailing under nuclear power.
There's also more than one nuclear-powered icebreaker. Out of nine six are still in active service, one preserved as a museum and two await for refit or scrapping.
Nuclear propulsion is not commercially viable (I have no idea how the Russian owners of NS Sevmorput make the ends meet), so only governments can afford operating nuclear-powered ships.
Not quite. Nuclear power plants use controlled (non-explosive) nuclear fission reactions to generate heat that is used to heat water and produce steam which, in turn, drives a steam turbine connected to a generator that produces electricity.
In ships and submarines the propeller is usually directly connected to the steam turbine, but diesel-electric variants exist as well (French and Chinese subs).
Check the Wikipedia article on "nuclear power" to learn more.
Jet engines burn kerosene (jet fuel). It has some similarities with diesel, but as far as I know the two aren't interchangeable.
Piston-engined propeller aircraft use avgas, portmanteau for aviation gasoline, which is, as the name implies, high-octane gasoline. Some race cars use it as well.
I recall reading somewhere about piston-engined aircraft that could use diesel as well, but I guess they more commonly run on kerosene as it's probably cheaper.
Tunnel boring machines? Honestly, I don't know. Quite likely, considering the fact that they operate underground in enclosed space, they're powered with electricity.
Area 51 probably takes its power from the national grid, for which it's provided by nuclear, coal, hydroelectric etc. plants. They probably have their own generators as well.
I don't really know as it's not in my area of interest. As I don't believe in all that UFO stuff, I'd say it's just a normal "secret" research and developement base.
Perhaps I chose my words wrong. I didn't mean that you were wrong. I just wanted to add that while the engines are "diesel engines", they don't run on diesel as it's too expensive to be used in ships.
Although I don't know for a fact, I'm quite sure that the engines in Oasis of the Seas burn heavy fuel oil as it's cheaper than diesel. At room temperature you can shovel it as it's not entirely unlike the stuff they put on the roads.
Other than that, you're right. Six gensets that produce electricity for the electric motors inside the azimuth thrusters.
The carbon chains in diesel fuel are longer than those of gasoline, so it has different chemical properties. It's not easy to give a good answer in the short space YouTube provides, so look it up from Google.
Trains, trucks, excavators and other heavy equipment generally have diesel engines.
Short explanation. Diesel oil is thicker than gasoline and is commenly used in heavyduty trucks and ships and what not. A diesel engine works by compressing the diesel to the point where it gets so hot that it combusts, and not by using a sparkplug like a gasoline engine. Many locomotives use what is called a dieselelectric engine where the engine powers a generator that again powers an electric engine. The electric engine powers the train. Feel free to message me if you have any other questions
Would you want to ride a diesel-powered train in an enclosed space like a tunnel? Neither would I.
So, subway trains are electric (as are most normal trains around here as well). Some of the diesel-burning trains also use electricity to run the actual driving motors - they're diesel-electric, just like the ship in this video.
Subway trains are powered by electricity:) But if you want to you can say that they are Coal/oil/nuclear powered since that is where the power comes from hehe :)

Well... This mistake has been made before, but honestly, a ship like that should take a very very very long time to sink. Of course once again, I'll say this now and on its maiden voyage it will prove to be yet another exception... None the less, its designed no doubt to be able to easily evacuate everyone from the ship with express exception of those in the areas that initially flooded.
Hence me saying "This mistake has been made before," prior to making that statement =). Oh and to specify they thought the Titanic was unsinkable. This ship is most certainly not thought to be unsinkable, but in spite of the fact that there are tragic exceptions, its design should make it sinking quickly exceptionally difficult under anything but the most extraordinary circumstances...
actually no one "thought" the Titanic was unsinkable. The makers knew it could. Just one article called it Unsinkable and it was then used as a marketing ploy.

In addition to diesel power, conventional submarines can run on batteries (that are recharged by the diesel generator) for a limited time.
