I WHEN TO TEXAS 3 TIMES IN THE 80ES AND THEY WHER PULLING US AND THE SOUND THEY MAID WOW NICE CHUG CHUG SOUND LOVE IT TO BAD THER ALL GONE I HOPE THEY MAKE ONE FOR MSTS
OUTSTANDING! Great to see the Pooches in action. Kjr0se, the horn on the lead unit referring to was a Nathan P5A. On this unit, it was out of tune. When properly maintained and tuned the P5As were LOUD and, imho, sweet sounding. Amtrak's first F40s had them. Of course we all know how well Amtrak maintained its equipment, courtesy of a pitiful budget from congress.
Those pooch locomotives looked like they had plenty of horsepower, but the horn on the lead that was pulling sounded kind of puny, it's a shame that it didn't have a K5LA horn on it, it would have sounded more powerful with a K5LA horn on that locomotive, but still, a very good video, keep them coming.
2 engines for 5 cars???????? and theyre not even heavey weights........... kinda reminds me of todays tri rail commuter services here in south florida. Lately, they have been doubling up just to pull 3 bombadiers.......
Great video. I saw these same 2 engines parked at the autotrain terminal in Sanford (powered down). Never heard them run until now. Thank you for the travel in time.
I really enjoyed seeing this video, especially the pacing and chasing of the train. With all the Pooches gone, the generation of railfans who didn't get to see them (me) will definitely appreciate the recordings of a long gone era.
Why did Amtrak use these locomotives on the Sunset Limited route?....These locomotives look really old & beat up.

@cuznvinnie818 They were Amtraks power of choice at the time. Chugging smoking oil spewing messes.

They were usually an oily grimy mess with a lot of problems. That's what made them fun to watch.

You're welcome. I think Amtrak used 2 engines on this leg of the Sunset for backup if one died out. I have seen it run through here with only one.
