@ohiostmarine29203 He was an undeniable hero - being a galley cook who went above and beyond by manning a weapon he was never trained on and downing an enemy plane. But in all truthfulness, the Navy Cross was appropriate in this instance. If you look through the Medal of Honor citations, they are typically reserved for servicemen who chose to face almost certain death - like throwing yourself on a grenade to save your buddies or the Delta Force snipers already mentioned.
