  • Screamy screechy awful arrangement (the Duke would have been cringing I think

lol) but great playing nonetheless from a young Robben Ford and Tom Scott

  • Can someone tell me why the drum solo at 4:57 suggests that whoever was mastering this clip sneezed at that particular moment? :(

  • Strange stuff. Gung-ho approach and quite unsorted. Strange bass, busy drumming. What a mess. Good players but such poor coordination.

    Who is it that alto?

  • Robben played with tom scott and the LA express- this is around the talk to your Daughter era!! He is just killer!!!

  • what guitar is that????????????

  • Nice Berstein qoute Ford

  • Does anyone have an idea what he's doing between 1.24 - 1.30? I just can't figure out the descending line he's playing.

  • Yeah he goes di- diddle a ding a diddle a ding ding ding all the way down to a low ding. Took me ages to figure it out.

  • @tony9L9L Figured it out too tony, its decending triads, still cant play it though!

  • @rfsrv1 No no no, its nothing to do with chinese gangs. No wonder you can't play it!

Its simple- it goes ding di ding di dee dee diddle i di (in the key of Hminor)

  • @tony9L9L Thanks for pointing out the error of my ways Tony, I am obviously very confused. I'll start by practicing di dings and work my way up to dee diddle i di's, and hopefully crack it. I'll let you know how I get on.

  • @rfsrv1 Ok brother just don't try any of that fancy standing up style playing and remember -

ONE PLECTRUM AT A TIME (not one in each hand)

I think you're gonna be ok

  • I find it sooo amusing when the youtube critics put their collective minds together, spitting proclaimations that us mere mortals cannot understand. Obviously, TICETOCAR & abbydnospam just employed their ESP to glean the minds of the group. How truly fortunate Robben., the rest of the group and us as spectators are to witness their wisdom. My dieing wish is that they will grace us and all the viewers of youtube to a sampling of THEIR playing. We could only be so lucky.

  • The only people here critiquing Ford are a bunch of bitter wannabes that didn't have it enough to get on the map.

Question: Why did this guitarist get BIG and not you?

A: Management? I don't think so. How about real talent.

Go write a column or something.

  • Well, Coryell has had a better day also. Robben is a great player, as is Coryell, but you can't win them all, I guess :-)

  • He wasn't a straight ahead player, people have all their strenght and weaknesses.

I think his playing was great here, I think he wouldn't have much of his own chance on presenting himself given this lineup.

  • It's a blues solo over a jazz tune, almost country! I kinda like the sound, but it is a little out of context. The piano player also sends him a look to stop playing over the sax solo, but he just doesn't get it. If 2 people share a solo it's called trading fours but that's not what happened. Ford just blew through 3 choruses over the sax player and he is not happy.

  • @TICETOCAR can you do better?

  • @TICETOCAR ...sounds like the chart was arranged to have guitar and sax playing at the same time during that section... durr...

  • @TICETOCAR ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz................

  • @TICETOCAR Don't be stupid!

  • @TICETOCAR STFU!!! RF is master!!! and you is a realy shit here in youtube

  • @TICETOCAR !! and BTW !! SUCK MY MOTHERFUCKER BRAZILIAN DICK YOU ASSHOLE!!!

  • Anyone know when this was recorded? Tom Scott looks very young there. mid 70's?

  • It is from a Lazerdisc, "All Strings Attached" recorded at the Wiltern Theatre in LA. I am not at home to look at the date, but you can google it and find the info. There were a series of about 5 different shows. It was also released on VHS and audio records, but so far no DVD

  • Thanks Feitenfan.

  • this guy is good, never heard of him before

  • Robben Ford is a good player but he should not play through everyone else's solo - that's extremely rude in a jazz setting. You can see the tenor player glaring at him, later on he is even laughing with the trumpet player and shaking his head.

  • jazz is freedom man, that solo over solo was arranged, no one is laughing on robben and hes playing was not rude... he knows so good what the sax player is playing that he can play something over and its fitting very good, that was arranged man... if you dont understand what im saying check "wynton marsalis playing happy birthday" first they play one at a time.. then they play solos togeather.. very similar. sometimes things arent what we spected but be open minded! best rigards

  • Marsalis playing happy birthday is cool, thx. This vid is a big band jam session - everybody gets to improvise over the tune, you play your solo and then LAY OUT. As a guitarist you might get away with quietly comping, but under no circumstances would you continue to blow over somebody else's choruses - it's rude.

Sorry, what Ford played over the sax solo was not arranged, it made no sense, and he was not listening to anybody but himself. He just got a little excited because he was young.

  • Who is this young and cute guitarist? plays nice.

  • assuming you are not kidding....it is Robben Ford

  • Cool!
