  • this was brilliant, not oly did she keep her energy and stamina up during the ENTIRE performance, she was even able to complete Olympic Standard maneuvers, BRAVA

  • u ought to be proud of yourself for this performance...at ur age, it would be very difficult to achieve what you've earned. congrats. you can work more on the edges and speed but it still is an amazing job already.

  • Thanks so much for that, dilah927!

Trying to learn skating at my age is pretty difficult, (it's fear of falling that makes progress so slow!) but I've learnt so much along the way, the most important being that I don't have to be an expert at things I try in order to enjoy them :)

Thanks again, and have a lovely day!

  • Good choice of music but the performance needs a lot of work.

  • True. I'm aware my skating skills are pretty woeful, but please keep in mind I started skating at age 37, (was 43 at the time of this video) and was hampered by over 2 years of continual and painful overuse injuries. If you skate yourself, then you'll be aware of how incredibly difficult it is. This was an ARTISTIC program (not technical), and for what it's worth, the judges must have seen something in my "performance", as I got first place out of 7, and I was the oldest competitor!

  • I understand you did this performance at a competition but would mention that whilst i recognise that it is difficult for those late starters to perform well due to flexibility issues etc you could also benefit by more speed / coverage of the ice and more upper body presentation as I feel the music was asking much more of you than you gave.

  • Thanks for being more specific. I'm working really, really hard to get more speed and strength, but there's only so many hours in the day to train...

Older skaters have to continually battle fear of falling which makes gaining speed twice as hard. (And I always put 150% into every performance, even though it may not look like it!)

    cheers

  • good job i can do doubles and my axel and i am thirteen keep up the work and someday u will be like me

  • Congrats on being able to do doubles and the axel! Alas, I'll never be 13 again, and will never do the difficult tricks (started skating too late), but I still get great enjoyment, fitness and fun out of skating :)

  • K I will most likely skate to it next year for my artistic right now I am skating as the White Witch to Narnia :p

  • My mom and i really love this piece of music and I am probably going to skate to it next year when I have all my doubles & btw you were awsome

  • Thanks so much...what a sweetheart you are, lov2skate05!

It's a wonderful piece of music, but the original goes for over 4 minutes, so you'll need to edit it. I tend to think the music "lends" itself to artistic rather than technical programs, but let me know how you go, and post a video!

Wow...you're only 13 and nearly got all your doubles? Now THAT'S awesome! I'll never do a double jump in my lifetime (too old and too chicken!), but I really don't mind. I'd rather spin.

    Happy sk8ing!

  • You started 10 years after me, but nobody would guess! Great job! 1965 was a good year, eh? ;)

  • Thanks so much for the compliment, vlaurend!

    I'd say 1965 wasn't a good year though, it was a GREAT year!!.... :)

  • Hi Sherie,

I know who you are! I have a copy of the performances on DVD and I had a look at you! WOW...for only 17 months skating you are going really well! And, may I add, you have a fantastic pair of legs that look so good in a skating skirt!

Best of luck with your skating, and I hope to see you next year at Masters...

  • What a lovely person you are, Sherie! Thanks so much for the words of encouragement.

Did you skate at Masters Cup this year? If so, what division were you in? (I noticed in your profile you are only 25, so you wouldn't have been in the "old fogies" division like me! lol!)

Hope to catch up with you in person next year. Happy skating!

  • anyone know what music this is?

  • Thanks so much, A! Yes, It's really nice to get such a warm reception from my home rink! (You can hear John W's pirate voice over at the point of my spiral, too...haha!)

Hey, speaking of great routines, you must post some more of yours up, now you are doing DOUBLES! :)

  • ummm too slow for me

  • I agree. My speed is something I have to work on (along with a million other things), but please keep in mind I started skating at 37, so I'll never be a really fast and confident skater : just one who is aware of their limitations, but enjoys skating for the fun and fitness it provides.

  • Love all your programs! When you do your ina bauer and when you are sliding your left foot behind you (1:10), is most of your weight on your right foot at that time? It looks good, any tips on how to do it smoothly?

  • Thanks for the compliments, emilyhf3!

I find with the ina bauer that most of my weight is on the right foot. Some people recommend that the body weight be evenly distributed, but I find I go out of control using that technique. Tips: try practicing at the barrier or in front of a mirror, really turning out the hips, bending your knee as low as possible, and keeping the leg behind straight. Best of luck with your skating! :)

  • Thank you and best of luck with your skating too!

  • Wow what a great program!!! Love your expression and dress:-)) Good job! And an AMAZING position on your spiral!

  • Thanks beninaa! I find half the fun of skating is making the costumes :)

You can't see it in this video, but this costume had hundreds of gold and turquoise crystals on the top edge and in the front panel. Thanks also for the compliment on the spiral. It is my favourite move, but I'm now trying to learn to do them backwards, without scraping the toe picks :(

  • Wow!

Good job on this program! Your skating is good! I like ur posture and carriage on the ice! Good job! ;)

  • Thank you, reinchard4!

It's really wonderful music to skate to, and I hope to do this program again soon, this time with a proper camel spin!

  • loved this. nice job, nice interpretation, great spirals, including catch foot backwards, and I liked the ending spin with the arm interp.

  • Thanks eskater2!

  • Wow! Great Job! Your kids are so cute cheering! Great Spirals! Great Music! Great Job! Keep up the good work!

  • Thanks so much for the encouragement, KG! And thanks for subscribing! Hoping to post some more vids soon....

  • What level are you? I think I'm about the same and I would loooove to perform in competition !

  • Hi! I'm going to go for my Preliminary test sometime this year or next (the first of the ISA levels). Currently, though, I'm working on getting all the badges with the "Aussie Skate" system. You can be at ANY level to perform...the sooner you start the better. Depending on the competition, (and how many entries) they will group you with skaters of a similar level, or just all together! Either way, performing is a wonderful experience, and great fun! Best of luck with your skating!

  • Ohh wow thanks!

I have done the UK version of "Aussie Skate", called "SkateUk"

I've almost finished gold on free skating....

Not sure where to go next... :P

  • You're welcome! I guess the next step is finding out if your local skate club includes adults in their competitions, and if they don't...ask "why not?". Adult skating is growing all the time in popularity.

ps. Don't forget to upload your performances to YouTube! I'd love to see you skate.

  • great job and nice program. Liked the sprial and jumps !

  • Thanks so much!

  • Love the music choice and how you interpretted it. Especially the spin variation at the end. Bravo!

  • Thanks! Lots of skaters have used this same music, so it's a challenge to try to find a new way to interpret it...

(And thanks for subscribing to my videos. I'm very flattered :)

  • Another fav music piece of mine. I thought your bauer was held ok. Spiral was a beaut. Your expresion was pretty good! And I enjoyed your ballet chain turns. Nice job! good finishing bow expression.

  • (as opposed to what you're doing on 01:09-01.10)

But good job! And the timing on the last spin was impeccable!

  • Hi Schaats,

Thanks for the comments. Amazingly, this was the ONLY time that I finished exactly at the end of the music! I am always either ahead or behind of the music.

I'll try to remember to point my free foot...sometimes it looks as though I'm kicking a football!

    Gotta ask though...who's Deanna Troi?

  • The counsellor from Star Trek: The Next Generation (also called Star Trek TNG). Played by Marina Sirtis. Google and youtube video search are your best friends ;)

  • I did a google search, and yes, she DOES look a little like me! lol! Wonder if she ever tried figure skating?

(I never got "into" the whole Star Trek thing.)

  • The semblance doesn't stop there, the way you skates onto the arena was exactly like Deanna Troi would've done. :-)

I don't know whether she's tried skating, in one scene, Deanna and Crusher were doing stretches (youtube search for cameltoe star trek) and she's pretty flexible!!!

  • You know, wearing that suit you look exactly like Deanna Troi!!!

Good work on the attitude spin, bauer and jump combo!!!

When you're gliding forwards on 1 foot and your free foot is before you, point the free toe to where you want to be heading.
