I loved her, and associated with her as strong woman. Who believed in her convictions, her beliefs. She wasn't afraid to climb mountains,go thru streams & tears, find her a man, take care of the kids, get through life, and at the end make a name for herself.
Damn, I swear that I watch this video and it makes me want to climb the Empire State Building. Man or woman, this song is incredible. Can't you feel some power in this(rhetorical). I love U2's "bad" , The Who's "Won't get Fooled Again",and the like, so I do understand a powerful tune. Rock on and Peace always...
This song is awesome, and that's from a real man. I love this song and I recall seeing the Bobby Riggs tennis match where he lost to Biily Jean. This song was ruling the charts and was used for that match. This song is incredible and her eyes say soo much. Helen rules and Peace...

You can give us a hard time all you want but the facts can't be changed: Reddy placed 15 top 40 hits out of Billboard's Hot 100: 6 made top 10, 3 made number 1, so suck it, boys.
The lyric, "You can bend but never break me..." rings as true today as it did when my secretary mother bought me Reddy's double platinum Greatest Hits album for Christmas, 1976.
@RedDonnaAnn ... Not disputing Helen Reddy's amazing talent, just some of your numbers. According to Billboard's site, Reddy had 12 songs peak in the Top 40 (not 15), and five peak in the Top 10 (not six). Just pointing that out.
billboard . com/#/artist/helen-reddy/chart-history/3620
Back in the 50's in Melbourne my Grandma used to babysit a young Helen Reddy. My grandparents lived in Ivanhoe and they were good friends with her family.
@bink4489 So her being well known as the "Queen of pop" in the 70's, with 20 top 40 hits in the US and other countries, is purely an accident? The fact she didn't mime her songs and even wrote some of them is a fluke?
I really like this song. The message can really be applied to any minority group and is overall about empowerment. As a gay man, I relate to this song on a lot of levels. She is making me cry. amazing song.
@cliiff100 Sounds like you are the one with major problems. Do you believe women must have long hair? My Husband and I like the song. We listened to it together. He is the one that said "Sounds like he is the one with major problems."
Well, of course she is better than any current female singers. The singers today have sunk so low that just about any pop singer from the 70 is superior. American Idol was specifically created to address this current talent crisis.
Estimated friend, if you want to listen again this song and an endless number of successes of the love I suggest you to visit Radio MUSICA PARA MIMOS - looks for his direction URL in Google ( search Musica para Mimos in Google)-. best romantic music of all the times in Internet, is great, is very good ...!!!
I miss Helen Reddy and Karen Carpenter very much. Fortunately Helen is still alive but unfortunately not performing anymore. I believe that she is about 70 years old now.
I'm a middle aged guy who grew up in the 60s and 70s. People have no idea what a huge influence this song, and Helen Reddy's career was, for the women's movement. This song, and the Billy Jean King/Bobby Riggs tennis match, more than any other public event in the 70s, changed the way americans thought about women's rights. You watch the news now, it's as if they never happened. But at the time, they were gigantically influential.
My father worked 14 hours a day, 6 days a week. At home, my mother looked after 5 kids without any day-care, special childcare workers, social workers, counsellors or anything women seem to so much need these days. My mother was (IS!) a goddam hero!! She doesn't need any anthem, university degree or preacher's pulpit to prove that she is a WOMAN in the truest sense of the word. Men either stand up or shut up when my mother enters a room. Women 'getting it done' says all that needs saying.
She is part of the reason all of my mother's friend's husbands divorced them. They became ballsy, masculine and cut their hair like a guy and criticized their men relentlessly because they weren't happy... boo friggin' hoo.
@GriefTourist - You know it is exactly that kind of sexism that perpetuates the struggle! Reversing the flow of negativity does not cancel it out. We are all brothers and sisters. Nobody chooses the sex they are born into. Blaming a global problem on half the population is not going to promote peace and equality.
You gotta love that mid-1970's sexy clothing she's got on, dont 'cha?!
Her nose is a little on the big side.
Oh yeah!, and then there's that hair thing! Back then, Helen had some "hair issues" (in my book, anyway). It's a shame she never let her hair grow long(er) back then.
@GriefTourist I know its's probably hard to accept, but this song is not about men at all ... It's difficult, I know, but please try to accept that, for once, you are not the centre of attention :-)
@akear Britney, Gaga, Madonna and Katy Perry please note: Ms. Reddy is a professional singer who doesn't have to lip synch in front of a live audience.
In other words, she has real talent. She wasn't some phony creation of MTV marketing execs.
Fantastic song that gives me shivers. Its not about being superior, its about knowing/having your own mind, and knowing as a women we can do anything we put our minds to. Some people like to put others down to make themselves feel better..or spread their poison.
@jaeno1 I agree with what you said. Some men must put women down to feel masculine. It is a shame they fear equality. Equality would make for a better world.
Boy does that bring back memories. I would love to have the whole collection of the Midnight Special but since I am on a fixed income I just can't afford it. Thanks to people like you I can relive it all here. Thanks for posting.
