I think things have changed alot.
At least in europe, it's no longer fashionable to be a professing christian.
Quite contrary, I would say talking about your personal beliefs is modern day taboo.

If Spurgeon was indeed living the church age of Sardis, then I suppose it matches well with Philadelphia being the faithfull church of around ~1900, and unfaithfull Laodicea being our current state.
