I'm sorry, but does anyone else think that the idea that everything has to be redone in 3D animation is getting old. They might as well have given us a great live action film. Tin Tin was never so over the top that they couldn't have done it.
@NelsonStJames The 3D element have been added to this film quite recently, in the common trait nowdays. From the beginning this project had only Snowy (Milou) as computer generated, but after a little while they switched so all characters were done in motion capture, and now they even switched it into 3D which of course is not really needed for this kind of film.
The two live action Tintin movies from 1961 and 1964 shows that just plain live action works fine, but sadly they scratched that idea
@Bains66 No he is in fact from Belgium and speak french, but for obvious reasons they let him speak english in the film. You know just like germans in World War II movies normally speak english, which of course tjey didnt in reality.
Sad but true fact is that mainly americans don't like movies where subtitling is needed. Meaning movies where another languages are spoken.
In the bristish translation of the Tintin books the comic is set in England sort of, but in Belgium is the original place.
@Bains66 Good Lord no. As the other guy said he's actually from Belgium. Herge's English translated versions of the comics sometimes appear as if in England (because English names are used)- though it's very vague & his home settings of scenery/architecture/cars/clothing etc still look more like continental Europe of that era. If they're going to do it in English, an English actor probably makes sense. However Tintin as an American would just be wrong. He's a European character of a certain era.
@MrDragon1968 Yes, but what i mean is tintin speaks american in the cartoons, in the interest of ppl who are fans of the cartoon, they should have made tintin american, now he just sounds like a posh man, and that makes him look like an idiot in this movie lol
@Bains66 Lol. What 'cartoons' are you talking about? You friggin' numpty. Tintin was a cartoon character created by Herge- in a Belgium comic strip! Making him 'American' is not in the interest of people who are actually fans . If you've seen some weird copied 'reinvention' of Tintin on tv- with an American voice over - that doesn't mean this actual film version, which is trying to be somewhat true and respecting the original source material, should then just copy that for no reason.
@MrDragon1968 you idiot, they made a tintin cartoon, if you look it up on the net it tells you about it, i know he is a cartoon character created by herge. You need to understand that some tintin fans are interested and prefer his american voice in the cartoons. Just because they are making the movie doesn't mean they have to be true to the original source. Call yourself a tintin fan, dont even know theres a tintin cartoon, nw whos the twat, SUCK IT
@Bains66 Dude, I'm not the idiot. You are. Tintin is not an American! What planet are you on? You ever read any of Herge's actual work? The actual cartoon character, in all the printed cartoon versions, is not an American. No one cares whether you've watched some daft tv cartoon remake, where Tintin has been dubbed by an American- therefore this 'concept' is embedded into your mind. It's got fuck all to do with the real character in the actual comics, which the film is attempting to be true to.
@MrDragon1968 Yes you are, and im not your dude. Im not saying tintin is american from the comics you retard, im saying he is american in the cartoons, if you watch the cartoons then you would know what im talking about. No one cares if you didnt watch the american cartoons, what does that say about you, your dumb and you call yourself a tintin fan when your not even aware of the american cartoon versions. The movie would be much better if tintin had american voice and loads people agree with me
@Bains66 Can't believe I'm having an argument about Tintin! The cartoon remake you've seen was dubbed into multiple languages for different countries. It's irrelevant that an American was used to voice the version you saw, he's not an American character. The film makers are obviously trying to stay closer to Herge's creation by using a European sounding actor, though in reality Tintin's not a Brit either. If you're that butt hurt about it don't go and watch the movie. No one else gives a shit.
@MrDragon1968 I dont give a shit what u think, he is american in the cartoon, if you dont believe me, then go watch it u dumbfuck, and go fuck urself im gon watch the movie, no one gives a shit what u say, so go butt fuck ur dad up the bum
I suspect Herge is very happy in his grave that Spielberg hasn't completely re-invented his character as someone from a different continent, just for your emotional sake.
@Bains66@Bains66 Belgian artist Georges Rémi created Tintin. While Tintin was written in French mostly...It is very likely he spoke all three common languages. Dutch, French, German. There is some belief he also would have known English. The story, Tintin and Alph-Art, was unfinished at the time of Rémi's death. The final ,completed, part of that story is said to have Tintin near death in a trap, wheither Rémi had planned to kill off Tintin or how Tintin would have escaped we will never know.
Can't w8 to see this! I'm a fan of the series I watched in Cartoon Ntw and in HBO fam as a kid, also the comics! When it becomes a film it is always different I know, but I'm opened minded and won't complain XD I hv a funny thought now that I remember... to read the books to learn French and to watch the series to practice English LOL
0:37 -- Man's best friend. Billions of blistering barnacles, words can't describe how excited I am about this movie. It's about time the world was reintroduced to Indiana Jones' granddaddy.
@ChuckNorrisFilms1 Spielberg bought the rights to Tintin 1982 but gotten side tracked time and time again. So in that regard the film is long over due. It's been waiting long before Transformers, Smurfs and the like were ever considered for the big screen.
And when Universal pulled out from this project it looked once again to shelved. A company not trusting Spielberg and Jackson (post LotR) with their money is quite extra-ordinary. Usually they are the first ones to get showered in cash.
@alfsal67 Those are other ones- smurfs and Transformers, also Indiana Jones (Two of which were shitty saturday morning cartoons), and, I, personally would prefer to become acquainted with some new characters, instead of the same... Repeatedly.
I'm not going to watch this movie. I mean, I love TinTin and especially this story, but... IT'S CGI AND IN ENGLISH. D: Of course, you could probably watch it dubbed in French if you bought the DVD, but still.
@HarryplusHermione its pronounced differently everywhere. i mean, snowy is milou in the original but it doesn't mean we have to call him that. the comic is universal, so everybody can read it or pronounce it how they want to.
And also, i think you'll find it's Tintin, not TinTin :/
@HarryplusHermione Yes :L - sorry if I came across rude before by the way :s Also, Dupond and Dupont are Thompson and Thomson in the english version :)
@HarryplusHermione Yes several of the characters have different names in different countries, in french it's Tintin et Milou, in english Tintin and Snowy, in german Tim und Struppi, in flemish/dutch Kuifje het Bobbie, and so on.
Wikipedia have listings of all the different names of the major characters in various countries. Here in Sweden we use the french names for Tintin and his dog but call Tryphon Tournesol the name Karl Kalkyl which is similar to the english Cuthbert Calculus.
Its hard to express how conflicted I am about this movie. As one of those few yankees who's loved Tintin since childhood, I'm disappointed to subject Herge to even more commercialism in the US. However, I'm overjoyed that our youth will have new access to better stories and greater adventures than the usual crap Hollywood puts out. Lets hope Spielberg has a gem here.
I really loved these comics but I thought it would have been smarter to base this movie of "cigars of the pharoah" or something because "secret of the unicorn" didn't hold alot of action.
Personally, I would have prefered a movie about the Seven Crystal balls/Prisoners of the Sun... as it was the most mysterious/fascinating books IMO. Well, at least, those books (and the animated movie based on them) are my favorites (and I wasn't even a BIG Tintin fan... my father was and I began to destro... err... read his old comic books at a young age... I was much more of an Asterix reader I think but Tintin was okay).
They are going to make a triology for Tintin. Seven Crystal Balls and Prisoners of the Sun will be in the next movie. At least that's what Wikipedia says and is probably true.
This international video says The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn at the title screen, but the US one just says "The Adventures of Tintin"
Robert Zemeckis This not film your looking for to revitalize the Yellow Submarine Remake.
Note to everybody: On the Yellow Submarine Remake. Disney fled because people hated the technology not the movie itself. So if the tech becomes likable it may return.
they ruined it... tintin wasnt meant to be recreated in 3D.
fuck this 2011 3d everything, they should have at least used the same people that voiced the cartoon series... this just looks bad, i feel like my childhood just got derstroyed
@MmownedBowser2222 Don't be foolish. In the cartoon some of the characters aren't even voiced by the same gender. Everyone knows that modern animation recreates the voice actors likeness, to make for realistic facial capture. A real disaster would be if they tried to tie the however-old-he-must-be original voice actor for Tintin to an animated face. Even worse, they could have tried to film it in live action, on the same budget. We'll have M. Night Shamylon direct, starring Nic cage as Tin Tin!
@Johnlindsey289 Maybe, but this still looks like more of the same type of animation seen in Polar Express, Beowulf and Christmas Carol. Maybe they have improved Mocap techniques since Avatar, but, based on what i've seen in this trailer, still not quite enough yet to fully re-create a convincingly realistic living, breathing human being with truly believable, soulful looking eyes.
Well it's from WETA and they know how to perfect CGI animation in realism and they proved it in LOTR and Avatar and maybe with this one. The Eyes look like they are right. Cameron did showed Spielberg and Jackson this movie at a sneek preview of Avatar and they convinced him that WETA should do the movie in late 2009 and they hired the company as filming began in february 2010. And what makes Avatar's mocap different?
@Johnlindsey289 The eyes look slightly better but still not 100% realistic to me and probably never will. What makes Avatar's mocap different is that is was used to create alien creatures as oppsosed to fellow human beings that we are used to looking at every single day.
@TheAltair4 I think you miss the point that its not meant to be realistic, but a cartoonish quality. You might be right that MOCAP just isnt right choice but dont think that tintin is meant to be 100% lifelike - regardless of technology.
@fredfinks No, i haven't missed the point. Just look at the MOCAP Jeff Bridges in Tron Legacy and you'll see exactly what i mean. Now i'm not saying that there isn't an intended cartoonish quality the filmmakers are going for with films like this and the others i mentioned but at the same time the whole point of trying to make animated films this way is to strive for the greatest level of realism possible so that we as audience members can more fully invest in the story's characters emotionally.
@TheAltair4 Bare with me, What are you saying they should do? Just use 2d until cgi is perfected to produce perfect humans? Because thats what i dont want, a perfect human. Tintin is a cartoon human. My first reaction to seeing his face and haddocks is that "oh no, they are trying to be just a little too real". My fav shot so far is the one of the desert. Its got this painted, cartoonish quality. I agree mocap might be or is crap but what should they be doing now?
@TheAltair4 As 3D artists, we DON'T want to create realism, we want to achieve BELIEVABILITY. This film is a hybrid between a realistic and stylized art style. MOCAP is the most effective way of getting the audience to buy into this visual style since, in itself, MOCAP is a sort of hybrid between the real world and our art. EMOTIONS have nothing to do with the style of animation. We are so good, we can get you fully invested in the emotion with or without the MOCAP.
@Cheese71 I see no difference between realism and believability myself, and while emotions may have nothing to do with a particular animation style they have everything to do with truly engaging an audience and making them an active, emotional participant in the story. I'm not saying that this particular style of animation is completely devoid of heart or soul but i am saying that it still needs some improvement to be anywhere nearly as powerful or involving as a traditional live action feature.
@TheAltair4 You are contradicting yourself. In your response to frdfinks you say the whole point of using this style is to get an audience to fully invest, emotionally. Now you say the emotions have nothing to do with a particular animation style. And there is a huge difference between realism and believability. Toy Story is NOT realistic obviously, but when you watch it on screen you don't question the movie. You accept it as being "correct" and buy into what is going on. That is believability.
@Cheese71 Hal Holbrook, one of my all time favorite veteran character actors summed up the basic point i'm trying to make here quite beautifully once in an interview. In it he said "Everything these days seems to be all about digital effects. But the films that really mean something, unless you're a mindless child, are the ones where you care about the people in it. That's what made Forrest Gump such a surprise hit. Of course Hollywood thought it was a losing idea and that it would never sell."
@TheAltair4 This quote may have been accurate like 20 years ago, but it sounds very ignorant today. This is like Spielberg saying video games cannot tell a story... That may have been correct in the Atari 2600 days, but it no longer is. Digital effects have nothing to do with you caring or not caring about the characters. There have been hundreds of movies that are enhanced by digital effects where the audience is left crying/laughing/mad. So the point you are trying to make is quite outdated...
A tribute to Herge, for what he has done to glow our childhood,he made a fusion of politics nd adventure of that time...Borduria nd the rival neighbouring country Syldavia....
It's not Spielberg's style to go out on a cliffhanger. Really, I think they're going to wrap it up with a snippet of Red Rackham in case they don't make a big enough profit for part 2. He's a storyteller director. I doubt they'd include Calculus at all. It's a pain in the ass to throw in a new character in the second half of a movie.
i bet that they are going to make a new Tin Tin cartoon series after this movie. Or, maybe just new Tin Tin comics, then a new cartoon series based on these comics.
@bluemime86 That is a bet you will lose. Hergé was very strict with that no one is allowed to continue Tintin after his death. The only new stories that have been made is rather inferior bootlegs like "Tintin in Thailand" and "Breaking Free".
The Nelvana cartoon is not complete by the way. They skipped the two first stories, "Tintin in the Land of the Soviets" and "Tintin in the Congo".
@bluemime86 There already was a cartoon series. Making a new one wouldn't make sense, and it wouldn't be as good. And as alfsal67 already said, Herge doesn't want anyone to continue Tintin. It would be like how the Twilight Zone was continued after Rod died- it would be stupid.
The scene at 0:45 is probably where a minor character dies (I'm not going to spoil it, but it can be seen in the Secret of the Unicorn cartoon); this would mean they changed it somewhat as the scene in question is actually in broad daylight in the cartoon, and Tintin isn't carrying a gun. The car getting away and the body lying in the door opening (look closely at 0:45) are identical though.
That's about all I noticed about this trailer. I'll stop now. Hope my analysis didn't annoy anyone!
Another interesting thing to note is that the scene that is shown at 0:25 has to be the beginning of the cartoon of Secret of The Unicorn, as Tintin sees this ship model for the first time at a market. Shortly after buying the model, he gets somewhat harassed by both Sakharine and Barnaby, both of them wanting the ship as well.
One more thing: it's been stated that this movie is in fact a combination of The Crab with the Golden Claws, The Secret of the Unicorn and Red Rackham's Treasure.
@TK0Knockout The follow-up to "The Secret of the Unicorn", Red Rackham's Treasure will not be part of this film. If this does well at the box office "Red Rackham's Treasure" will be the next film, followed by "The Seven Crystal Balls" and "Prisoners of the Sun". That's the general plan anyway.
Film-wise Sakharine is rumored to be an heir to Rackham and therefore interested in getting the model of the ship which led to his ancestor's demise.
@alfsal67 Although Wikipedia states Red Rackham's Treasure is going to be part of this movie, I think you're right in saying that it won't be; after all, it was be Professor Calculus' first appearance in that episode, and so far we haven't heard if he'll be in the movie. Then again, he might make a beautiful cameo at the end of the movie (I'm seriously counting on that)!
As for Sakharine, I guess it IS him at 0:37 then! Look closely, he looks exactly the same as his cartoon counter-part!
@alfsal67 Writer Anthony Horrowitz has confirmed that the second film is actually Prisoners of the Sun. He is the screenwriter.
I imagine that they want to introduce the Captain properly in this film, and that they will introduce Calculus in the second film, perhaps as a member of the Sanders-Hardiman expedition.
Actually, that would be wrong, plot-wise. Calculus was never involved in that expedition; he simply happened to know one of the archeologists and got mixed up in the curse by coincidence. And speaking if Calculus, it would very much be logical to introduce him sometime during the first movie. They will need that in order to set up the story of The Seven Crystal Balls/Prisoners of the Sun, where Haddock and Calculus will start living together after their adventures in Red Rackham's Treasure.
@Mesterius1 I know it would be wrong per-say, but it would probably add more to it. From all the material I've seen, I highly doubt he's in the first film. But then, Sakharine and Max Bird are there, so maybe Calculus is there, but has a small role, and is played by a member of the cast. Toby Jones, for instance. We'll soon see, come October 26th.
Actually, Peter Jackson has already hired scriptwriters to work on the next film, which he will direct (hoping that the first does well in the box office) - and the film they're working on is an adaptation of The Seven Crystal Balls/Prisoners of the Sun. So it would seem that Red Rackham's Treasure is indeed part of this first film after all.
Who the characters at 0:37 are, I'm note sure of, but I guess the left one COULD be Ivan Ivanovitch Sakharine, the "collector of models of ships, among which is one of those of the Unicorn. Noticing another model of the Unicorn in a market place, he and another man called Barnaby try to buy it only to find that it has already been claimed by Tintin. Tintin declines all the offers made by Barnaby and Sakharine to buy the model off him." (from Wikipedia)
For those that are wondering who the character on 0:36 (the rather old man being chased by Thomson or Thompson) is: it's Aristides Silk, "a pickpocket who appears in The Secret of the Unicorn. Silk implores that he is not a thief, but admits he is a kleptomanic. He explains he adores wallets and displays his large collection, apparently none of which he has removed the contents" (from Wikipedia).
He looks almost exactly like he does in the actual cartoon of the Secret of the Unicorn episode.
@PersianLord1995 The soundtrack is not playing in the trailer. It's a trailer music cue by Audiomachine, off the album Platinum Series IV: Labyrinth, titled Sands of Time. You can find it on the tube, but the entire album is very good.
@second2151 oh... it sounds really good and fits well but i hope they remake the original tin tin cartoon OST to make it sound more modern IF they chose to play it
@qazhr The remake of Yellow Submarine was axed a while back. And besides, Steven Spielberg is directing this, and he's a far better director than Robert Zemeckis, who would have made the Yellow Submarine remake (and who also directed the recent mega-flop Mars Needs Moms, though he does have Back to the Future and Forrest Gump to his credit).
With Spielberg directing, Peter Jackson producing, and John Williams providing the score, odds are this is going to be awesome.
@JimSBand : No he won't, but he will be in the next chapter, wich will be the Temple of the Sun (I'm totally looking forward to this since I live in Peru) and he has some protagonism in that one.

In the bristish translation of the Tintin books the comic is set in England sort of, but in Belgium is the original place.
alfsal67 7 months ago 9
@Bains66 Good Lord no. As the other guy said he's actually from Belgium. Herge's English translated versions of the comics sometimes appear as if in England (because English names are used)- though it's very vague & his home settings of scenery/architecture/cars/clothing etc still look more like continental Europe of that era. If they're going to do it in English, an English actor probably makes sense. However Tintin as an American would just be wrong. He's a European character of a certain era.
MrDragon1968 7 months ago
@MrDragon1968 Yes, but what i mean is tintin speaks american in the cartoons, in the interest of ppl who are fans of the cartoon, they should have made tintin american, now he just sounds like a posh man, and that makes him look like an idiot in this movie lol
Bains66 7 months ago
@Bains66 Lol. What 'cartoons' are you talking about? You friggin' numpty. Tintin was a cartoon character created by Herge- in a Belgium comic strip! Making him 'American' is not in the interest of people who are actually fans . If you've seen some weird copied 'reinvention' of Tintin on tv- with an American voice over - that doesn't mean this actual film version, which is trying to be somewhat true and respecting the original source material, should then just copy that for no reason.
You twat!
MrDragon1968 7 months ago
@MrDragon1968 you idiot, they made a tintin cartoon, if you look it up on the net it tells you about it, i know he is a cartoon character created by herge. You need to understand that some tintin fans are interested and prefer his american voice in the cartoons. Just because they are making the movie doesn't mean they have to be true to the original source. Call yourself a tintin fan, dont even know theres a tintin cartoon, nw whos the twat, SUCK IT
Bains66 7 months ago
@Bains66 Dude, I'm not the idiot. You are. Tintin is not an American! What planet are you on? You ever read any of Herge's actual work? The actual cartoon character, in all the printed cartoon versions, is not an American. No one cares whether you've watched some daft tv cartoon remake, where Tintin has been dubbed by an American- therefore this 'concept' is embedded into your mind. It's got fuck all to do with the real character in the actual comics, which the film is attempting to be true to.
MrDragon1968 7 months ago
@MrDragon1968 Yes you are, and im not your dude. Im not saying tintin is american from the comics you retard, im saying he is american in the cartoons, if you watch the cartoons then you would know what im talking about. No one cares if you didnt watch the american cartoons, what does that say about you, your dumb and you call yourself a tintin fan when your not even aware of the american cartoon versions. The movie would be much better if tintin had american voice and loads people agree with me
Bains66 7 months ago
@Bains66 Can't believe I'm having an argument about Tintin! The cartoon remake you've seen was dubbed into multiple languages for different countries. It's irrelevant that an American was used to voice the version you saw, he's not an American character. The film makers are obviously trying to stay closer to Herge's creation by using a European sounding actor, though in reality Tintin's not a Brit either. If you're that butt hurt about it don't go and watch the movie. No one else gives a shit.
MrDragon1968 7 months ago
@MrDragon1968 I dont give a shit what u think, he is american in the cartoon, if you dont believe me, then go watch it u dumbfuck, and go fuck urself im gon watch the movie, no one gives a shit what u say, so go butt fuck ur dad up the bum
Bains66 7 months ago
@Bains66 Calm down Sweetie. It's just a film.
I suspect Herge is very happy in his grave that Spielberg hasn't completely re-invented his character as someone from a different continent, just for your emotional sake.
MrDragon1968 7 months ago
@Bains66 yes, tintin is genuinely an american name.
piero101 6 months ago
@Bains66 @Bains66 Belgian artist Georges Rémi created Tintin.

@HarryplusHermione its pronounced differently everywhere. i mean, snowy is milou in the original but it doesn't mean we have to call him that. the comic is universal, so everybody can read it or pronounce it how they want to.
And also, i think you'll find it's Tintin, not TinTin :/

@HarryplusHermione Yes :L - sorry if I came across rude before by the way :s Also, Dupond and Dupont are Thompson and Thomson in the english version :)
lemmonyish 8 months ago
@HarryplusHermione Yes several of the characters have different names in different countries, in french it's Tintin et Milou, in english Tintin and Snowy, in german Tim und Struppi, in flemish/dutch Kuifje het Bobbie, and so on.
Wikipedia have listings of all the different names of the major characters in various countries. Here in Sweden we use the french names for Tintin and his dog but call Tryphon Tournesol the name Karl Kalkyl which is similar to the english Cuthbert Calculus.

However, I'm overjoyed that our youth will have new access to better stories and greater adventures than the usual crap Hollywood puts out. Lets hope Spielberg has a gem here.

qazhr 9 months ago
@MmownedBowser2222 Don't be foolish. In the cartoon some of the characters aren't even voiced by the same gender. Everyone knows that modern animation recreates the voice actors likeness, to make for realistic facial capture. A real disaster would be if they tried to tie the however-old-he-must-be original voice actor for Tintin to an animated face. Even worse, they could have tried to film it in live action, on the same budget. We'll have M. Night Shamylon direct, starring Nic cage as Tin Tin!
second2151 9 months ago
Anyone thinks this will be as good as Avatar? similar Mocap techniques from WETA and all and with 3 talented filmmakers at hand this shall be good.
Johnlindsey289 9 months ago
@Johnlindsey289 Maybe, but this still looks like more of the same type of animation seen in Polar Express, Beowulf and Christmas Carol. Maybe they have improved Mocap techniques since Avatar, but, based on what i've seen in this trailer, still not quite enough yet to fully re-create a convincingly realistic living, breathing human being with truly believable, soulful looking eyes.
TheAltair4 9 months ago
@TheAltair4
Johnlindsey289 9 months ago
@Johnlindsey289 The eyes look slightly better but still not 100% realistic to me and probably never will. What makes Avatar's mocap different is that is was used to create alien creatures as oppsosed to fellow human beings that we are used to looking at every single day.
TheAltair4 9 months ago
@TheAltair4 I think you miss the point that its not meant to be realistic, but a cartoonish quality. You might be right that MOCAP just isnt right choice but dont think that tintin is meant to be 100% lifelike - regardless of technology.
fredfinks 8 months ago
@fredfinks No, i haven't missed the point. Just look at the MOCAP Jeff Bridges in Tron Legacy and you'll see exactly what i mean. Now i'm not saying that there isn't an intended cartoonish quality the filmmakers are going for with films like this and the others i mentioned but at the same time the whole point of trying to make animated films this way is to strive for the greatest level of realism possible so that we as audience members can more fully invest in the story's characters emotionally.
TheAltair4 8 months ago
@TheAltair4 Bare with me, What are you saying they should do? Just use 2d until cgi is perfected to produce perfect humans? Because thats what i dont want, a perfect human. Tintin is a cartoon human. My first reaction to seeing his face and haddocks is that "oh no, they are trying to be just a little too real". My fav shot so far is the one of the desert. Its got this painted, cartoonish quality. I agree mocap might be or is crap but what should they be doing now?
fredfinks 8 months ago
@TheAltair4 As 3D artists, we DON'T want to create realism, we want to achieve BELIEVABILITY. This film is a hybrid between a realistic and stylized art style. MOCAP is the most effective way of getting the audience to buy into this visual style since, in itself, MOCAP is a sort of hybrid between the real world and our art. EMOTIONS have nothing to do with the style of animation. We are so good, we can get you fully invested in the emotion with or without the MOCAP.
Cheese71 8 months ago
@Cheese71 I see no difference between realism and believability myself, and while emotions may have nothing to do with a particular animation style they have everything to do with truly engaging an audience and making them an active, emotional participant in the story. I'm not saying that this particular style of animation is completely devoid of heart or soul but i am saying that it still needs some improvement to be anywhere nearly as powerful or involving as a traditional live action feature.
TheAltair4 8 months ago
@TheAltair4 You are contradicting yourself. In your response to frdfinks you say the whole point of using this style is to get an audience to fully invest, emotionally. Now you say the emotions have nothing to do with a particular animation style. And there is a huge difference between realism and believability. Toy Story is NOT realistic obviously, but when you watch it on screen you don't question the movie. You accept it as being "correct" and buy into what is going on. That is believability.
Cheese71 8 months ago
@Cheese71 Hal Holbrook, one of my all time favorite veteran character actors summed up the basic point i'm trying to make here quite beautifully once in an interview. In it he said "Everything these days seems to be all about digital effects. But the films that really mean something, unless you're a mindless child, are the ones where you care about the people in it. That's what made Forrest Gump such a surprise hit. Of course Hollywood thought it was a losing idea and that it would never sell."
TheAltair4 8 months ago
@TheAltair4 This quote may have been accurate like 20 years ago, but it sounds very ignorant today. This is like Spielberg saying video games cannot tell a story... That may have been correct in the Atari 2600 days, but it no longer is. Digital effects have nothing to do with you caring or not caring about the characters. There have been hundreds of movies that are enhanced by digital effects where the audience is left crying/laughing/mad. So the point you are trying to make is quite outdated...

It's not Spielberg's style to go out on a cliffhanger. Really, I think they're going to wrap it up with a snippet of Red Rackham in case they don't make a big enough profit for part 2. i bet that they are going to make a new Tin Tin cartoon series after this movie. Or, maybe just new Tin Tin comics, then a new cartoon series based on these comics.
bluemime86 9 months ago
@bluemime86 That is a bet you will lose. Hergé was very strict with that no one is allowed to continue Tintin after his death. The only new stories that have been made is rather inferior bootlegs like "Tintin in Thailand" and "Breaking Free".
The Nelvana cartoon is not complete by the way. They skipped the two first stories, "Tintin in the Land of the Soviets" and "Tintin in the Congo".
alfsal67 9 months ago 12
@bluemime86 There already was a cartoon series. Making a new one wouldn't make sense, and it wouldn't be as good. And as alfsal67 already said, Herge doesn't want anyone to continue Tintin. It would be like how the Twilight Zone was continued after Rod died- it would be stupid.

AWESOME :)))))))))))))))))))))))))))))
23MicKac 9 months ago
The scene at 0:45 is probably where a minor character dies (I'm not going to spoil it, but it can be seen in the Secret of the Unicorn cartoon); this would mean they changed it somewhat as the scene in question is actually in broad daylight in the cartoon, and Tintin isn't carrying a gun. The car getting away and the body lying in the door opening (look closely at 0:45) are identical though.
That's about all I noticed about this trailer. I'll stop now. Hope my analysis didn't annoy anyone!
TK0Knockout 9 months ago
Another interesting thing to note is that the scene that is shown at 0:25 has to be the beginning of the cartoon of Secret of The Unicorn, as Tintin sees this ship model for the first time at a market. Shortly after buying the model, he gets somewhat harassed by both Sakharine and Barnaby, both of them wanting the ship as well.
One more thing: it's been stated that this movie is in fact a combination of The Crab with the Golden Claws, The Secret of the Unicorn and Red Rackham's Treasure.
TK0Knockout 9 months ago
@TK0Knockout The follow-up to "The Secret of the Unicorn", Red Rackham's Treasure will not be part of this film. If this does well at the box office "Red Rackham's Treasure" will be the next film, followed by "The Seven Crystal Balls" and "Prisoners of the Sun". That's the general plan anyway.
Film-wise Sakharine is rumored to be an heir to Rackham and therefore interested in getting the model of the ship which led to his ancestor's demise.
alfsal67 9 months ago
@alfsal67 Although Wikipedia states Red Rackham's Treasure is going to be part of this movie, I think you're right in saying that it won't be; after all, it was be Professor Calculus' first appearance in that episode, and so far we haven't heard if he'll be in the movie. Then again, he might make a beautiful cameo at the end of the movie (I'm seriously counting on that)!
As for Sakharine, I guess it IS him at 0:37 then! Look closely, he looks exactly the same as his cartoon counter-part!
TK0Knockout 9 months ago
@alfsal67 Writer Anthony Horrowitz has confirmed that the second film is actually Prisoners of the Sun. He is the screenwriter.
I imagine that they want to introduce the Captain properly in this film, and that they will introduce Calculus in the second film, perhaps as a member of the Sanders-Hardiman expedition.
VGRetro 9 months ago
Actually, that would be wrong, plot-wise. Calculus was never involved in that expedition; he simply happened to know one of the archeologists and got mixed up in the curse by coincidence. And speaking if Calculus, it would very much be logical to introduce him sometime during the first movie. They will need that in order to set up the story of The Seven Crystal Balls/Prisoners of the Sun, where Haddock and Calculus will start living together after their adventures in Red Rackham's Treasure.
Mesterius1 8 months ago
@Mesterius1 I know it would be wrong per-say, but it would probably add more to it. From all the material I've seen, I highly doubt he's in the first film. But then, Sakharine and Max Bird are there, so maybe Calculus is there, but has a small role, and is played by a member of the cast. Toby Jones, for instance. We'll soon see, come October 26th.
VGRetro 8 months ago
Actually, Peter Jackson has already hired scriptwriters to work on the next film, which he will direct (hoping that the first does well in the box office) - and the film they're working on is an adaptation of The Seven Crystal Balls/Prisoners of the Sun. So it would seem that Red Rackham's Treasure is indeed part of this first film after all.
Mesterius1 8 months ago
Who the characters at 0:37 are, I'm note sure of, but I guess the left one COULD be Ivan Ivanovitch Sakharine, the "collector of models of ships, among which is one of those of the Unicorn. Noticing another model of the Unicorn in a market place, he and another man called Barnaby try to buy it only to find that it has already been claimed by Tintin. Tintin declines all the offers made by Barnaby and Sakharine to buy the model off him." (from Wikipedia)
I could be wrong, but he looks the same.
TK0Knockout 9 months ago
For those that are wondering who the character on 0:36 (the rather old man being chased by Thomson or Thompson) is: it's Aristides Silk, "a pickpocket who appears in The Secret of the Unicorn. Silk implores that he is not a thief, but admits he is a kleptomanic. He explains he adores wallets and displays his large collection, apparently none of which he has removed the contents" (from Wikipedia).
He looks almost exactly like he does in the actual cartoon of the Secret of the Unicorn episode.
