Whats up with the dum hipsters trying to pull a beer scam right in front of the convenience store cop-clerk and on camera to boot? Least you can buy real beer at a 7-11, tho. With the exception that you can't buy 40's in Downtown proper, WTF!
I was almost two or three when this was shot, but it's nice to have time machines to visit an era I was in yet hardly remember. it rejogges my memory. Especially for indie bands like Modest Mouse that are still going today.
I started with Good News, and although this stuff is hard to listen to at first, it truly grows on you, and now I can't get enough of old modest mouse. This is an amazing song, in the best modest mouse song linup on any of their albums. Off of "This is a long drive": Dramamine, Breakthrough, Custom Concern. Incredible songs off of an incredible album.
i love modest mouse, old and new, but their old stuff is definitely the best. lonesome crowded west is one of the most genius albums ever created in my opinion.
i love modest mouse, but if this was the first video and song i heard them do, i would probably not be a fan. I honestly think theyre one of the few bands that got better as they got more popular. sure i love their old stuff but as they matured theyve gotten better.
@1990forever69 It's something that the more you listen to the more you respect. I started listening to them during good news and then when I got older I looked back at their old stuff. After I listened to it a few times through i started catching how good the lyrics were. They were, are, and will remain an amazing band.
@1990forever69 that's the biggest fucking lie i've ever read. i fucking love their old stuff. better than their new stuff. this is my favorite mm song
The Pixies are my favorite band I'm just now discovering Modest Mouse's early stuff and can't believe they sound this great! DEFINITELY inspired by the Pixies. His screaming chorus sounds quite a lot like Frank Black and the loud QUIET loud formula is very evident.
i guess people were bound to find out about this. i just remember trying to do thermodynamics homework and blaring this song thru headphones at 4 in the morning in some shitty reading room. time of my life!
Isaac may be sobering up a little but he's still fucking crazy and I love that. Proof of that would be last year's tour he had some broken ribs and still sang and did an encore at the knitting factory... question is how'd he get the broken ribs? HAHA!
this video is one of the best things that has ever happened to me. i wish this was how there concerts were now 3 guys. there is no need for 2 drummers Jeramiah green has the talent of being two drummers why add one. i also wish at there concerts now they would play there best songs not there mainstream ones.
Isaac never admitted to being an addict. And the only song that is DIRECTLY about drugs is The Good Times are Killing me which is quite an anti-drug message.
@SpOoOokyGhost of course he didnt admit it, but he definatly was on meth at one point. also you can tell he takes some substance before shows, coke or meth. trust me i know
@greenassskateboard actually i was reading an interview where he was cooking and someone was asking him questions and he admitted that he inhaled and did meth.
ok anyone who thinks modest mouse is "happy" now needs to reread their lyrics/listen to the music. their "happiest" tunes would have to be their most recent big singles, dashboard and float on, and the farthest they go is saying "shit sucks but we can keep going" or "shit sucks but it could've been worse." however, lets not forget a key part of the message is still SHIT SUCKS. also, happiness and music are not antithetical. if you want to complain about someone going clean, look at jeff tweedy.
Seriously? Yeah cool, he's all sober now, but you've seen what sobriety/happiness does to music. We didn't like Modest Mouse's music because he was happy and everything was alright. We liked it because we could all relate to it. The stuff that they're releasing now is, sorry to say, no different than the idea of modern country music. "We're just regular guys, but everything's alright". Nothing.
no. your interpreating that thats what I think.. Im saying listen to it. I forgot where I read it but said he was an adict. if i find it i will post it on here
i'm not interpreting anything beyond what you're saying. you're saying that he was an addict and then you tell me to listen to that song as proof but there's no proof in listening to the song in itself.
and the fact that you read somewhere but forgot where you read that he's an addict is also not evidence.
you can't say that he was an addict and then not support why you say that and expect people to believe you.
by the way, i just re-listened to the song--what's your point?
i know that he took drugs but i'm just wondering where people have read that he was a "drug addict." there's a difference between one who takes drugs and one who is addicted to them.
i found it. and posted it on here. either it had to many words or i postedit on the wrong thing.. and from what i read Issac said something on the lines of i can not be near drugs. or something like that. when some1 says they cant be by drugs tells ya they were once an adict. but. remember these are MY ya MY opinion. and im not saying or expecting people to believe me. they can believe what they want.
"Truckers Atlas" is a better song about his addiction. The songs all about his use of meth when he was a trucker.
Either way if you read his interviews he'll tell people about his drug addictions. Also "Night On The Sun" was written about heroin, "Lounge" is about a girl doing heroin. "Styrofoam Boots, It's All Nice On Ice" is about meth (At the end). And Dramamine is oblivious.
Issac's never said he's clean. He says "I just try too keep away from that stuff." But he's no addict anymore.
show me an interview where he says that he was an "addict." issac's lyrics are ambiguous as he's always reluctant to explain the true meanings so it's hard to be convinced based on only putting a meaning on a song.
again, using drugs is not the same thing as being addicted to them.
"There's been a lot of drug abuse. The only drugs I've ever actually written any music on are pills, pot, and alcohol. Acid or coke, you can't write songs on that shit. I kind of regret how much I did drugs. There was a point in time when it seemed like a good plan, but it probably wasn't. Especially inhalants, and shit like that—I think I was a bit brighter before I did that. Inhalants and meth were probably the two things that totally fucking screwed me out of some brain cells. "
yeah, i remember reading that a few years ago. again, that doesn't prove that he was an addict. drug user, like a lot of artists are, but no indication of an addiction..
there's a very bad image of someone who is addicted to a substance, like a crackhead who sucks dick for rocks. to me, isaac did drugs and wrote music--calling him a prevous addict seems possible but is only an assumption without evidence.
out of all the addictions hes had, alcohol was the only continuos one. i dont know now a days as i could give a shit what hes still doing music and drug-wise, but am damn glad he did what he did when i was much younger
It's a bit too fast from the original studio recording on This Is A Long Drive, but wow, still awesome! Ahh, young(er) Isaac Brock, back when he was skinny... I love this song. Great footage.
holy shit this is totally old school! i enjoy it and how skinny they all are ha ha! i don't know how big of a modest mouse fan i am, but i just love them. so much. i hope you all know that and love them too. they deserve it
I'm sorry but I love it. The whole reason I loved modest mouse in the first place, all them hundreds of years ago was exactly because they were sloppy and sounded like they recorded everything on a tape player stolen from a community centre. Plus also take into account their infamous early "drunk" gigs.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Haha, i'm the biggest Modest Mouse fan ever, but i do not like this performance. I mean, they really have grown from just hardly pronouncing their lyrics and even being off timing, to just being rock gods. God, i love 'em, and this song is a good one, but this live thingy is a little off.
toughbail, they were notorious for showing up drunk to performances regularly back then. Still, even if they do get off time, appreciate the energy. They fucking rocked this song.
No, this was their sunrise, much like how flowers on a tree look pretty in the spring, they developed into fruit as they matured and "ripened".
Modest Mouse has atleast a decade left on them. We'll see where they take us. Who knows? Maybe they'll blow everyone's socks off in 2010 with their new album.
that was nice metaphor, but when it was only isaac, eric and jeremiah their music was less produced and more natural and to me that is when it was pure and at its finest and not much can come close, even themselves now-a-days.
all modest mouse is good though i am not debunking them at all, and i am sure that their album coming out will prove it again.
I doubt they have a decade. Whatever happens, everyone in the band is gonna do something great. I think both Eric and Isaac will persue some kind of folk career. Isaac can't really yell like he used to. He is losing his voice to smoking.
I used to hate it, however now I'm just taking it as something different. Now that i'm listening to it more, theres a few songs that I really like... Parting of the Sensory being one of them.
Now that I really think about it, the majority of their older songs held empty/negative thoughts/morals, while their newer ones carry a more energetic yet lost feeling.
yeah so what i would rather go to a show like that. Where i could get in for 10 bucks instead of buying a ticket for 35 dollards plus service fees. I am sorry if my comment has bothered you.
actually, hes just checking his tuning with harmonics. If you listen to the older Modest Mouse shows he always does this. BUT, those are two of the notes used in "shoeshine". :) But yeah, other song needs to be uploaded for sure. This is a a great quality video of MM's early days.

all modest mouse is good though i am not debunking them at all, and i am sure that their album coming out will prove it again.

Well, it started as Dann Gallucci, Eric, Jeremiah, and Isaac. And the earlieset Modest Mouse demo had Sam Jayne on it, but not Eric or Jeremiah.

totally fucking agree.

I doubt they have a decade. Whatever happens, everyone in the band is gonna do something great. I think both Eric and Isaac will persue some kind of folk career. Isaac can't really yell like he used to. He is losing his voice to smoking.

yeah i hope so, i didn't like the last album too much

I used to hate it, however now I'm just taking it as something different. Now that i'm listening to it more, theres a few songs that I really like... Parting of the Sensory being one of them.
Now that I really think about it, the majority of their older songs held empty/negative thoughts/morals, while their newer ones carry a more energetic yet lost feeling.
Whatever. Its all aight.

typical nostalgic comment

yeah so what i would rather go to a show like that. Where i could get in for 10 bucks instead of buying a ticket for 35 dollards plus service fees. I am sorry if my comment has bothered you.
modestrob12 2 years ago
we get it, modest mouse was better and more fun back then. every real fan knows that. we dont have to post a million comments about it though.

You live in the past, cumstain.
jgood911 2 years ago
To be fair, you're posting comments in a 1997 video for Modest Mouse.

To be fair, I don't complain about a band changing, which essentially every band does.
And any Modest Mouse video I watch will have been posted in the past, so I don't see how that's relevant.

can't believe he was my age now when he did this vid, only 20

you need to upload the other song.
The harmonics he plays at the end sounds like Teeth.
bradders0707 2 years ago
actually, hes just checking his tuning with harmonics. If you listen to the older Modest Mouse shows he always does this. BUT, those are two of the notes used in "shoeshine". :) But yeah, other song needs to be uploaded for sure. This is a a great quality video of MM's early days.
