A hand-roll is nowhere near 'impossible', and really shouldn't be advertised as such: Most good kayakers can pull it off, and it's highly recommended to learn once you're decent with a paddle roll. I even knew a kid in TN who could pull of a 'no-hands roll' (arms crossed on his chest).
wait a sec u were using a kick board..... i dont think that counts as "without a paddle" and im with everyone you should learn a wet exit b4 you try to roll kid
i have to agree for the smae reason, you get the paddle roll easier than the hand which build confidence and allows you to truely run rapids sooner with a more secure combat roll
and of course it is important to know how to wet exit :P
Most important thing - you need to keep you head in the water and flick the boat up, you are just throwing your body out of the water and the boat isnt moving at all. push with the hands lean back and BIG HIP FLICK, not body flick
not impossible i learnt when i was twelve but lost the knack at about 14 im now 15 and trying again
just remember keep trying and dont panic so much your in a pool and you've (hopefully) either got support from others or a paddle at your side to roll up using that!
Get it yet? Start flat on the front deck closer to the side that you're reaching up on, smack the water one time as hard as you can, you want to grab the surface tension so get those hands out before you start. At the same time as your smack you move your entire body towards the back deck (which gives your arms power and initiates your hip snap), and your head should nearly touch the back deck as you come up. Head out last always ; )
It's a lot esier in a polo boat than in a playboat. Playboats requre more brute force so it's not very good for learning the right technique..
Doesn't look like you are leaning back at all, lean back until you smack your head off the back deck.
Need to "flick your hips"
If you smack your hand of the surface off the water too it helps a lot, the faster you smack the water the more surface tension force the water will exert, that's really what you need to do for getting a playboat upright.
right i do not understand this at all. ive seen three videos from this guy so far trying to roll, not once have i seen him being able to get out of the boat without help, and he cant do a normal roll so why is he trying to roll with a float?

Hey mate! Good thing practicing with float! If i were you try with the float in one hand ( the non slapping hand) will be easier

It's better to be able to roll with a paddle before you try without one...
I say this because I was able to hand roll the first time I ever tried, and I've always successfully done it since then (knock on wood).
The order for learning is: learn how to wet exit, how to roll with a paddle, then how to hand roll. Not the other way around.
