  • My dad asked me not to thank him on stage just before being introduced going out on stage. We discussed who would be thanked and who wouldn't together. That's how we roll.....together.

  • To God be the Glory - Great Things He Hath Done!

  • great story and inspiration to all of us. let's stop complaining about anything else. what could be worse than what this great individual has accomplished and been grateful for despite the obvious bad hand he was dealt with since birth.

  • that kid makes me not complain about anything in life especially how hard it is, i just remeber that that kid cant see and can still play the piano better than i can

  • i wish i could meet him. he is really my inspration.

  • Hey...you forgot to thank your dad!

  • I was sitting here laughing, thinking about a joke that fit this perfect. Have you ever noticed that a man will spend all his time teaching his son how to play sports, day in and day out working with them teaching them how to catch, throw, hit, putt, block, tackle etc.

Then when that kid finally makes it big and the first time he in on camera on network TV the first thing he says is, "Hi Mom" lol

Patrick did the same thing, his Dad does the most for him and then he thanks his Mom lol

  • Did he even thank his Dad? I don't think so!!!!!!!!!!

  • Yea, that was the first thing that struck my mind aswell.. His dad is like supporting him 24/7. He must've forgotten him, because I know for a fact, this guy loves his dad, and his dad loves his son even more.

None the less, this guy is just pure amazingness!

  • damn he did not even thank his father who according to the stories he has been the most helpful.

  • yah, i was waiting for him to thank him, but he probably thanks him everyday becuase hes probably the best dad to him/

  • because to Patrick, he and his dad are one. they're together in everything he does. hence, no need to thank him.

  • I agree - forgot to thank Dad because of the union of the two. I am sure he would have been floored to hear he did not. And I am sure he loves his Dad unconditionally. His Dad owes him thanks as well and gives those thanks often.

  • yeah, read his book idiot. his dad works 20 hrs a week at a ups night shift. he is far from rich. he lived in a 2 bedroom one story house till extreme makeover re-did his house. not a rich white kid, don't make ignorant comments, at least be educated on something if you want to make an opinion on it

  • rock on.

  • an amazing and lovely guy

  • i admire you for giving credit and glory to God. indeed, he is all good and deserve it. but how could you forgot to thank your dad? whatever reason you have will perhaps acceptable but then that really hurts on the part of your dad. at that very moment. God bless.

  • Just seen Patrick Henry today (sept 28th, 2008) on the Dutch broadcast of Extreme Home Make Over. Moved me to tears when he sang "I believe" at the end. Great guy, great family !

  • I agree. Great guy!

  • What A Wonderful Person....

  • I saw him on Ellen, Extreme Home Makeover and this...my only question is WHY DOESN'T THIS MAN HAVE A RECORDING CONTRACT!!! He's so amazing! I want a CD of him!

  • Patrick if everyone in this world had your courage, compassion, and abilty to see inside people, the world would be an amazing place. You are my inspiration in music!

Bust of luck to you and your family

  • what an inspiratin to all of us

  • i think he is like the lead singer of a metal band Patrick Henry Hughes you fucking rock!!!!

  • Patrick u r the most touching young man i have ever seen. Today he came to my church with his Father Patrick John Hughes and Patrick John Hughes sat right next to me and i got to meet both of them

  • wow patrick u r awesome, u r such an inspiration. u forgot to thank ur dad

  • This guy has a father most people can only DREAM about and he forgot to thank him!

  • Patrick, you and your family are an inspiration to all who aspire to make a difference in this world. I look forward to hearing lots more wonderful things about you and your family. God Bless you.

  • LOL thanks so many people.. But forgets the most important one... HIS DAD!!

  • I saw the feature on ESPN. Last Sunday I saw the Extreme Makeover show and wrote an email to Dr. Byrne to thank him for the opportunity given to Patrick. He wrote back and acknowledged what it very evident-Patrick "sees" more than most people in our society. He sees with his heart. As a Dad, I salute you for what is so easy to do-love and care for a child without looking for rewards. The rewards are there every day in our childrens' eyes and words of love. Bless you.

  • Patrick, you are an amazing person. I wish more people in this world would follow your philosophy on "sight" and "vision"! I'm a grown man and you had me in tears of joy the other night when your story aired.

You are an inspirtion along with your entire family!!

Best of luck to you in all you do!

  • What an amazing family and the love and dedication this family has for each other. I cried my eyes out with the love they have for each other and how inspirational they all are. Patrick totally opened my 11 year old's eyes to see that he really has nothing to complain about after he seen Patricks story and how amazing he is...my son even cried and was entralled with the entire episode. You really are a hero Patrick!

  • Whenever we think we have something to complain about, we need to watch these inspirational clips on Patrick Henry! He is a true hero!

  • this kid is trully amazing if only everyone had a heart like his

  • I agree with KEIKOASMOM. I just watched the show too, and I do not think I ever felt so much joy. I watch the show every Sunday, and I think that this was the most inspiring story to date.

  • Wow! I just saw the Extreme Home Makeover. I've seen several before, and thought it was just another show. When I saw your family, Dad, your patience and care, Mom, your thrill when you saw Patrick in his new "apartment" and at his new piano, and when I heard Patrick sing and play, it was a heartful and thrilling experience. You know what I thought?

"That's the kind of person we should have as president. A good, thoughtful and truly loving person." Loving of the world and what God has created.

  • I agree with you for sure! I cried my eyes out.

  • Awsome story!!!!! Great Parents, Wow!!!!

  • Hopefully he was just nervous and skipped what was most obvious and most deserving. It happens. The MC really caught the ball on that one by including the dad in the award.

  • Yes, that is the one thing I noticed too - he didn't thank or acknowledge his dad !! He thanked his mom, and I expected him to thank his dad right after - and he never did...it was a little upsetting, since his dad has sacrificed so much for him.

  • god loves everyone

  • I feel the same sense of joy when I look at my son too. I know what you mean when you said your son was your hero. I am who I am today because of this beautiful gift that God gave us. My son is 17 months old and was born with Down Syndrome. He loves music too! I cannot imagine life without my son and will do everything to give him all the same opportunities just like you have with your son. There are no limits! You guys are such an inspiration to me.

  • Today I saw Extreme Home Makeover tear down his house today...it was definitely an experience. They will have his new home built by next wednesday..11/14/07..I will have video up and pictures pretty soon. I will wait till the family sees the house first.

  • WOW. Can I just say that I have had a lot of stress/depression in my life for the past few weeks, and your story made me get on my knees and say "Thank you God for this beautiful and talented young man, and THIS FATHER....." oh, I can't tell you how much I cried. The father calls Patrick the "hero", and I want to just THANK the father for working so hard. I did catch the speech. The dad knows he can't do this w/out him. Words don't need to be said.

  • God is so good to Patrick Jr. for giving him a very good father like Patrick Sr. had it been somebody else, Jr. would have been in misery.. God bless you, Patrick john.

  • That is very kind of you to say, iamrich87. However, who's to say it wasn't Patrick Henry that saved me, his dad, from a miserable existence? Patrick Henry is making a difference in many peoples lives. I'm just lucky enough to have been one of the firsts! Patrick John -

  • I'm a single Dad w/ a nine year old son.

I wish I were more like you.

  • I know you did not intentionally forget to thank your dad. It probably would have made him feel uncomfortable since he is not looking for glory. I would imagine that you feel like your father is so much a part of who you are that it would have felt like thanking yourself to some degree. You are a TOTAL and complete inspiration to me and to many people I know. God bless you and your family a million times over and thank you for acknowledging Him and giving Him glory and honor.

  • Dear Patrick's dad,

YOu are such a great dad in the world. I would be so prouded of my self if i were Patrick. However, i still upset with your son because i didn't hear he said thank you to you at all. He should have said thanks you to you, you are the part of his life.

Patrick! don't forget to say thank you to your dad next time because if you don't u would upset most people that saw your story.

    God bless both of you.

  • What a remarkable young man and father. I would like to thank you all for sharing such a beautiful story. I was truly inspired!!

    Best wishes and much love,

    ~Jodi

  • I think he didn't thank his dad because he see's him as part of his team! Yeah for team work!

  • I continue to be humbled by all of the positive comments concerning this story and the others about my son and I on YouTube. I continue to be dumbfounded/perplexed by those who react negatively about my son not thanking my while I'm standing there with him sharing in the moment. This is a non-issue for me and I'd appreciate it being a non-issue for you, also. Sincerely, Patrick John Hughes

  • Mr. Hughes, I was at first concerned about your son not thanking you, but then I realized, this was a time when there was no need for words, there was nothing that he could say, that had not already been felt...done, expressed... You share a bond that is beyond words, tis a wonderous and beautiful thing. Bless you and your family, and thank you for sharing this amazing story with us,

    Sincerely,

    Kerry

  • If this Man does not get elected as Father of the year there is no justice, Mr.Hughes, God bless you and your entire family and thank you for sharing your son with us.

  • Very inspiring. Thank you for being an excellent father to your son.

  • To Jim Morrison- My son delivered his thank you speech just as we discussed, additionally remembering some people we did not discuss. We are a team. Just appearing with my son at such an event is more than enough thanks for me. I don't require nor seek recognition for just being a dad. Whether it is me being honored or Patrick being honored, we always share.

  • thank you very much for this wonderful story, Mr. Hughes. it brings me to tears everytime i hear you say he is your hero. such a very touching statement for a Dad. The first time i saw this story on TV. i searches the net for name Patrick Henry Hughes, seeking additional story coming from you. By the way i am from the Philippines and like you has a son with physical disability. God Bless to both of you and the entire family.

  • no mention of his father?

  • Dad... you are setting an awesome example for other fathers of handicapped children. I know Patrick appreciates all you do for him.

I sure know WE do !!!

  • I think the father is awsome for doing this for his son. If only there were more dads like this, it would be a far better world.

  • I don't think there was a lack of thanks. They are a team of 2 operating as one person. How do you thank your legs for walking? And I imagine that they know that they appreciate each other and don't need to thank each other. After the sacrifices the dad makes for the son, and after the gifts that the son brings to the dad, I think they are even. God bless you both. I think He already has.

  • Beautifully put Mr. Hughes!! Because of your love and unending assitance to Patrick I am sure he practically views you as an extension of himself, therefore you are one. I know he felt that the award was equally yours as much as his, so thanking you would be like thanking himself. You two are amazing and an inspiration for the nation. Thank you and God bless you both!

  • You all have to remember that most people who receive awards, have a list they read names from, so they don't miss anyone, in the nervousness of the moment. He doesn't have that option however. He is a remarkable young man, whom we all could learn much from. May the Lord continue to bless him and his family.

  • Great video.

    :]

They make me take granted for being able to do stuff that he can't.

Yeah, he didn't thank his dad.

But they are a team, I don't think he needs to thank his father.

I'm sure he thanks him all the time.

  • dude, your father works his butt off for you,but you don't thank him for his work?

    makes me a little disapointed

  • I love it. You have an inspirational story about a young man that is not focused on himself and using the talents his has been given, and we find a some way to pick it a part. I ridiculous. You all ought to be ashamed of yourselves. His dad doesn't care, in the least.

  • I am a father myself, and a pretty good father I believe but I know I am not as good as him. I give the father just as much honor and credit as his amazing son. But I am a little perplexed about not mentioning his father. I commend them both.

  • I think he done a great job, he no doubt considered his dad as winning the award with him... they are a team.

  • He makes me so proud to be in the Cardinal Marching Band!

  • Did no one else notice that he didn't even thank his father in this speech?! Made me cringe a little bit after the great story and hearing how much his father did for him.

  • well, the MC pointed that out for him and the younger patrick nodded his approval for his father sharing the award with him...you try speaking in front of a national audience and getting everything right!

  • Yeah, I was waiting for him to thank him as well. It seemed kind of awkward =/ It reminded me of Julia Roberts forgetting to thank Erin Brockovich when she won an Oscar... but worse in a way. Oh well.

  • yeah.. i saw when he says "and a VERY SPECIAL THANKS..." and his dad looks up and smiles, and then it cuts to the band director. ha, didn't see that coming.
