Shenmue will return at some point. It needs to be the right console/s, the right time, the right way to do it etc. Sega know that it is a game with potential killer app status. Sega need new management though, as their current business strategy is inconsistent and bizarre. But dont worry, we will see Ryo avenge his fathers death.
People can make Shenmue 3 happen , unfortunately there is not nearly a patch on enough people at the moment to get Sega taking us seriously. Lots of people = Profit to businesses like Sega and they have to think financially sadly after bad times not long ago. We need 500k to a few million Shenmue fans/ gamers to really do something, but it's not impossible as some people are saying.

i remember buying the European version of this game when it first came out it cost my father $120 us dollars but he knew how much i loved the first one so he bought me the 2nd one also i remember i was like 11 or 12 at the time i was so happy i jumped on him!!!then i put the game on and was hooked for a while my friends was over and watched me play through the whole game damn i miss those days(sigh)but i'll be happy when Shenmue 3 comes out if not i'll make my own version on rpg maker lol

The game was a commercial disaster and one of the reasons that bring down Sega. And then the canceled the american Dreamcast version of Shenmue II and realeased it for the Xbox, the WORST choice they could make.

I wouldn't expect Shenmue 3 to be as technically groundbreaking as Shenmue was at the turn of the century. Obviously modern graphics and more detailed surroundings would be expected but that is well within todays expectations. Look at games like Heavy Rain and Alan Wake - these show that the technology is there, and that the market is there, for fully immersive adventure experiences. What is holding Sega back?

It was the games' incredibly high budget and partly America's xenophobia and inability to understand videogames and movies based around Asian culture that caused this game to fail so badly, enough to not finish the series. Not to mention the Dreamcast died and was discontinued, and the game not very widely accepted on Xbox. In an age of shooters and Hollywood action, the intentional slow pacing in the games quickly turned people off.
I have to disagree. American gamers are not xenophobes. If anything they love to live inside the skin of another person. I will give you a great example, "Onimusha" and asian title, an asian protagonist. Weird japanese demon folklore. And it spawns tons of sequels. The market is there. But capcom has been able to sell an asian hero with little to no effort. You just need to find the hook. And when shenmue came out on xbox, that was MS attempt to steal the american distribution rights from Sony
lol thats crazy comparing Assassins Creed with Shenmue, they are nothing alike. Shenmue will always be a gaming masterpiece and simply can not be compared with anything else made. Yu Suzuki created a genius game
Fable is just like it. Peter Mollenyoux (I hope i spelled it right) Was Inspired by Shenmue. And that inspiration spawn FABLE. I feel FABLE is more polished and added somewhat of a class to the character. Its like he married 2 games. Shenmue and Bioware's Knights of the old republic (Or neverwinter) Deus Ex was pretty good. But no one bothers to talk about those games. People block everything else that was going on.

I just started playing Shenmue again. First time in 7 years. And it felt clunky. The first time that it came out, it was impressive. The things we take for granted like facial expressions was at that time considered EPIC!!
But gameplay wise, it lost its charm. Amazingly, i played RE:Code veronica and MGS2 these last couple of months and they still hold up. (feeling nostalgic)
I thought that Shenmue was going to do that but i guess my memory made it out better than what it actually was.
Shenmue was the father for many many games. After Shemue many games took elements from it. So many games... The QTE, the weather effects, mini games and many more but never no other game was so solid and well made as Shenmue! It was a technical achievement back then that looks awesome even today! These days we have interesting graphics but nothing as BIG as Shenmue was back then. We only care for graphics, Shenmue was deep, it had everything..
I own Assasin's Creed Limited Edition and the basic AC2. The first one I got bored of the game after a few hours. We rate games for how much wide open world they have?? The game is the same over and over. Its just jumping around and killing targets.
The second is even more wide open world with better graphics economics systems :P and the same things again... What does AC has to do with Shenmue! These two games have nothing in common. This is a dumb comparison man sorry I do not mean to offend you.

I really want to know, I presume it about 2000, also I read somewhere that there was going to be a port of giants citizen kabuto for the dc, is this true? it's suppose the giants pushed a lot of polygons, can the dc handle it??
Go college, study business. Raise your own capital and then you and other people that share your vision (and are educated) can snatch the Sega/Sammy brand.

Its alright. I love my DC. But the love that most people have for it is not for Sega. But for the games. I look at my library of DC games and the bulk is mostly Capcom games. I only have 3 Sega games. Shenmue, Dynaimate cops and Virtua fighter. The DC has the fame that it has thanks to OTHER companies: DoA2, Soulcaliber, Powerstone, RE:Code Veronica, etc. If anything, Shenmue was so expensive it would have taken each DC owner 2 purchases of the same thing for Sega to break even.
I think the fist Shenmue was a pice of art no wall had the seme texture twice all 300 NPC had ther own lives and AI you cud ask someone the same question 5 times and get difrent reactions like when u ask the same thing to a person over and over they wold gat mad or irritated and it was a mix of Action figthing game (Virtual figters moves ) + RPG but it was ment to be a 5 part game they only made 2 and supostly part 3 will be the last

i understand your position. ive known about shenmue for a couple of years, but only recently played the first one(even i cant beleive i took so long). But I didnt have a dreamcast. so i downloaded the emulator and the rom for shenmue. Not the best way of play it but for our situation its the best way to go. let me know, and i could direct you on how to get them.
@satmtca It would make more sense to bundle shenmue 1 n 2 so newer fans could understand the story, then release shenmue 3 by itself with next gen graphics. I personally would buy both just to support it.
I haven't played Shenmue 1 but i had the demo for Shenmue 2 on xbox while i was still young and i thought it was so awesome so i rented it once, then twice because it was so fun.
If it wasn't for the demo i would've never heard of Shenmue, a few game stores had it when i looked but the cover didn't exactly look appealing.If they can market it better this game could become real successful and i sincerely hope a third is made the second was on of the best games on xbox...Period.

Shenmue 2 is the single greatest game ever created. The subtitled version on dreamcast is the most fun i've ever had playing a video game. i would pay out the ass for Shenmue 3. They could use the same engine for all i care. Most of the work has already been done. When i recently read Yu Suzuki had retired as creative officer i was mega bummed. Instead of making revolutionary art sega is working on the next Sonic vs Mario Olympics cash cow. :(
I paid 200 for an Xbox just to play Shenmue II in 480p. I also imported it on DC when they canceled the NA release. I have backup DC systems in case one craps out.
SEGA needs to realize that although the Shenmue fanbase is small, we are very diehard and would gladly buy a 3rd installment. With digital distribution there's no reason why SEGA can't release a 3rd installment via some site and have it run on a PC through emulation.
what a great idea! Have the game released on the Dreamcast would definitely lower the development cost significantly. In that way Sega would be able to at least cover the development cost if the game doesn't sell well.

GD-ROM production is over a long long time ago. And it isn't that simple. Between hiring programmers and designers and voice actors and many many more stuff, as well as educating the old Dreamcast programming methods to new programmers and all that, it would probably cost Millions again. And it would make no profit what so ever to release it on a console that is dead for 8 years now..
Don't get me wrong, I think Sega should re-boot production of the Dreamcast. that way it could work =)
Please check out Ockman27 who has recently published three full length live action movies of Shenmue and the third is the original imagining of the story conclusion. Fan movie done with excellent acting and direction and camerawork, not to be missed fan movie with humour and excitment and hollywood special effects too. All the main Shenmue characters interact in this funny and nostalgic epic.
Easily one of the greatest games of all time in my book. That was the ONLY reason i bought an Xbox like many others here, and it would be the only reason for me to ever buy a 360. This classic need to be continued so that we as fans can finally KILL LAN DI!! And avenge the death of Hazuki Ryo san's father...! I wanna see the ending dammit!! lol...
I played the first on on the Dream cast and it was AWESOME!! I still own the original game, and my jet black Dream cast. I would rather have played the second one on DC, but I don't think they released it here in the states. So I bought an X-Box JUST for that reason. And that reason alone... I'll buy any system that supports Shenmue 3... Fans need to be able to finish this story PERIOD...

I've waited 7 fuckin years for Shenmue 3 and sadly no news! Imagine if it was released now. The ENTIRE Shenmue SAGA all 16 chapters, graphics updated, professional voice acting, 5.1 surround sound, 1080p resolution. That experience would probably cost SEGA BILLIONS! Might as well save up your money and travel to Guilin yourself and experience the scenery in real life! I know we've all been patient but realistically will the entire Anthology of Shenmue be released in our lifetime?

Ah the memories. No game since Shenmue has ever given me the sort of magic that I got from this game. The excitement I felt when I found the underground passage under the dojo, the feeling of loss as I watched Toms plane fly away, the sorrow I felt when I saw my girlfriend crying in the park. Shenmue is not a game, its a portal into another existance. I was totally drawn in, and sat up until 4am many a night just to see what happened next. I wish company's still made games like this :(

Shenmue and Shenmue 2 are absolutely fantastic games. In fact, I'd go so far as to say they're the best games I've ever played.

Yu Suzuki is one of many legends in the video game industry. This man kept me in the arcades with his badass simulators. Then I finally got to meet him in the late '90s and he signed my imported Shenmue!

Fable is just like it. Peter Mollenyoux (I hope i spelled it right) Was Inspired by Shenmue. And that inspiration spawn FABLE. I feel FABLE is more polished and added somewhat of a class to the character. Its like he married 2 games. Shenmue and Bioware's Knights of the old republic (Or neverwinter) Deus Ex was pretty good. But no one bothers to talk about those games. People block everything else that was going on.

I just started playing Shenmue again. First time in 7 years. And it felt clunky. The first time that it came out, it was impressive. The things we take for granted like facial expressions was at that time considered EPIC!!
But gameplay wise, it lost its charm. Amazingly, i played RE:Code veronica and MGS2 these last couple of months and they still hold up. (feeling nostalgic)
I thought that Shenmue was going to do that but i guess my memory made it out better than what it actually was.

No they haven't.
Shenmue was the father for many many games. After Shemue many games took elements from it. So many games... The QTE, the weather effects, mini games and many more but never no other game was so solid and well made as Shenmue! It was a technical achievement back then that looks awesome even today! These days we have interesting graphics but nothing as BIG as Shenmue was back then. We only care for graphics, Shenmue was deep, it had everything..

I own Assasin's Creed Limited Edition and the basic AC2. The first one I got bored of the game after a few hours. We rate games for how much wide open world they have?? The game is the same over and over. Its just jumping around and killing targets.

Its alright. I love my DC. But the love that most people have for it is not for Sega. But for the games. I look at my library of DC games and the bulk is mostly Capcom games. I only have 3 Sega games. Shenmue, Dynaimate cops and Virtua fighter. The DC has the fame that it has thanks to OTHER companies: DoA2, Soulcaliber, Powerstone, RE:Code Veronica, etc. If anything, Shenmue was so expensive it would have taken each DC owner 2 purchases of the same thing for Sega to break even.

I think the fist Shenmue was a pice of art no wall had the seme texture twice all 300 NPC had ther own lives and AI you cud ask someone the same question 5 times and get difrent reactions like when u ask the same thing to a person over and over they wold gat mad or irritated and it was a mix of Action figthing game (Virtual figters moves ) + RPG but it was ment to be a 5 part game they only made 2 and supostly part 3 will be the last

i understand your position. ive known about shenmue for a couple of years, but only recently played the first one(even i cant beleive i took so long). But I didnt have a dreamcast. so i downloaded the emulator and the rom for shenmue. Not the best way of play it but for our situation its the best way to go. let me know, and i could direct you on how to get them.

I haven't played Shenmue 1 but i had the demo for Shenmue 2 on xbox while i was still young and i thought it was so awesome so i rented it once, then twice because it was so fun.
If it wasn't for the demo i would've never heard of Shenmue, a few game stores had it when i looked but the cover didn't exactly look appealing.If they can market it better this game could become real successful and i sincerely hope a third is made the second was on of the best games on xbox...Period.

Shenmue 2 is the single greatest game ever created. The subtitled version on dreamcast is the most fun i've ever had playing a video game. i would pay out the ass for Shenmue 3. They could use the same engine for all i care. Most of the work has already been done. When i recently read Yu Suzuki had retired as creative officer i was mega bummed. Instead of making revolutionary art sega is working on the next Sonic vs Mario Olympics cash cow. :(

I paid 200 for an Xbox just to play Shenmue II in 480p. I also imported it on DC when they canceled the NA release. I have backup DC systems in case one craps out.
SEGA needs to realize that although the Shenmue fanbase is small, we are very diehard and would gladly buy a 3rd installment. With digital distribution there's no reason why SEGA can't release a 3rd installment via some site and have it run on a PC through emulation.

what a great idea! Have the game released on the Dreamcast would definitely lower the development cost significantly. In that way Sega would be able to at least cover the development cost if the game doesn't sell well.

Exactly my point! If they make it for the DC with the same tech as in Shenmue 2 the costs would probably be alsmost nothing compared to if it were to be released on PS3 or the 360.

GD-ROM production is over a long long time ago. And it isn't that simple. Between hiring programmers and designers and voice actors and many many more stuff, as well as educating the old Dreamcast programming methods to new programmers and all that, it would probably cost Millions again. And it would make no profit what so ever to release it on a console that is dead for 8 years now..
Don't get me wrong, I think Sega should re-boot production of the Dreamcast. that way it could work =)

I played the first on on the Dream cast and it was AWESOME!! I still own the original game, and my jet black Dream cast. I would rather have played the second one on DC, but I don't think they released it here in the states. So I bought an X-Box JUST for that reason. And that reason alone... I'll buy any system that supports Shenmue 3... Fans need to be able to finish this story PERIOD...

This game cost 70MILLION, but the game sold very few copies to cover that expense.
Sega can't afford that right now. And I'm not sure if mr. Suzuki would work for another company... And I bet Sega has rights on the Shenmue license :/

I've waited 7 fuckin years for Shenmue 3 and sadly no news! Imagine if it was released now. The ENTIRE Shenmue SAGA all 16 chapters, graphics updated, professional voice acting, 5.1 surround sound, 1080p resolution. That experience would probably cost SEGA BILLIONS! Might as well save up your money and travel to Guilin yourself and experience the scenery in real life! I know we've all been patient but realistically will the entire Anthology of Shenmue be released in our lifetime?

Ah the memories. No game since Shenmue has ever given me the sort of magic that I got from this game. The excitement I felt when I found the underground passage under the dojo, the feeling of loss as I watched Toms plane fly away, the sorrow I felt when I saw my girlfriend crying in the park. Shenmue is not a game, its a portal into another existance. I was totally drawn in, and sat up until 4am many a night just to see what happened next. I wish company's still made games like this :(

Shenmue and Shenmue 2 are absolutely fantastic games. In fact, I'd go so far as to say they're the best games I've ever played.
In an age of cynicism where shovelware is released more often than genuinely interesting an original games because they are similar to games that sold well, we need games like this to remind us that games can be interesting and we need them to do well to persuade video game companies that they're worth making.

I still remember the Aberdeen music, my favorite
one, when I try to remember it, I still can view Ryu running around in that truly impressive environment that felt like real.
