I was not a Coulthard fan, but all the people on here saying it was his fault & it was deliberate and that he BRAKED are wrong.
He did NOT say it was his fault 5 years later. McLaren gave him a radio message to let Schumacher past, in such terrible conditions nobody wants to go over to the wettest part of the track, so he merely blended out of the throttle. Schumacher didn't see & ploughed into him. END OF.

Yes, that is all true, but if the driver behind you just cannot see anything because of the spray, then it is really idiotic to blend out the throttle in the racing line.

I can only think that if Schumacher had waited until the long straight to Les Combes then he could have passed there less riskely. But that was the area 2 corners before so he'd have to wait nearly a whole lap. It's a tricky one! (I guess that's why it happened to start with)
You still don't lift while in the racing line in those conditions. As much as Schumi has done questionable things in the past, in this situation, if Schumacher went and knocked Coulthard out, I would not have blamed him, and I would of done the same thing

Why the hell didn't the stewards give Coulthard the black flag before that had happened? David was clearly blocking Schumacher, even though it was not for positions. In conditions like that you can't do that. The stewards should have given him the yellow flag for a few corners, but not for that long. I would say that when there is noone around David should have given him the position at the moment Schumacher comes up behind. After a few corners i think a black flag is appropriate.

@LeondP naja, nicht unbedingt. Coulthard hat Schumacher 3 Runden lang geblockt, obwohl er eine Runde zurücklag. Das hat er aus dem Grund gemacht, weil Häkkinen relativ weit abgeschlagen war. Er wollte ihm damit das Rennen offen halten, weil Schumi deutlich schneller war. Von daher kann man sagen, dass es nicht offensichtlich war, dass Coulthard da auf die Bremsen steigt, vorallem nicht auf der Ideallinie.
for me this was the first grandprix I watched and since then watched all races.. this gp was one of the "craziest" I have seen.. and this was clearly coulthard´s fault in my eyes! schumi couldnt see anything and coulthard slowed down so much on the racing line. I can understand schumi and his frustration!
Wer noch nie ein Rennen Live erlebt hat, kann sich kaum vorstellen wie lebensgefährlich diese Aktion war. Im TV sieht es aus wie ein lockerer Auffahrunfall...und alle fragen sich, was Schmui sich so aufregt. Wenn jemand "mit absicht" das Leben eines anderen gefährdet würden so manche genauso reagieren. Schmui ist, war und wird immer der beste sein.
Niemand hätte die Spur verlassen müssen.....Überrundung ok, aber trotzdem ein fight. Genau solche Rennen fehlen heute, wo es Schmui nicht mehr gibt. Momente wie gegen Hill, Villeneuve und Häkkinnen werden wir nie wieder zu Gesicht bekommen. Einen Sieger zu sehen ist schön, ein Geiles Rennen wie damals, worüber man noch Wochen sprach eine Ausnahme und einfach nur GEIL!!!!

Ob beabsichtigt oder nicht. Viele Entwicklungen aus dem Motorsport sind nunmal in der Serie gelandet. Primär ist der Motorsport eine Werbeplattform, wie es jede populäre Sportart auch ist. Und die Formel 1 hat genauso ihre Reize wie Fussball, Tennis oder auch Golf. Jeder muss seine Entdecken und sollte die anderen nicht schlecht machen weil ihn diese nicht interessieren.
DC (being laped) to hold schumi for 45 sec, and then slowing down on the racing line ( and not moving off the racing line) . That is just wrong on part of DC.

DC wusste ganz genau wer hinter ihm war und er hatte bereits eine runde rückstand, das heisst für ihn war das rennen gelaufen. den führenden 3 runden zu blocken um dem teamkollegen zu helfen ist absolut nicht legitim. dafür gibts eigentlich die schwarze flagge und am liebsten noch auf die fresse wie msc in der box andeutet.

Schumacher propably lost the championship because of Davids move. No doubt that Mclaren told him to do that. With these 10 points in the pocket he would have gone to the last race in Suzuka with a 6 points lead. And then he had had a calm last race with no need to attack in the heavy way he did. Coulthard deciced the championship 1998. A shame.

I would say that when there is noone around David should have given him the position at the moment Schumacher comes up behind. After a few corners i think a black flag is appropriate.

@panhus11 also david hat sich doch selbst lächerlich gemacht indem er eine runde zurücklag und ms dann 3 runden geblockt hat um seinem teamkollegen das rennen offenzuhalten, das ist auch kein geheimnis denn das hat er in einem interview später auch zugegeben. egel ob du schumacher magst oder nicht, das war eine absolute scheissaktion, zumal das rennen für david gelaufen war.ich fahr selber rennen und heutzutage- eigentlich auch damals ist sowas ein absoluter nogo...da war also nichts richtig!

@syltnet coulthard hat blaue flaggen gesehen und ist vom gas gegangen. schumacher hat das nicht gecheckt und ist hinten drauf gefahren. alle hätten anders reagieren können. im endeffekt ein normaler rennunfall.

@LeondP naja, nicht unbedingt. Coulthard hat Schumacher 3 Runden lang geblockt, obwohl er eine Runde zurücklag. Das hat er aus dem Grund gemacht, weil Häkkinen relativ weit abgeschlagen war. Er wollte ihm damit das Rennen offen halten, weil Schumi deutlich schneller war. Von daher kann man sagen, dass es nicht offensichtlich war, dass Coulthard da auf die Bremsen steigt, vorallem nicht auf der Ideallinie.

for me this was the first grandprix I watched and since then watched all races.. this gp was one of the "craziest" I have seen.. and this was clearly coulthard´s fault in my eyes! schumi couldnt see anything and coulthard slowed down so much on the racing line. I can understand schumi and his frustration!

Im TV sieht es aus wie ein lockerer Auffahrunfall...und alle fragen sich, was Schmui sich so aufregt. Wenn jemand "mit absicht" das Leben eines anderen gefährdet würden so manche genauso reagieren. Niemand hätte die Spur verlassen müssen.....Überrundung ok, aber trotzdem ein fight. Genau solche Rennen fehlen heute, wo es Schmui nicht mehr gibt. Momente wie gegen Hill, Villeneuve und Häkkinnen werden wir nie wieder zu Gesicht bekommen. Einen Sieger zu sehen ist schön, ein Geiles Rennen wie damals, worüber man noch Wochen sprach eine Ausnahme und einfach nur GEIL!!!!

Naja ich lass das Argument mal gelten... das Ding ist doch aber, dass der Motorsport nicht betrieben wird um Entwicklungen in Serie gehen zu lassen... das könnte man auch mit weniger Aufwand. Ändert nichts daran, dass die Formel1 wenig Unterhaltungsfaktor zu bieten hat. Das ist ein reines Nebenprodukt des Rennsports.

Ob beabsichtigt oder nicht. Viele Entwicklungen aus dem Motorsport sind nunmal in der Serie gelandet. Primär ist der Motorsport eine Werbeplattform, wie es jede populäre Sportart auch ist. Und die Formel 1 hat genauso ihre Reize wie Fussball, Tennis oder auch Golf. Jeder muss seine Entdecken und sollte die anderen nicht schlecht machen weil ihn diese nicht interessieren.

DC wusste ganz genau wer hinter ihm war und er hatte bereits eine runde rückstand, das heisst für ihn war das rennen gelaufen. den führenden 3 runden zu blocken um dem teamkollegen zu helfen ist absolut nicht legitim. dafür gibts eigentlich die schwarze flagge und am liebsten noch auf die fresse wie msc in der box andeutet.

Schumacher propably lost the championship because of Davids move. No doubt that Mclaren told him to do that. With these 10 points in the pocket he would have gone to the last race in Suzuka with a 6 points lead. And then he had had a calm last race with no need to attack in the heavy way he did. Coulthard deciced the championship 1998. A shame.
