I know the Three Gorge Dam might displace people and destroy archeological sites, but keep in mind the floods of the Yangtze sometime kill people and displace them anyway, it's a small price to pay I think. Beside, China got the biggest population in the world, they could use the extra CLEAN energy instead of burning up coal and polluting the planet.
Okay, so the dam produces a lot of good, clean power. But the farms it displaces produce a lot of good, clean food. People can live without power (and they have since before at least the 1700's); without food, well, that's a bit harder.
Plus, you say this thing prevents floods. What about the people upstream? Does it help them? AT ALL?
@Nikifuj908 The agricultural loss isn't that big, there's still the Chinese central plains to provide food. As well as the people upstream, yes, it helps them, since it allows ships to travel up to their towns and do commerce
@Sphynra Assuming, of course, the ships don't accidentally crash into a floating house. Plus, what's wrong with a helicopter? You don't need a dam for that.
As for the plains, you're right; there is a lot of space out there. The only problem would be irrigation.
@Nikifuj908 The cargo carried by helicopters is minuscule compared to that carried by ships, not to mention helicopters are more expensive and require more maintenance. That, and they can't cross oceans.
Also, the cartoonish risk of a container ship crashing into a floating house generally doesn't deter canals and dams from being built and producing billions worth of gains.
That, and the central plains are already irrigated and used for agriculture, herp turp.
@Nikifuj908 They're building docks and ports on the cities that are gonna find themselves next to the riverbank once it floods. Besides, trade around the Yangtze has existed from before the dam.
Well, a game video can certainly cause a lot of conflict of interest when it has political relevance. The point of having it in the game I suppose is that it makes the game marketable in China, and as someone pointed out, slavery is an option too, so you're the one to decide if your civilisation will be practical or moral.
As for opeeum69's comment. It showed a lot of racial prejudice and arrogance, and not a lot of understanding of the fact even Chinese people are laughing at their government.
Yes it is (in both real life and in the game). But it is justified since it provides a lot of energy. In the game if your entire country is on the same continent you will get a huge production bonus and won't need to build power plants anymore.
@MrJesusFreak22 the only way to use caste system is after the tech called Code of Laws. Once you convert into cast system, go too your city screen (by double clicking it), then add the scientist, artist, engeneirr you want but be were that if you put too much great people, you will starve. However some great people like enginer must have certin buildings to create.
Well, it's boring if you just keep going down to the more modern ones, like universal suffrage, free religion, free speech, etc. so yes, i do kind of do it for the culture. But it does make the game more interesting at times, you should try it. And I also choose hereditary rule for my political beliefs, my username speaks for itself.
I don't like Universal Suffrage (The village idiot shares the same opinion as a man as intelligent as Einstein or Aristotle), so I usually choose Police State, even without having a war going on.
Buildings get finished 25% faster under Organized religion (provided city has state religion) and with Hereditary Rule every military unit adds a happy citizen; meaning you can grow the cities quite large. Note that he also uses Environmentalism, which adds +6 health, so yeah, large cities that are healthy and happy.
How do you make the wonder into a youtube video? i tried recording it with a webcam but it comes out so fuzzy and it doesnt adjust to light changes, but yours looks like i was actually playing the game right now.
I don't personally remember what alot of mine are, sometimes I use Emancipation, sometimes Mercantalism...rarely that, but I like to use the types that make myself self-reliant and leave the other Civs to starve I guess. xD
good point chank ppl dont seem to think if the good out weighs the bad sometimes just a fact for ya before the tva every spring and summer the southeast used to lose 1/3 of its ppl to malaria...now?
what's the point? every year, the flood of Yanze river displaces tens of thousands of people downstream, and kills many too... yeah, for thousands of years, those downstream people used to this displacement and risk of death, but is this also something worth to change?
I miss the Hoover Dam wonder...it may be smaller than Three Gorges, but it is a lot better looking, and it had less of an adverse impact on the local residents and ecology.
Yes, the Three Gorges Dam is going to displace thousands of people. However, it's not just for the economic benefits. Every decade, the Yangtze floods dramatically and millions are affected. The last time it flooded, 300 million people were displaced - approximately the population of the entire United States.
actually the three gorges dam has all long been a idea for Chinese leaders since Sun Yat-sen. Mao wanted to build it in order for China to harness the energy from the Yangtze and to control the tides of it.. but the project is a conspiracy itself because it displaced thousands of inhabitants around the area and of course certain species of animals are endangered.. but still it is huge and a wonder
Kertschy, as a Chinese myself I disagree with you. We need to dam to Three Gorges Dam. It is designed to make China a fully developed nation.
If want more info on this you can take a look at my debate with the user 'zingtea'. Search for the video 'Tribute to the Goddess of the Yangtze'. Thanks for your responses.
Think, chankljp -- other countries like the US have already gone through the phase you are going through. Up to the 1960's or so, we often carelessly allowed our pride in our engineering to overwhelm our ecological common sense, and the results are still being repaired today. Never, never, never let your nationalistic pride and urge for development lead you to make the same stupid mistakes we made, or the damage to all of us will be incalculable.

That is not maded for nationalistic pride. it is made because chineses leaders want prove communism is not doomed and they do that with any cost. Like tsar bomb was in URRS.
Or because hydro power is one of the cheapest forms of energy, and i'd imagine china needs alot of it. People need to realize they didn't build a giant Monolith on a nature reserve for no reason, its serves a practical purpose. Americans speaking down on chinese for doing this need to look at the dams we build all over, and how without them we'd need coal and petrol even more since we are neurotically fearful of nuclear power.
I have never built this lol

wow everything that has to do with china will be put on a negative light
why do the chinese feel the need to explain themselves to the world
let the rest talk about china all they want, let them cry out against china all they want
and one day when they see the result of the chinese way, they will wonder how they became inferior once again
little would they know it is precisely that which they despise today that will have made the difference, let them be blind, and just silently laugh
