Lots and lots of tape was employed for that concert - I saw them in Mobile in 1981 and recall that all of "Prologue", and a lot of "Twilight" and "Your's Truly" were lifted from studio tapes. I don't blame them - how could you re-create "Prologue" live in 1981?
This is wonderful, I have never seen any vid of this tour yet alone the Dortmund concert, I was there, what a fantastic night it was. I was serving with the British Army at the time and had never been to a concert before in Germany, man the germans rocked that night. Thanks for the Video, quailty does not matter it's the memory. 5 stars for that. P.S Shame the robot intro is not on this clip what a grea start to a concert.
Jeff is a perfectionist, and since he can't control everything on stage, a stage concert will not be perfect. That is why he felt their live shows were never like the records. Well, duh! But think about how technology has advanced since 1986. If he had taken a reformed ELO out on the road after 1990 or 1995, the technology would have made the band even closer to the records. This video also shows how much ELO misses Kelly Groucutt. And Kelly, RIP.
Jeff must've been a little drunk. He screwed up 'Night is day and twilight's gone away'. He started saying 'Twilight' and fumble an improv. He also screwed up 'That now is day and once was night' and then started the following line with 'Twilight' and more jarbled lyrics. Also, they cut out the "You brought me here but can you take me back again/BRIDGE" that comes prior to the last chorus.
The Rod concerts were selling poorly so a big act was drafted in at the last minute (as special guests) so Bev organised it. Jeff wasn't too keen and spent most of the time pissed out of his head in 86. I was at the wembley stadium show and took a few photos too! Great times!
It was pretty well known by the summer of 1986 that ELO was on its last legs. Jeff was not interested in maintaining ELO as a headlining act. He was producing more artists all the time. If he was truly interested in keeping ELO as a headliner, he wouldn't have turned down headlining Knebworth in 1979.
I get the impression Jeff hated playing live. I recall in the Afterglow booklet, he mentions that the cellists were bouncing around the stage so much during the uptempo songs that Richard would have to cover for them. And I get the impression that, similiar to Abba, Jeff just prefered being in the studio, creating music, rather having to recreate it onstage. While ELO were a great live band, they sounded really different onstage and I think maybe Jeff thought it was too much of a compromise.
Well done for sneaking a camcorder into a concert in 1986 - it must have been huge compared to today's technology! (Though I suppose it could have been hidden inside someone's shoulder-pads or bouffant hairdo...)
Incredible...I have heard the audio of this, but never the video. Listen to Jeff botch up the verses that Kelly used to sing live (on the Time tour)! Does anyone know if this came before or after the excellent Heartbeat 86 concert?
ELO did not Lip Synch!! thats a lame lie thats been circulating for years! unless your talking about promo videos and tv music shows, cos ALL bands lip synch on those
People accused them of lip synching because when the Live At Wembley concert from the Out Of The Blue tour was aired on TV, they dubbed the studio versions of the songs over the live tracks. If I'm not mistaken the most recent DVD release has the real live audio.
@mbarsky@mikewall Heartbeat was 15th March 1986.I was studying out in Regensburg, and flew back from Munich just for the NEC concert - flight cost a bloody fortune, but was worth it for that legendary night.I actually thought that 60-min set was better than their concert performance on the Time tour, which I had seen at Wembley Arena on December 4th 1981.(God i wish i'd known that ELO were touring Germany in '86 = Queen and ELO etc in the same year was quite epic
If I was time traveler I would go to that concert and record in HD

I friggin LOVE this song. Lynne is a genius. God knows I wasn't a big fan back then, but I was the slow one.

ELO should have kept with the strings a great sound ! TIME was the worst album they made and started the decline in record sales

I'm not convinced that there is a lot of tape used. I'm seeing lots of multitasking in the video.

in 1986 in Dortmund, was not a really ELO concert.
they where only the supporting act for Rod Stewart. Yes, it´s a shame, but it´s true.

This concert was ELO's second last, on July
12, 1986, and Bev is definitely on drums.

This is a gem. I never knew much of ELO from this period. Is Bev on drums?
