@Mragdoll Oh, no. I can do the splits on the ground, but not standing. It takes TONS of practice to be able to split standing up without leaning to the side or back.
I don't understand english very well so I need to ask you, did she say she is "5,0 tall"? if yes, she is such an inspiration for me, 'cause I want to be a dancer and I'm only 5.2 tall
This video is what made her one of my favorite principal dancers. I come to this video almost weekly when I am having a hard time in class, and every time it never fails to encourage me. Thanks Anaheim Ballet!
"ballet isn't a modeling business, It's about dancing"
she is such an inspiration!
everytime I get jealouse in one of the dancers in my group because she has an amazing body or whatever I just say that sentence to myself and it is just make me want to work harder(:
@Moniranan thanks! it was my first ballet lesson and I was with people my age that had been doing it for years and years. my teacher said I had natural technique!! I guess your good luck worked :D
The problem with being Maria's size for prospective dancers is that if they're not good enough to be above Corps De Ballet, they can't get hired because they don't fit in the Corps. If the dancer is better than Corps, then anything is possible.
@BlindbyBeauty I am 14. I have bunions, tailor's bunions, collapsed arches on both feet, 6 hammertoes, and the way my leg goes into my foot is 18 degrees off. i started looking at ballet when i was 13 after i watched Black Swan. since then its been 8 months. i can now do the splits and a back bend. never give up!!!
Whenever I feel I can't do it, I'm not talented enough, young enough (i'm sort of a beginner and already seventeen), strong enough, or whatever my boyfriend is polite enough to remember me of this video, and then everything makes sense again (:
It really makes me feel amazing to hear this AMAZING dancer like maria kochetkova herself to say that there were moments where she wanted to quit, but didnt. she really is an inspiration
She really is right. Ballet isn't if you are the right height, or if you have a long neck. Ballet isn't if you have hyper extended legs or "banana" feet. Ballet is dance and a passion. Nothing more.
@sk8rpunkbalerina dont worry.... misty copeland (anaheim did a special on her too) has some boobage and shes one of the most beautiful dancers ive ever seen :D
maria is right, ballets not a modeling business :]
@sk8rpunkbalerina check out their video about misty copeland it's a few videos before this one. she has boobs, arched legs and she still looks phenomenal
You guys, take in the MESSAGE that she had to offer us! Your body doesn't have to be perfect. If you work as hard as you can and you show your soul when you dance, that is what matters.
@stickerlover164902 Who cares if you don't have "the right" body shape!? It doesn't matter if you don't "look right" because what actually matters is if you're commited and enjoy it. There are quite a few girls on youtube that prove you don't have to be stickthin to be a great ballerina. I say you go for it, if you really really want it then i'm sure you'll be great! :D
I dance in ballet too and on the other hand I am focusing on school. But every week I look forward to dancing. It's a lot of fun and I hope succed to my goal. Is there any tips on becoming a better dancer?
@casabacca I wish it was like that in europe, it really isn't... I know great ballet dancers who are forced to join modern companies just because they aren't tall enough...
@SnotRockets55 As a solist you can stand out, so it doesn't really matter what you look like, but if you want to start out in the the Corps the Ballet you really need to have a curtain length (in some companies they don't accept black people in the Corps for example). And there is also a MAJOR difference bitween English/Russian/Italian or American ballet companies. I think Maria's words have been mistakenly interpreted. What Maria is essentially saying is this: I don't have stereotypically "perfect" ballet body as defined by today's aesthetics, but I offer qualities more precious than physicality alone. Those qualities are love/ feeling for the art of ballet and the need to express emotions through dance.
She's being realistic about body type, but at the same time proudly dismissing the claim that ballet is all about one very specific body type.
This is my favorite video, ever. It is the most inspiring! I have so much respect for Maria and hearing her say everything she said in this video just encourages me more and more to keep going and to beat the odds, because I KNOW I can make it!! Thank you SO MUCH Maria for this insight and inspiration. I will think of you often as I face difficulties, you are right, they will always be there -- but they make us stronger! <3
obviously things she thinks "aren't perfect" have nothing to do with her flexibility! she is, in my opinion, a perfect dancer. i guess we are all our own worst critics.
This girl is an inspiration not just to dancers but to anyone who wants to achieve something difficult!!! And she is an amazing dancer as well. Everything you said in this video was well said.Bravo Maria.
On Nov 28, 2008, she danced Giselle at Kennedy Center. My mom and sister and I were blown away by how she stole our hearts both in acting and dance. They finally understood why I love that ballet so much and why I had insisted that 4 of us attend the performance.

Yes, there are the Yuan Yuan Tans of the world who bring people to tears with her lomb limbs and ethereal lines, but Maria is a different type of dancer. Also, there are a lot of short guys out there in baller (especially in SFB), so maria is a perfect partner for all of them!
Too bad she said, "There are a lot of things wrong with my body!" If you have a successful career in anything, a roof over your head, healthy food to eat, clean water and access to medical care then you are doing better than most people on the planet. Body image issues are all relative!
