(More from the American)The Labour party did cancel the TSR2 but the Tories produced the 1957 White Paper and your current Tory PM has proposed big reductions in defense spending. The Labor party was in power in 1945-1951 when the UK developed the bomb. They also must have overseen development or at least the initiation of development of all those UK aircraft first flown thru the mid 1957.
I'm an American. The UK should have kept this plane. Our Eisenhower, JFK & LBJ administrations encouraged its cancellation. We had a very big share of free world aerospace business as we do today. Trouble with us is we tend to worry about the defense, farming, financial, pharma & software sectors but precious little else. Farmers are politically powerful and these other sectors make lots of new millionaires.
If I remember correctly the yanks paid the British Government to scrap this fabulous piece of British engineering, so in fact it was nothing to do with politics and everything to do with the Americans relentless march to supposed world domination.and by the by your lot and the liberals aren't doing much to further the British Military at the moment are they, and please don't demean yourself by coming back with the usual garbage of it's all Labour's fault.
@Kresnov What a load if tripe from a typical Guardian reader. The LABOUR government of the time didn't have to accept the bribe? Look back in history of this country and after EVERY SINGLE labour administration comes bankruptcy. YES it is Labour's fault - since THEY WERE ONES IN POWER?!
@george385 You only see what you want to see,I refer you to the last part of my comment but you went right ahead and blew any credibility you had by trying to tar me with the Guardian reader brush(not). 12000 service men and woman about to have their livelihoods taken away from them by yours and the bleeding heart liberals slash and burn politics, nice one keep voting that way I'm sure your next tax break is not too far away.Enjoy
@Kresnov Credibility - lets get a few things straight....1. I own you nothing, and 2. You approached me? The fact is that after every single Labour government this country is left bankrupt with nothing to show for it. You not seen the newspapers the last few days? And - just for the record I did not vote Labour, Liberals nor Tories.....you work it out?
This had little to do with reduction of military capability. It was a short-sighted move by the government, who went for an American solution that was a complete disaster. Saved a few quid, destroyed our manufacturing capability, and eventually cost us far more. Well done! Typical politicians really.
Imagine what this country would be like if POLITICIANS wouldnt of screwed us over. Labour with this and the economy and conservitives with the carrier fleet in the 70s and the entire manufacturing industry
Reduction of British military capability is synonymous with every BRITISH government. It doesn't matter whether they are Labour or Conservative. They're just as bad as each other and take it in turns, as the 2010 SDSR shows.
Amazing aircraft. Stood under it and photographed it at Hendon (see my set of pics at flickr.com - under the name chappells10 and the set British Air Museums). It is awe inspiring up close. Why have governments of all persuasions systematically dismantled our engineering prowess & spearheading? Or simply handed it to the USA? Harriers. Sound barrier tail elevators. 'Concorde is too noisy' et al. Ad nauseam. Heartbreaking.
@george385 Agree entirely. It is an undisputable fact, that everytime we suffer a filthy socialist Labour administration in power, the nation ends up bankrupt, with very little to show for it. Wilson's shower led the country onto the rocks in the 1960's, they did it again in the 1970's, and war criminal Blair, and dysfunctional Brown repeated the folly over the last thirteen years. Hand in hand with economic disaster comes the reduction of British military capability with EVERY Labour government
@george385 I've often wondered why they called themselves the labor party while they actually caused more unemployment and damage to the once great British industry. Getting rid of the jobs while at the same time promising to help the workers isn't very smart, after all.
Thwey will do the same the next time you elect them!
