I think that's called a water sprout. I thought tornadoes are suppose to suck in anything that comes in contact with it then throws it from sky high.

Waterspouts are similar to tornadoes, but they form in a different manner. Generally, waterspouts are given the honor of being called a "tornado over water". But waterspouts are not truly given the name of a real tornado until they reach land.

@yeeting water spouts form because of warm water and cold air rushing over the top, tornadoes form from cold air and warm humid air with a few other things. Tornadoes are always bigger this is a tornado, when a water spout hits land its called a land spout they die off almost strait away.

@RENTMEBITCH correction: waterspouts form off any cumulus-based clouds (from localized storms) & are not part of any complicated mesoscale storm features. it is physically & mathematically impossible to have supercell-like tornadoes in Malaysia with the absence of vital components such as frontal dynamics, the apparent Coriolis force, & common typhoon landfall scenarios. spouts only pack a very mediocre punch in windspeed & is generally rated as a weak F0 in the Fujita scale.

@yeeting wrong, in meteorological terms they are extremely distinctive. waterspouts do not have the honor of even approaching a tornado given its parent storm's physical characteristics. however, a "tornadic waterspout" is a supercell-tornado moving from land to a body of water and those are the damaging ones. and wrong again: waterspouts that do reach land are called landspouts, not tornadoes...Ever...

@burningsunz correction: waterspouts (on water) & landspouts (on land) are non-supercell rotating columns of air and are capable of forming off the base of any cumulus cloud (localized storms) anywhere across the world. a tornado essentially forms off a supercell structured storm and is moving on land. a tornadic waterspout is a supercell tornado moving into a body of water, & unlike the weak-winds based waterspout, these tornadic ones are damaging given its initial formation stage.
