they should try it with a smaller ratio. like 2 to 1. because i know most people wouldn't say "well there's 8 parts oil. i need one part water to try and put this out". most would take a big bucket of water and pour it on. but yes, i know that the myth calls for 8 to 1.

The scenario that a tin can filled with water based liquid falls into a chip pan full of blazing oil and causes huge mayhem is not even unplausible!

Every cook is taught as first lesson not to extinguish fat with water, so only a fool would do that. However imagine now a soup can on a plastic shelf or shelf with plastic hooks hanging above a chip pan or oven with a pot of heated fat that catches fire. The flames melt the shelf, the can drops down and KABOOM! This accident is very realistic.

I was working in a kitchen once where a bucket of water was accidentally tipped by a cleaner into a full deep fryer, that had been off all night.

The cleaner in question just 'figured' that he could switch it on, and boil away the water. In practice, the water sat below the oil, heated to boiling point and instantly evaporated, throwing the ENTIRE contents of the 300 litre fryer over the kitchen.

If you don't know what hot grease does with water you have no business in a kitchen!

Everyone is human Aerial. Even the most prestige 5 Star chefs make mistakes. It's plausible on the case of the busy kitchen + a tenderfoot. Guy doesn't know anything, gets overwhelmed, sets things all over the place. a tin can with water near the stove top. Basically I like to apply "Murphy's Law" in this case scenario. "If you make it 'Idiot Proof' the World will make a better idiot."
