  • Hank Ballard came out with "Work with me Annie". The song was considered too dirty to be on public radio at the time so they recorded this one which is the cleaned up version. Same thing happened with "The Twist" The record companys knew of Hank Ballards reputation and wanted someone else to sing the song on television. Chubby Checker got the credit. Hank Ballard wrote it. Ballard should have gotten more credit than he did!

  • i mean it was a movie about Etta James beyonce play as her on Cadillac Records beyonce have the same skin as Etta James

  • it was a movie about beyonce play as you on Cadillac Records

  • rip Etta James

  • You want a TAB you gotta order something first!!!!!!!!

  • Still waitin" for flyin cars!!!!!

  • Still waitin" for flyin cars!!!!!

  • "Hey McFly! I thought I told you never to come in here!"

  • "Yes, I'm George! George McFly! And I'm your density--I mean, your destiny."

  • Such a GREAT song. I wish more people were familiar with it.

    Rest peacefully Etta James.

  • R.I.P Ms. Etta James.

  • Gimme a MILK.. CHOCOLATE .

  • how could anyone dislike this video?

  • The Wallflower" (also known as "Roll With Me Henry" and "Dance With Me Henry") was an answer songs to Hank Ballard's male chauvinist "Work With Me Annie" ..and was written by Johnny Otis, Hank Ballard, and Etta James. Etta James recorded it, with uncredited vocal responses from Richard Berry, under the title CESNORED AND RETITLED TITLE of "The Wallflower" and it became a rhythm and blues hit, topping the U.S. R&B chart for 4 weeks in the 1950s. It started her off on her professionan singing life

  • Hank Ballard's song had lyrics like "Work with me, Annie' and "take my meat" and it was all about a man getting his rocks off while his woman was just supposed to "work" her ass off to give HIM pleasure with no concern for her own pleasure, so Etta did this ANSWER SONG with lyrics like: ''(Hey Baby, What do I have to do,)

(To make you love me too,)''...and ''While the cats are ballin,

You better stop your stallin,'' and she wasn't talking about DANCING.....

  • youtube.com/watch?v=6H09-oNRGoM The same version but without the thick slapback on it. (I guess that was added in a later remix/remaster?)

  • Actually, this was a response to Hank Ballard's "Work With Me Annie." She was a brilliant vocalist. R.I.P. lady Etta.

  • she wrote this song at 14

  • this song reminds me of Sister Act (the first one) when Whoopi went to the bar across the street from the church when the guy had put in change in the jutebox and Whoopi (sister mary agnes, i think that was her name in the church) pushed the button that played this song, and Whoopi gave a smile right when the beat came in.....lol. i didn't know at the time of the movie that that person who was singing was Etta James.

  • this song remember me one scene of the movie Back To The Future, there I met Etta's voice

  • R.I.P.Johnny Otis, the producer of this record...who passed a few days before Ms. James, on Jan. 17th. They will both live on forever....

  • Rest In Peace Etta

  • Roll was the first version...Dance was exchanged because "roll " was not a good word back then

  • love her first version, dance with me Henry. But it is such a great song. Enjoying it tonight.

  • what a presence, loved her pounce.

cant say enough, miss her already

  • Thanks for posting. The quality is good. A coworker put this track along with At Last on a disk for me years ago. It's truly a treasure!

  • Rest In Peace Etta. Thanks for the music.

  • RIP Johnny Otis

  • R I P Etta. What a gem she was!!!

  • R.I.P :(

  • Her first hit !

  • I did not know this song was Etta James! Wow.

  • This song was an answer song to "Work with me Annie" by Hank Ballard and the Midnighters.

  • RIP Etta James. You will be severely missed by all who was touched by your music.

  • Etta James was 17 when she recorded this song. It was a musical response to "Work With Me Annie", not a re-worked cover. What a voice!

  • @runesnthistles 15 not 17

  • to think that she was 15 years old when she recorded this, a real talent. Fellow Rock N Roll Hall of Famer Johnny Otis produced this, nd both died just days apart

  • RIP First lady of Rock 'n' Roll. You are a legend.

  • Thanks for this great tribute to a great lady... An Icon who suffered the reflection of her time here. They come to show us what we are and who we are. At Last you can reast sweet lady.

  • Love ya, Etta. RIP

  • Love her songs, RIP Ms. Etta Jamesette ( which is her real last name)

  • @Faithful188 Jamesette Hawkins

  • @Faithful188 actually it was her first name. Her birth name was Jamesetta Hawkins

  • Me mama LOVED this song, (circa early 60's)....I think she WORE out the record!

  • In memory of a great legend. In honor of Etta's passing...first with this song that apparently got her started. I agree this version is superior to the hyped-up style of 1958, being more melodious and saucy at the same time.

  • R.I.P

  • Sister Act anyone?!

  • RIP Ms. James

  • This version was actually censored in 1958 because it was to suggestive so she did dance with me Henry so it could be playe on the radio followed by annie had a baby can't dance no more

  • HELLO: I'M CARLOS ANTONIO VITAL CASTELLANOS I CAANOT DIGEST TO MUCH RAW MEET MY GREATGRANDPA HIS NAME WAS CARLOS VITAL O BUT HE COULD DIGEST MUCH. WHEN WILL I SEE THE NEXT OPPORTUNITY, PLEASE TO CALL OR WRITE?

  • awesome song thanks for posting...

  • One of the best 50s songs

  • This old song got some flavor, and I was born in '77 more than twenty years this song was recorded.

  • "He's an absolute dream!" - Lorraine Baines

  • Just watched back to the future for the umteenth time and always loved this song. Great upload and find! The credits in the film show it as dance with me henry.

  • Just watched back to the future for the umteenth time and always loved this song. Great upload and find!

  • some people would say at last was their favorite etta james song but for me its this one

  • Rhythm & Blues WILL LIVE forever!! ...thanks to the likes of Etta James, Joe Turner, all the groups, etc.,

  • Good old 1955

  • Give me a milk. Chocolate!

  • how 50's could be :D

  • "HEY 2 DISLIKERS. I thought I told you not to come in here!"

  • amazing song!

  • Johnny Otis Band!

  • I use to listen to this song with my grandfather in the car to middle school

  • this is the first etta james song i liked. in my excuse it was 1986 and i was 15. i had never heard at last. but i loved this song, it was on the back to the future soundtrack, which i had on cassette.

  • I just checked all 72 comments, and NOBODY has pointed out the male vocalist is JOHNNY OTIS ! He arranged and produced this record, which was the #1 R&B record for all of '55. This great song, and a lot more, including "Come on Baby, Let the Good Times Roll," by Shirley and Lee, is available in the 50th Ann. CD of "Oldies but Goodies, Vol. 1. Buy it.

  • @theoriginalbadbob Male vocalist is Richard Berry, creator of "Louie Louie".

  • @luvureally Alright, if this is not the original recording from 1955, it could be someone else, but Johnny Otis sang with Etta, whom he "discovered," on the this, her first recording. Regarding "Louie Louie," a radio station in Sacramento, CA was going to have a special show featuring all of the recorded versions of that song. This was about 10 years ago. They thought they would find, maybe, a dozen. They found over 600! It took almost 3 days to play all of them.

  • Yes when Sister Mary Clarence snuck out to the club and the large nun selected this song from the jukebox.

  • How do any three people dislike Etta James?

  • those three people are nuckin futs.

  • This was the original that the stations quit playing because of (at the time) sexual connotations. It was then replaced with the piece of crap "dance with me Henry" by Georgia Gibbs. A great loss back in about 1955 the year I graduated from high school. That predates 'rock'n roll', was rhythm and blues then. I LIVED to listen to it (and I'm Anglo).

  • goddam this song gets stuck in my head.

  • This is an example of what they called "race music" back in the 50's, which is what, of course, all the teens preferred. For the "white bread" adults, they made "cleaned up" versions - like "Dance with me Henry" by Georgia Gibbs.

  • I watched Sister Act the other day, i had to ask my mom who sang this song, it just got stuck in my head when she picks this song at the bar. ^_^

  • The original is "Work With Me Annie" by the Midnighters aka The Royals featuring Hank Ballard (He wrote it along with "The Twist" and many others).

  • Give me a milk...chocolate!

  • *Hank Balard

  • This song is just a knock off made by the record companies and the FCC to "clean up" the dirty lyrics from the original version: Hank Blaard & the Midnighters' "Work With Me Annie" - check it out

  • @70marco80 - Checked it out, completely dug it! Never heard that version or even the whisper that another version was out there, so thank you!

  • @wings744 Glad I could help :)

  • Back to the future. The scene in the soda shop when mcfly was about to talk to Lorraine. I love this movie!!

  • So Henry was Hank Ballard?..WOW! Etta's version of Wallflower was the original of that song..not "Dance" with me Henry. The male accompaniement was a Richard Perry(?) as I recall...correct me on that.. Thanks for an R&B classic!

  • @southie231 Richard berry..(who is responsible for have love will travel & Louie Louie)

  • Let us all remember Etta in our prayers. She desparetly needs God's healing touch.

  • I always think of Sister Act, were they are in the biker bar. haha

  • Also the Shirley and lee version was released in 1955

  • work with me Annie was by Hank Ballard the most popular version was by Shirley and Lee but it's hard to beat Etta James Oh I just saw below that someone already supplied the info but It was played on black stations it was too much for mainstream radio however

  • The original tune was "Work with Me Annie" by Hank Ballard and the Midnighters. It was too racy for the public, so the song was banned. It was played in clubs and at parties and was considered really cool. Times have changed.

  • This song's original title is "Dance with Me Henry." "Roll" with me Henry gives it a sexual context. Rock and Roll originally meant having sex, so Henry better "roll" while the rolling is on." Or in the original "while the getting is good". Etta James is just plain great.

  • sister act !

  • Doesn't have the same energy as in the movie.

  • what part of back to the future is this from??

  • @HairConfetti It's from when Marty is being chased by biff after socking him in the diner. When the camera goes to his mom in the diner, this song is being played in the background.

  • @IAKIZabuza omg thank you!! lol ive watched bttf and bttf 2 like a gazigibigoogleillion times (a little exaggerated but you get the point) and i had NEVER noticed! it was probably because i was drooling over marty lol...

  • @IAKIZabuza When the black dude that worked there that later became mayor of hill valley, "i think his name was goldie wilson" was told to sweep the floor, i couldve sworn that it showed him later in the scene dancing with the broom to this song. LOL! Is that corret?

  • @IAKIZabuza I love George's line from that diner scene - "You are my density...I mean...my destiny." lol

  • @IAKIZabuza Yeah, it was also where George was about to ask Lorraine out to the dance by saying something romantic, like Marty suggested. But then Biff and his gang showed up and screwed everything, that's when Biff got socked

  • It actually plays throughout the scene before that too as George goes up to try to ask Lorraine out. This song always makes me say "Give me a milk, chocolate."

  • @HairConfetti

es en la pelicula 1, cuando entra el papa de marti al restaurant de los 80's , a pedirle a su esposa que la acompañara el baile de oceano.. o algo asi..

  • @HairConfetti The scene where Biff and his cronies was about to take money from George until his son Marty interviened.

  • @Tsuruta1 oh yeah thanks :)

  • @HairConfetti You're welcome, anytime. :)

  • they don't write/sing songs like this any more! LOVE Etta!

  • it's an ANSWER song to Annie Had A Baby which is hard to detect however

  • @incorvaiasalvatore

mi sembrava diversa nel film ma sono sicura che questa è la stessa canzone

  • @incorvaiasalvatore Your right the song is on the movie Sister act... ITs the scene when whoopi is in a biker Bar.... My mother used to have this song on one of her many volumes of "Oldies But Goodies"... I Love this song....Great Post...

  • @incorvaiasalvatore è questa! E' nella parte in cui lei è nel bar e la sceglie =)

    L'ho appena sentita xD

  • @incorvaiasalvatore yes ur right it was!

  • @incorvaiasalvatore Si è anche in Sister Act! La scena in cui Whoopi si reca al bar con la scusa della macchina! xD ...Sia ritorno al futuro che sister act sono due film che adoro quindi lo so per certo

  • Remember this so much as being considered too racy for radio - we kids loved it - the rebuttal to Hank Ballard and the Midnighters "Work with me Annie" - so glad I grew up when rhythm and blues was the music of the day.

  • i remember hearing this in sister act lol i love it!

  • I first heard this when I was in college. I am a year older than Etta.

  • yeah... it's got the same melody as work with me annie

  • @sumshiiit this is the answer song to "work with me annie"

  • She is the original queen of rock & roll.

  • ha ha roll round up side down ha ha ha that fatty

  • I wouldn't mind rolling with Etta back in the day!

  • Excellent song By Etta...LOVE her version the best!

I too first heard this one in "Back To The Furture"..

  • I remember my mom singing this song, but everyone is right, you never hear this song anymore, what a shame!!

  • "Lorraine, I just want to say that..." lol

    What a great song.

  • u dont hear this on the radio anymore. i was listening to the 50's channel and i heard this and im like IM IN LOVE WITH THIS SONG!!!

  • THIS, is the real rock and roll, that ignited the mid 1950s! You NEVER hear it today, on any oldies stations.
