I used to die there to be able to leech the mid-boss (and it's possible to do way better than in this vid). Normally it's just too hard to do, and you risk to die anyways. So it's better to die at the right moment and use the post-death shield to stand above the mid-boss for a few seconds, with C pressed AT FULL FORCE (or just C+).
So he can get up close to skyrocket his counter while he's temporarily invulnerable. At least, that was his intention, it seems-- but he had to bomb and lost that bonus that he was meant to carry through the rest of the stage.
